Gunnin' for the Green Chile Western Review: Rambo is Big Goofy Fun Review: Untraceable is World Class Terrible ... Just What is Cloverfield Anyway? synopsis Set in the British steel town of Sheffield, a group of out-of-work steel workers are organized by fun loving, slightly irresponsible Gaz into a Chippendale-style dance troupe. The group is made up of Dave, Gaz's overweight best friend who has recently been struck with impotency; Gerald, an ex-forman and amateur ballroom dancer; Horse, an old guy with dance moves that slightly resemble the funky chicken, the bus stop, and the bump; and Guy, who, despite his love of classic Hollywood musicals, is hopelessly cursed with no sense of rhythm. Despite these handicaps, they are soon dancing to the sounds of Donna Summer, Hot Chocolate, Gary Glitter, Sister Sledge, and Tom Jones.

Close This article appeared in the Guardian on Wednesday April 18 2007 on p2 of the section. It was last updated at 23:47 on April 17 2007. Throughout his life Terry Riley kept detailed diaries chronicling his long struggle with depression and mental illness. After he eventually took his own life in 2004, his wife Lynne handed the diaries to actor Steve Huison and asked if the words could be used to illustrate the terrible consequences of a lifetime battling with mental health problems. This week, Huison will be on stage in Southwark, south London, performing 50ft and Falling, a play chronicling Riley's life and death. In the audience will be mental health service users and professionals from Southwark, in an effort to spark a debate around issues of depression and suicide in the borough.

Music: Anne Dudley U.S. Distributor: Fox Searchlight The Full Monty is the third recent dramatic comedy to emerge from the United Kingdom to illustrate the effects of unemployment on the individual and the family. Like Brassed Off! and The Van , The Full Monty combines humor with light drama to explore the manner in which a group of men cope with the emotional and financial toll of being "force adjusted." Moreso than its two immediate predecessors, however, The Full Monty is interested in getting the audience to leave the theater with a warm feeling, and, considering this undemanding agenda, it's reasonably successful. No one would ever call The Full Monty ambitious. In fact, with its confident reliance upon formulaic situations and familiar characters, it's anything but that. Most of the credit for the film's success must go to the game troupe of actors and director Peter Cattaneo, who allows the story to develop in an unforced, easygoing manner. Originality may be at a premium here, but

Director: Peter Cattaneo Writer: Simon Beaufoy Director of Photography: John de Borman Editors: David Freeman and Nicholas Moore Music: Anne Dudley Production Designer: Max Gottlieb Producer: Uberto Pasolini Fox Searchlight; R; 90 minutes Release: Cast: Robert Carlyle, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Addy, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, Hugo Speer The Cinderella story of 1997, The Full Monty was the most profitable film of the year and one of the highest moneymakers of all time, having cost only $3.5 million to make and grossing more than $200 million worldwide. Stripped of their pride and jobs when the local steel mill closes, the lads of Sheffield, England, are desperate for a way to pay the bills and rebuild their self respect. Inspired by a sold-out performance of Chippendale dancers, Gaz (Carlyle) convinces his buddies they will turn their lives around and find redemption by taking it all off in front of a paying crowd. Never mind that these rough-hewn strippers have neither the confidence, the bodies, or the sense of rhythm for their new vocation. In one scene the boys critique a female pin-up, and then are aghast when they realize women might examine their bodies in an equally uncompromising fashion. Indeed, director Cattaneo mocks his characters, but he also treats them with pathos and affection.

The post-apocalyptic tale has been used by a number of writers in fiction, most notably by John Christopher , but on British television the genre most famously formed the basis of Terry Nation's Survivors BBC 1974-1977 ). It also applied to the 1970's series The Changes ), and Barry Hines' horrific one-off nuclear holocaust drama Threads BBC 1984 ), but until The Last Train the subject had not been dealt with for some time by television.
With the working title of Cruel Earth (and actually transmitted in Canada under this name), The Last Train debuted on ITV in April 1999 in a prime-time slot, and was promoted at the time by Granada as one of (if not the) most expensive drama productions they had ever invested in. More daring than the majority of television drama output, it was a welcome change from the usual diet of police and hospital series.

As the train goes through a tunnel, a massive meteorits hits the Earth almost destroying it. When the passengers eventually emerge from the tunnel they are faced with the perils of contaminated water, acid rain, no food and feral dogs. As drama, The Last Train treads the same territory as Survivors and quickly falls into the same mistakes: life is very boring in post-holocaust England, and once you get past the standard tropes, there seems little left on which to hang successive episodes." Emily Prothero: I think that The Last Train should be put in the film and TV list, if only for the sake of completeness and to point out that there is no decent sc-fi TV being made in the UK today. If you've never seen it it's a collection of inept 2D characters who seem to deal with their condition in the most dim way possible, using generic cliches and tired narrative concepts, and the ending gets silly and twee. It's almost painful to watch, but only in a cringeworthy sense, rather than the depression which can be induced by Threads (watched some of it in a lecture - its grim). I found a review of it (I'm doing an essay on it - and saying its rubbish) at:

The Royal Today
Monday 21 January 2008 4:00pm - 4:30pm on ITV1. As Norman (Steve Huison) and Heather (Caroline Carver) approach the entrance of the hospital, Norman makes it clear to his sister he doesn’t think Adam (Ben Hull) is the right man for her. Heather suggests Norman is jealous and storms off leaving him disgruntled. He’s quick to put on a more jovial front when a 60 year old grandmother, Eunice Hall (Mary Cunningham), wobbles towards the hospital, helped by her daughter Grace (Tara Moran). Norman rushes to her aid, and turns on the charm. Once inside the hospital, Dr Sarah Chatwin (Kirsty Mitchell) tends to Eunice, and Grace looks guilty as she confesses her mother had a fall earlier in the week. Eunice is concerned she is a burden to Grace, but Sarah insists they run some tests. Dr Ormerod (Andrew Scarborough) later assesses Eunice and decides a CT scan and blood tests are needed. Grace stands by in horror.
