The USO shows that brought a little bit of the States to the battlefield, were very important morale boosters for the GI's. Bob Hope of course, was a favorite during World War II, and in succeeding wars and police actions. Jack Benny brought his infamous violin and "stingy" persona to the GI's.
Bill and the other Signal Corps photographers were fortunate to get close to these stars of the Movies and Radio and take these pictures.
There were other entertainers also, including; Larry Adler, the harmonica virtuoso, and Marlene Dietrich, famous actress, who I believe entertained for our side. (Just kidding of course).

About Bob About Dolores Exhibits Joke Page ... Home Christmas 1964 Some of the crew had heard that Cardinal Francis X. Spellman was going to conduct a midnight Mass in a big field at Tan Son Nhut air base. If the rest of our stay in Vietnam was going to be like this first day, I felt a little prayer wouldn't hurt. I grabbed my Saint Christopher's medal and my mezuzah and Jack Shea, our director, and we went with them. The Army insisted on giving us an armed escort through the treacherous, darkened streets. Or maybe I was the one who insisted. Cardinal Spellman was making one of his last appearances in Vietnam at that Mass, and I should have paid attention, but by that time I was so weary, I kept falling asleep. Jack Shea had to wake me. A couple of days later I met the Cardinal at the airport and apologized. I said, "I'm sorry, but I fell asleep three times during your Christmas service." He said, "Don't worry about it, Bob. That makes us even. I once caught your act at Loew's State." Don't Shoot, It's Only Me

Many of these performers were, like Hope, recent immigrants to America who saw a vaudeville career as one of the few ways to succeed as a "foreigner" in America. Throughout his extraordinary professional career of nearly seventy years, Bob Hope practiced the arts he learned in vaudeville and perpetuated variety entertainment traditions in stage musical comedy, motion pictures, radio, television, and the live appearances he made around the world in support of American armed forces. Today, the stage variety show is mostly a memory but its influence is pervasive thanks to the long and rich careers of vaudeville veterans like Bob Hope. Name at birth: Leslie Townes Hope Bob Hope was a triple-threat superstar of radio, film and television during the 1940s and 1950s. Primarily a comedian, Hope also acted, sang and danced a little, hosted his own radio and television shows, and carried on a famous comic feud with his friend and fellow star, crooner Bing Crosby . Hope spent much of World War II travelling the world to entertain Allied troops, a service he also performed with gusto during later wars in Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East; his entertain-the-troops tours became one of his enduring signatures. Though his superstar years ended in the 1960s, Hope continued to make appearances well into the 1990s. In May of 2003 he celebrated his 100th birthday with a typical wisecrack: "I'm so old they've cancelled my blood type." He died a few months later, in July 2003. Extra credit : Hope never won an Oscar for a film performance, but received five honorary Academy Awards for his contributions to the motion picture industry... He was a frequent host of the annual Academy Award ceremonies... Hope's love of golf was famous, and his annual golf tournament, the Bob Hope Desert Classic, became a regular stop on the PGA Tour... Hope was born in England but was raised in Cleveland, Ohio after his family moved there when Hope was four years old... Hope married Dolores Reade in 1934, and they remained married until his death in 2003; the couple adopted four children: Linda, Anthony, Honora (called Nora), and William Kelly... "Thanks For the Memory" was Hope's theme song; the tune came from his first feature film

Save big money! The Bob Hope Special was the longest-running television series of all time. No one who wasn't born between 1900 and 1975 could possibly understand what Bob Hope meant to the entire fabric of this country. He was safely sarcastic, a constant throughout all time and all media. Bob Hope started out in vaudeville, later launching a massively successful radio and movie career almost simultaneously. Hope first entered radio in 1933, but after The Big Broadcast of 1938 turned into a box office hit, he really caught fire. NBC's The Pepsodent Show Starring Bob Hope was the highest-rated program on radio during the second World War. THE ROAD TO TELEVISION Wisecracking Hope was one of the only radio and film stars to make a seamless transition into the new TV medium, and he did it by making each show a special. Hope began his monthly and semi-monthly television specials in 1950 when he was still the number-one box office draw in the land, starring in a long string of Paramount Pictures like F

From the Bob Hope to the Barclays, host courses are failing to lure Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson
    By Cameron Morfit
    Senior Writer, GOLF Magazine
    Published: January 16, 2008
Phil Mickelson once made it a point to start his season at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. The reason, he said, was the perfect weather, which is what you want when you're still feeling out your swing. But even before this week there was reason to worry that the relationship between Mickelson and the Hope was on the rocks. The tournament changed its host course to The Classic Club, a track that skeptics point out is near a wind farm for a reason. In 2006, in a scene from Chris Lewis's book, "The Scorecard Always Lies," Mickelson's caddie, Jim Mackay, remarks upon his first look, "This is the course they're replacing Indian Wells with? Are you kidding me?"
