Hubbard drove a two-run home run over the center field fence in the second game of the doubleheader to give her a school-record ninth home run on the season and a school-record 17th career home run. Hubbard, as a freshman last year, tied Destini Anderson¹s single-season record with eight round-trippers. With her nine this season, she eclipsed Anderson¹s career mark of 16. ³Kayla is a complete offensive player,² said Lady Bison coach Pam Fink. ³She¹s got power and speed and you like your chances of scoring every time she comes to the plate. Destini was a legend when she played here. For Kayla to claim two of her records in her second season is a big accomplishment.² OBU used the pitching of Kena Freeman to claim the opener. Freeman checked the Tigers on four hits ‹ all singles. She struck out five batters and lowered her earned run average to 1.15. She has four shutouts among her seven wins.

Cardinals ... Will McGwire ever be in the Hall of Fame? Posted Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at 2:32 PM
      Read comments
Respond Email link Mark McGwire, who broke the single-season home run record in 1998 while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, picked up one-tenth of a percent in the Hall of Fame voting from last year. He climbed from 23.5 to 23.6 percent of the vote from the members of the Baseball Writers Association of America that select the Hall of Famers. That's far short of the 75 percent required for entry to the Hall of Fame. McGwire hit 583 home runs in his career for the Oakland A's and the Cardinals, including his 70-homer season of 1998. But McGwire's testimony before a Congressional committee in 2005 left questions about his links to steroid usage during his playing career. It could be interesting when more players from the "Steroid Era" are on the ballot as well.

Her catalogue is a landmark in Homer studies. It puts Homer in his true relationship to illustration, to other American art and to the European and English examples he followed, from Ruskin to Millet ; its vivacity of argument matches that of the paintings. Cooper has brought together some two hundred watercolors-almost a third of Homer's known output. It is a wholly delectable show, and it makes clear why watercolor, in its special freshness and immediacy, gave Homer access to moments of vision he did not have in the weightier, slower diction of oils. "You will see, in the future I will live by my watercolors," Homer once remarked, and he was almost right. He came to the medium late: he was thirty-seven and a mature artist. A distinct air of the Salon, of the desire for a "major" utterance that leads to an overworked surface, clings to some of the early watercolors-in particular, the paintings of

Why some baseball records remain sacred
    sports columns By GERRY GOLDSTEIN
    The Providence Journal
Tuesday, July 17, 2007 One used to think that the last place to find ambiguity was in baseball statistics, where accomplishment is measured and archived strictly by the numbers. This attitude changed forever in 1961, when Roger Maris supposedly obliterated the most venerated number of them all 60 Babe Ruth's "unbreakable" record for home runs in a single season. We baseball fans revered that number; to us there was magic in it. Sixty home runs was a mark to stand forever a heroic milestone that conjured up misty images of a time when giants roamed the ballparks. Little wonder that traditionalists secretly and not so secretly hoped Maris would fail in his attempt to surpass the mythological Ruth. The pressure-cooker became so intense, in fact, that clumps of Maris's hair began falling out.

Review of The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark
(by Dennis R. MacDonald; Yale University, 2000)
    by
    Richard Carrier
An Incredible Book This is an incredible book that must be read by everyone with an interest in Christianity. MacDonald's shocking thesis is that the Gospel of Mark is a deliberate and conscious anti-epic, an inversion of the Greek "Bible" of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey
Background and Purpose of Mark MacDonald begins by describing what scholars of antiquity take for granted: anyone who learned to write Greek in the ancient world learned from Homer. Homer was the textbook. Students were taught to imitate Homer, even when writing on other subjects, or to rewrite passages of Homer in prose, using different vocabulary. Thus, we can know for certain that the author of Mark's Gospel was thoroughly familiar with the works of Homer and well-trained in recasting Homeric verse into new prose tales. The status of Homer in basic education remained throughout antiquity, despite the fact that popular and intellectual sentiment had been sternly against the ethics and theology of his epics since the age of Classical Greece. Authors from Plato (400 b.c.e) to Plutarch (c. 100 c.e.) sought to resolve this problem by "reinterpreting" Homer as allegory, or by expunging or avoiding offensive passages, neither of which was a perfect solution. For the Latin language, the opportunity was afforded for Virgil to solve this problem by recasting the Homeric epic into Roman form, exhibiting Roman ideals and creating more virtuous heroes and gods. Likewise, borrowing and recasting from Homer is evident in numerous works of fiction, which often had a religious flavor, and were proliferating in the very same period as the Gospels. One prominent example (mentioned but not emphasized by MacDonald) is the
