Katharine Hepburn is my all time favorite actress and a person I greatly admire. I've watched all of her films and seen her on the stage several times. I can't say enough about her; I just love her. Even her weaker films (of which, there are very few) are easy for me to watch. I have always been fascinated by her acting and her personality. All through this site, I will refer to Ms. Hepburn as "Kate". I take such liberties because, although I've never met her, she has been a big part of my life and therefore, I feel close enough to call her by her first name. Somehow I don't think she'd mind. There was a time when she, through her films, gave me support that cannot be measured. I had just gone through a break up of my marriage and come back to Philadelphia with no place to live and no job. While I stayed with friends and looked for work, I noticed that there just happened to be a Katharine Hepburn Film Festival going on at a local movie theater. I spent all my free time, during that week, seeing all of Kate's old films and to this day, I thank her for the pleasure they gave me, as well as, helping me get through a particularly rough time in my life. That is why I decided to do this tribute to her.

Katharine Hepburn won four Academy Awards in an acting career which lasted more than 60 years. She began making movies in the 1930s and succeeded almost immediately, winning her first Oscar for Morning Glory in 1933. Hepburn's characters were often brash or even haughty on the outside, yet emotionally fragile at their core; her quick wit, intelligence and high-class bearing served her especially well in comedies, notably with co-stars Cary Grant and Spencer Tracy . She is perhaps best known for her role as a prim missionary opposite Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen . She won two more Oscars for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967, with Tracy and Sidney Poitier ) and The Lion In Winter (1968), and toward the end of her career the nostalgic On Golden Pond (1981, with Henry Fonda ) got her a 12th nomination and a fourth Oscar. In 1996 she retired to Connecticut and lived there quietly until her death in 2003. Extra credit : After a short marriage, Hepburn divorced in 1934 and remained single; she had a long love affair with

One of a Kind
Hepburn, in her eighties, after an icy winter swim
From the tribute
In my favorite John Bryson photograph, shown above, Katharine Hepburn is coming out of the icy surf of Long Island Sound on a bitterly cold day in February, running toward Fenwick, her beloved family home. All we see is her back, but we can tell she's fit and hardy, this octogenarian, fresh from her daily swim and waving her towel like a flag.
In her early years she looked as ravishing as Garbo, all cheekbones and lithe movement. An athlete, she was still in peak form at the age of 45, when she golfed, biked, swam and boxed her way through Pat and Mike. As she aged and weathered, as her hands and head began to shake with palsy, she worked these elements into her roles. After she jumped into a Venice canal for a stunt in Summertime and contracted incurable conjunctivitis, she used her perpetually watering eyes to sentimental advantage in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

An Uncommon Woman: Katharine Hepburn
By Al Weisel
Premiere, September 2003, pp. 84-88, 104-106 No one worked harder at creating an image and living up to it than Katharine Hepburn. From the moment she made her debut in 1932's A Bill of Divorcement, her intelligence, grace, and architecturally imposing cheekbones made her stand out from her kewpie-doll-cute contemporaries. She won her first Oscar for her third film, Morning Glory, but her strong-willed heroines were not always an easy sell, and her career began to falter. Yet she was canny enough to poke fun at her missteps, taking a speech from her infamous Broadway flop The Lake —"The Stage Door. She staged her own comeback by buying the rights to The Philadelphia Story. From then on, she controlled every aspect of her career and her life. Her next project, Woman of the Year, kicked off a storied 26-year romance with Spencer Tracy, with whom she made nine films. Although Tracy refused to divorce his wife, Hepburn was committed to him unconditionally until his death. As she got older, she refused to fade from the limelight; instead she took on some of her most challenging roles and won three more Oscars, for a record total of four (out of 12 nominations) in acting. If she could have heard all the tributes after her death in June at age 96, she probably would have said, "Oh, shut up!" She didn't need anyone to tell her she was great. After all, she worked damned hard at it. "EVERYBODY REMEMBERS THE FIRST TIME THEY MET KATHARINE HEPBURN"

Monday Musing: Hepburn and Heloise, A Tribute to the Defiance of Women
(On the occasion of a recent viewing of The Philadelphia Story For Shuffy. In the early twelfth century a brilliant philosopher and logician named Abelard fell in love with a remarkable young woman named Heloise. Abelard tricked her uncle into thinking that he would be giving her academic tutoring and then the two fell into a torrid love affair in which the rest of the world seemed to melt away. But the world always comes back. The uncle discovered the ruse and plotted his revenge. Eventually, the uncle hired several men to break into Abelard’s home and chop off his testicles. Abelard became a monk and Heloise a nun. But before that fateful day Abelard proposed that he would marry Heloise and though this would end his career as scholar and teacher and force them into a layman’s life it might protect them from further censure or retribution. Heloise refused and then later acquiesced, though it did nothing to prevent their terrible fate. In his Historia calamitatum , Aberlard, rather self-absorbedly, relates that Heloise realized that marriage would have removed his great mind from the public sphere and could not allow such an event to occur. In a letter written to Abelard many years after the events in question Heloise corrects him on this matter. Referring to Abelard’s

Katharine Hepburn quote from http://www.traditioninaction.org
Quote: “With stout resolve,” reports a fashion book, “she almost single-handedly broke down the dress code for women” by insisting on wearing men’s trousers on set and off, everywhere and all the time. Her style was so informal and untraditional that she never, even after becoming a star, owned a dress or skirt of her own. One of her many awards came from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in1986 – in recognition of her role as non-conformist in modern fashion.

Her androgynous, modern style was a breath of fresh air in a generation where cleavage, curves and pouts were everywhere. Her characteristic New England accent perfectly suited her strong, head-strong nature.
