Executive summary: Jazz singer, famous for Stormy Weather Lena Horne is a singer, dancer, actress, and activist who had a wildly successful career as a nightclub performer and recording artist. She was also a noted stage actress, but her success in Hollywood was cut short because of her outspoken activism and African-American heritage. Horne's father earned a comfortable living, although exactly how he earned it was never clearly explained. Her parents separated when she was a toddler. She was raised by her grandparents, but occasionally toured with her mother, a struggling stage actress. Horne started working as a chorus girl at the age of 14. Within two years she was singing at Harlem's legendary Cotton Club, where Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington served as almost surrogate fathers, shielding her from the seedy side of the business. At 18, she married a preacher's son, and at 25 they were divorced.

Lena Calhoun Horne By: Trenise Ladson Lena Horne (1917-present) was born on June 17, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. Her father, Teddy Horne, was born into a prominent family in their black neighborhood. He had failed at many jobs and finally decided that he could make easy money gambling, so he started to do so illegally. When Lena was three years old, her father left Lena and her mother. Soon after, her mother, Edna Scottron Horne, left as well to find New York. Lena's grandparents then took care of her. Her grandparents were both eccentric and wealthy. Lena's grandmother influenced her to become involved in such organizations as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); a program designed to benefit African Americans in their troubles. In 1924 Lena went to live with her mother in New York. When she reached the ripe old age of fourteen, she dropped out of high school, and went to work at an "all whites" club. The "talent artist" of the place let her work there because she had talent and very light skin for an African American. After this, she went on a musical tour with Noble Blessie. Soon after this she advanced and maintained a major theatrical role. This was her big break. Also around this time she met her future husband and later had two children (one was named Teddy after her father). She then started into movies. After her acting career ended, she began to work in nightclubs, and managed to make a pretty hefty salary. She usually received about $10,000 a week, and at the most: $60,000 a week.

E ven in her eighties, the legendary Lena Horne has a quality of timelessness about her. Elegant and wise, she personifies both the glamour of Hollywood and the reality of a lifetime spent battling racial and social injustice. Pushed by an ambitious mother into the chorus line of the Cotton Club when she was sixteen, and maneuvered into a film career by the N.A.A.C.P., she was the first African American signed to a long-term studio contract. In her rise beyond Hollywood's racial stereotypes of maids, butlers, and African natives, she achieved true stardom on the silver screen, and became a catalyst for change even beyond the glittery fringes of studio life. Billie Holiday , Cab Calloway, and Duke Ellington . She also met Harold Arlen, who would write her biggest hit, "Stormy Weather." For the next five years she performed in New York nightclubs, on Broadway, and touring with the Charlie Barnet Orchestra. Singing with Barnet's primarily white swing band, Horne was one of the first black women to successfully work on both sides of the color line. Lena gives us some attitude.

During one of his rare lighter moments, after having demonstrated for his two sons a dance called the Lindy Hop (it looked like what was later called The Hustle), Dad was remembering stories from "back in the day". In one particular story about his military days during WWII, he told us about how entertainer Lena Horne was Da Bomb of the Day, and how he had a crush on her since he met her when she toured military bases. He told us he had danced with Ms. Horne at a servicemen's club at Ft. Lee, Virginia. My brother and I looked at each other, and then back at him. "Yeah, Dad, sure, you danced with Lena Horne, riiiiight."

Horne's active career spanned six decades, and in 1989 she was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
