Harry Houdini (1874-1926)
(b. Erik Weisz, then Ehrich Weiss) On March 18, 1910 whilst on a visit to Australia and in a Voisin biplane (purchased for US$5,000 in Hamburg, Germany prior to the trip - see Hamburg images below), Harry Houdini made the first controlled , powered flight of an airplane in Australia , at Digger's Rest in Victoria, Australia. The magic of flight, he later wrote, was in the "glorious thrill" of first adventure, and "not in minor modification which is perpetual in any art."
Harry Houdini, The Argus You may wish to download a 500 pixel or 1000 pixel version of the full image at right showing Houdini in the cockpit of the Voisin. Houdini, as well as being the first to make a controlled powered flight in Australia, also seems to be the first aviator here to have documented the event(s) on film. Houdini flies his Voisin Biplane in Sydney*, Australia, 1910 *Most probably at Rosehill Racecourse Download Movie 1 Source : "Bob King's : Houdini Tribute"

An alternate edit has been created by Carroll Gray which, although showing less of Houdini actually flying, does show an extended opening sequence of Houdini settling himself into the Voisin. Download Movie 2 Source : "Carroll Gray's : Pioneer Aviators Web Site"

Name at birth: Ehrich Weiss Harry Houdini was the most influential magician of the 20th century. His specialty was escapes: slipping out of ropes, chains and handcuffs while locked in trunks and milk cans or submerged underwater. (He once jumped into San Francisco Bay while handcuffed and shackled to a ball and chain.) In an era before TV, Houdini became world famous by barnstorming across America and around the globe. His skills and showmanship made the single name "Houdini" synonymous with entertaining magic; he is often credited with influencing later magicians from David Copperfield to David Blaine . He died in 1926, reportedly due to peritonitis after his appendix ruptured; the legend that he died during a failed escape is untrue. He was buried without an autopsy, and in 2007 a plan by family members to exhume his body moved forward, in an effort to solve the longstanding mystery of what caused his death. Extra credit : Houdini sometimes claimed his birthplace was Appleton, Wisconsin... Houdini chose his stage name as a tribute to French illusionist Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin... Houdini was known for debunking spiritualists, and once offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who could produce a "psychical manifestation" which Houdini could not reproduce by natural means... Another legend has it that Houdini's death was caused by an overeager fan, who ruptured Houdini's appendix with a surprise punch to the stomach; the punch did occur, but it probably did not cause the appendicitis... Harry Houdini's Diving Suit
Harry Houdini obtained a patent on an improved diving suit in 1921. The object of Houdini's diving suit was to allow a diver to get out of the suit while underwater in case the air supply failed. It also allowed a diver to don his suit without assistance. It accomplished this by being formed in two halves, with a locking joint in the middle. The diver could reach this joint and release it, and then escape from the suit. April 20, 2006 in Historical Patents Permalink

American magician known for his escapes from chains, handcuffs, straitjackets, and padlocked containers. Houdini, Harry magic . He was able to free himself from handcuffs, ropes, locked trunks, and many types of bonds. Houdini attributed his magic to natural, physical effects and explained how many of his tricks were performed. His writings include Miracle Mongers and Their Methods (1920) and A Magician Among the Spirits (1924). Theater and Film, "The Great Houdini" gains wide publicity by executing an escape from London's Scotland Yard, becomes a main attraction at London's Alhambra Theatre, and begins a 4-year tour of the Continent. U.S. escape artist Ehrich Weiss, 26, has adopted the name Houdini from the French magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin; having studied Robert-Houdin's work, his book The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin in 1908 will show that the Frenchman's dexterity was much exaggerated, and he will far surpass Robert-Houdin's reputation with feats such as having himself shackled in irons, locked into a roped and weighted box, dropped overboard from a boat, and emerging with a smile before baffled audiences.

Try to name a contemporary of Houdini from an era that lacked televisions, video and DVDs. Perhaps today, only Charlie Chaplin can compare. Born in Hungary : Escaping: No Stopping : Seemingly nothing could hold Houdini. He escaped from chains, jail cells, ropes, handcuffs, straitjackets, submerged packing boxes and more. He was legendary for accepting challenges, and in the process, gained an enormous amount of publicity. After his mother passed away, he often exposed fraudulent mediums and psychics and their methods. Spiritualism, a movement that encouraged communication with the dead, was popular during the era. End of a Career: Reaching Houdini: In death, spiritualists and mediums tried to reach Houdini who had established a secret code with his wife Bess Houdini. (After all, if anyone could communicate after death, it would be Houdini.) Seances were held for years after his death and are still being held today.
