PLANET OF THE APES
PLANET OF THE APES
DIRECTOR: Franklin J. Schaffner, 1968
"Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!" PLANET OF THE APES is an outstanding science-fiction film that spawned four sequels, an animated cartoon series, a live-action TV series, bubble-gum cards, Halloween masks, and a rash of plastic models. The original film is still quite an achievement.
SYNOPSIS:
"TAKE YOUR STICKING PAWS OFF MEYOU DAMN DIRTY APE!!!" "Finally, really did it! YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP!! DAMN YOU! G*D DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!'" The last shot the viewer sees is the Statue of Liberty half blown up.
PLANET OF THE APES is a success on many levels, with a witty, intelligent script by Rod Serling and an outstanding, hot-tempered, athletic performance from Charlton Heston makes it the number one SciFi classic for many. Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter are excellent as a pair of sympathetic ape scientist and doctor, respectively, with John Chambers's superb latex makeup allowing them a full range of expressive facial gestures. Chambers won a special Oscar for his extraordinary makeup work. None of the sequels (BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES)

Biography
Steely jawed, hard bodied, terse in speech, Charlton Heston is an American man's man, an epic unto himself. While he has played modern men, he is at his best when portraying larger-than-life figures from world history, preferably with his shirt off. He was born John Charleton Carter on October 4, 1924 and originally trained in the classics in Northwestern University's drama program, gaining early experience playing the lead in a 1941 filmed school production of Peer Gynt. He also performed on the radio, and then went on to serve in the Air Force for three years during WWII. Afterwards, he went to work as a model in New York, where he met his wife, fellow model Lydia Clarke , to whom he is still happily married. Later the two operated a theater in Asheville, North Carolina where Heston honed his acting skills. He made his Broadway debut in

Charlton Heston: going from left to right
Brattle mini-fest shows actor's wide political spectrum
August 17, 2007 Why was Charlton Heston pointing his trigger finger at Bob Dylan? There they were, a cultural Mutt and Jeff, 10 years ago at the White House, as Kennedy Center honorees: Heston, the pillar of the Hollywood establishment and National Rifle Association president who famously declared "You can take my rifle . . . when you pry it from my cold dead hands!," and Dylan, the anti-establishment icon who in "Masters of War" took a rather different view of weaponry. Poor Lauren Bacall must have felt like a UN peacekeeping mission. Or did she? "Charlton Heston's Apocalypse," a mini-festival that plays at the Brattle Theatre through Monday might indicate there was a safeguard on the trigger. Heston and Dylan were likely recalling time spent on the barricades not toe to toe, but shoulder to shoulder. Long before he was tangling with Michael Moore in "Bowling for Columbine" (2002), Heston was demonstrating with Martin Luther King at the March on Washington. Dylan was there, too. Except Heston wasn't singing with Joan Baez. He was at the front of the march, alongside such celebrated Hollywood liberals as Burt Lancaster, Marlon Brando, Sidney Poitier, and Paul Newman. He wasn't the first star to make the journey from left to right. The most obvious example is Ronald Reagan. Others include James Cagney and Frank Sinatra. But Heston's ideological journey is all the more striking for the fact that several of his movies can be read in overtly liberal terms.

Charlton Heston was one of the biggest movie stars of the 1950s, a rugged leading man known for his roles in epics like The Ten Commandments (1956, as Moses) and Ben-Hur (1959, winning Heston an Oscar as best actor). In the 1960s and '70s Heston was still a box-office draw in adventures and westerns, including Planet of the Apes. He was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1966-1971. On october 1997, he was ranked #28 in Empire (UK) magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list. In 1997 he was elected 1st Vice-President, National Rifle ...

    Charlton Heston
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film Born John Charles Carter in Evanston, IL; educated at Northwestern University. Commanding male lead, a one-person Hollywood trek through the pages of world history and a forceful, Republican vision of a world in which America always wins. An acting student at Northwestern, Charlton Heston first acted on film in a student production of PEER GYNT (1941). After WW II service, he and wife Lydia Clarke worked as models in New York and ran a theatre in Asheville, NC, before Heston found success on Broadway in Katherine Cornell's production of Antony and Cleopatra (1947). He also made a vivid impression on early TV, especially in a flurry of dashing romantic leads (Heathcliff, Rochester, Petruchio) on the famous drama anthology Studio One. By the time he went to Hollywood to act in William Dieterle's moody film noir DARK CITY (1950) Heston was already a star, indeed was listed in the credits over the more established Lizabeth Scott. Over the next four decades he rarely had less than top billing. With his role as the ill-tempered circus manager in his second film, Cecil B. DeMille's THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH (1952), Heston began his reign as the actor of choice for Hollywood epics. Solidly built, but with a lithe walk, boasting an iron jaw, a granite-carved profile and a voice to go with them, he could intimidate opponents with just a glare. Few actors could dish up righteous anger with such force, yet even though many of his screen creations could be unpleasantly hostile, the power of his presence invariably commanded respect, conveyed integrity (even in villainous roles) and often managed to be likable. There was something timeless about his rueful expression and his brand of gritty heroism. At the same time, though, he glorified a concept of the power of the individual which was perfectly in step with middle America's vision of how the world should be.

In The Ten Commandments , I Performed All My Own Miracles
    By Charlton Heston
Whenever people talk about The Ten Commandments , a film I made 50 years ago with a fellow named Cecil B. DeMille, they go on and on about the impressive "special effects." So let me take this opportunity to set the record straight: I performed all my own miracles in that picture, so if you're going to praise someone, it should be me. There was nothing in that movie that I didn't make happen with my own two hands. I realize some of these so-called actors today rely on camera tricks and computers to do their jobs for them, but I'm not one to allow some punk editor to cut and paste me into the middle of a Red Sea I didn't part myself. I rode a chariot in Ben-Hur for Pete's sake, and you can be darn sure I'll channel God's power to move a little water about when I need to.

    Speech by Charlton Heston
    "Winning The Cultural War"
    Harvard Law School Forum
February 16, 1999 I remember my son when he was five, explaining to his kindergarten class what his father did for a living. "My Daddy," he said, "pretends to be people." There have been quite a few of them. Prophets from the Old and New Testaments, a couple of Christian saints, generals of various nationalities and different centuries, several kings, three American presidents, a French cardinal and two geniuses, including Michelangelo. If you want the ceiling re-painted I'll do my best. There always seem to be a lot of different fellows up here. I'm never sure which one of them gets to talk. Right now, I guess I'm the guy. As I pondered our visit tonight it struck me: If my Creator gave me the gift to connect you with the hearts and minds of those great men, then I want to use that same gift now to re-connect you with your own sense of liberty ... your own freedom of thought ... your own compass for what is right. Dedicating the memorial at Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln said of America, "We are now engaged in a great Civil War, testing whether this nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure." Those words are true again. I believe that we are again engaged in a great civil war, a cultural war that's about to hijack your birthright to think and say what resides in your heart. I fear you no longer trust the pulsing lifeblood of liberty inside you ... the stuff that made this country rise from wilderness into the miracle that it is.

"'Why don't you ask Welles to direct, too? He's a pretty good director, you know.' Well...you'd have thought I'd suggested that my mother direct." THE POST OFFICE in St. Helen, Michigan, was still in the back of the cobblestone general store I remember from when I was a kid and you remember from the movies. There was nothing in the box one day but another script, from Universal. It was called Badge of Evil. I started to read it that evening, and finished it the next morning-an okay police story. As I'd promised, I phoned the studio. "It's not a bad script," I said. "But police stories are like westerns: you guys've been making them for more than fifty years-all the great ideas are used up. It really depends on who's directing. Have you set anyone?" "Well ... no, actually. [Pause, then brightly:] We've got Orson Welles to play the heavy, though." Now I paused. Could they really not have thought of the obvious? "Why don't you ask him to direct, too? He's a pretty good director, you know." Well ... you'd have thought I'd suggested that my mother direct the film. "Oh! Ahh, yes, Citizen Kane and ... umm ... yes. Interesting. It would be, that is. To direct. For him .. ah, to direct. The film. We'll, ahh, get back to you. On that." Whereupon I hung up, bemused.

Lead them into a land of Mountain Dew and Bugles!” And so, I the Prophet received the Ten Commandments of Villainy, to help steer the chosen people from cliches of necromancers and demon lords. I'm going to discuss making something important to the health and well-being of your campaign. You need to make an adversary. Not just a mere villain, but a dyed-in-the-wool, honest to Pelor son of an otyugh that'll make your PCs cringe with fear, loathing and/or symbolic hatred. So Here is my fairly sensible list of things that are helpful for a good villain.

    Charlton Heston Detailed Biography
Charlton Heston (born October 4, 1923) is an American film actor, known for playing larger-than-life heroic roles such as Moses in The Ten Commandments and Judah Ben-Hur in Ben-Hur. He has been long involved in political issues and was president of the National Rifle Association between 1998 to 2001 and was elected to the board of directors from 2001 to 2003. Heston was born John Charles Carter in Evanston, Illinois to Lila Charlton and Russell Whitford Carter, a mill operator. When he was ten, his parents divorced. Shortly thereafter, his mother married Chester Heston. The new family moved to well-off Wilmette, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. Heston (his new surname) attended New Trier High School. He enrolled in the school's drama program, where he performed with such outstanding results that he earned a drama scholarship to Northwestern University from the Winnetka Community Theatre in which he was also active. While still in high school, he played in the silent 16 mm amateur film adaptation of Peer Gynt made by David Bradley. Several years later the same team produced the first sound version of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, in which Heston played Marc Antony.
