They say there are no second acts in America, but maybe when you’re born in Wales you can bend the rules. Hell, maybe when you’re Anthony Hopkins, the rules don’t even exist. Having made a decades-long career as one of the most indelible actors on film (most of us can’t even see the word “Chianti” without thinking of him as Hannibal Lecter), Hopkins taking on a new role: independent auteur. Though he’s directed two films before, with Slipstream he’s not only directing his own screenplay, but he wrote the music and stars. It’s a no-brainer to say this is a personal film, but Hopkins draws from both his career—there’s a sly nod to the Dreamworks logo—and his personal life to create his film, about a screenwriter whose mind, on the verge of implosion, merges with his characters in a highly surreal, non-linear way. There are bound to be plenty of people left scratching their heads after this film, but Hopkins is staunchly against explanations; he’ll go just far enough to tell you it’s a look inside his brain. Sitting in on a roundtable interview with Hopkins is another kind of look inside the man’s brain—he jumps effortlessly from discussing JFK’s grave to Hitler’s bunker, and off-handedly explains his belief that time is God, and God is time. Bob Zemeckis and Sony Imageworks and the hundreds of folks who labored to make this movie have delivered a must-see event, especially in IMAX 3-D. But it's not nearly as good as it could have been, nor did it need to be so labor intensive. I would happily watch the blue-screen/live-action/300 version of this movie, which would have cost half as much. Or I would eagerly see the entirely animated version. Why not shoot live-action and animate the non-human creatures? This performance capture/imagemotion process remains clunky and stiff. Here's the deal: the best stuff in Beowulf is the most stylized, the most liberated from the motion-capture processAngelina Jolie's spike-heeled demon, the monster Grendel, the golden dragon and Beowulf himself. Beowulf is an idealized Adonis-version of Ray Winstone, and the most magnificently rendered human character ever put on-screen. But the other humans, from Robin Wright Penn to Anthony Hopkins, with their plastic eyes and murky teeth, are still strange and weird. They are stiff, robotic, less human than if they had been animated. The human eye is rigged to pick out anything wrong. The closer to reality you get, the easier it is to miss it. As for the whole Academy debate about animation vs. visual effects, Zemeckis remains hung up on being taken seriously as a live-action director who works with actors and props etc. Well, as long as this movie is 100% rendered, the Academy considers it animation, even if the process used to make the movie is the same one that created Gollum or King Kong. Those characters are considered VFX. But the VFX committee will never budge on this.

As an actor, he is still preparing to play Alfred Hitchcock in a biopic, sill be seen next month in the all digital Beowulf, and his second directorial feature, Slipstream, will be released several months following its Sundance bow. Talking on the phone from the Southern Californian town of Ojai, the vacationing Hopkins says that Slipstream, a fragmented tale of lost dreams and illusion, came about at the right time in his life. "I'm gonna be 70 at the end of the year and I wanted to do something which was provocative, and unusual. I've always wanted to do a film that was experimental and knocks everything, that knocks all the rules out of the window, so when I wrote it three years ago, I did it as an experiment in writing, without any preconceived ideas. I just wanted to do something that was unique to me and unedited." Slipstream is not an easy film to define. A non-linear narrative, its core plot has Hopkins playing Hopkins Felix Bonhoeffer, a Hollywood screenwriter whose latest project seems to have somehow roamed free from its fictional underpinnings. Bonhoeffer himself seems to be living multiple lives - on the one hand, enjoying a friendship with young, blond Tracy (Lisa Pepper), while at other times being with wife Gina (Hopkins' real life spouse Stella Arroyave). But Gina is also a niece accompanying her aunt Bette (Fionnula Flanagan) on a road trip and sometimes she is an actress in the film that Felix is writing. Ray (Christian Slater) and Geek (Jeffrey Tambor) are killers who dress like '40s mobsters and tool around in a '60s-era Corvette Stingray, but Ray and Geek are also characters in the movie played by actors named Matt Dobbs (Slater) and Jeffrey (Tambor).
