born May 12, 1907, Hartford, Connecticut, U.S. died June 29, 2003, Old Saybrook, Connecticut indomitable American stage and film actress, known as a spirited performer with a touch of eccentricity. She introduced into her roles a strength of character previously considered to be undesirable in Hollywood leading ladies. As an actress she was noted for her brisk upper-class New England accent and tomboyish beauty. (1932), she was invited to Hollywood by RKO Radio Pictures. Hepburn was an unlikely Hollywood star. Possessing a distinctive speech pattern and an abundance of quirky mannerisms, she earned unqualified praise from her admirers and unmerciful criticism from her detractors. Unabashedly outspoken and iconoclastic, she did as she pleased, refusing to grant interviews, wearing casual clothes at a time when actresses were expected to exude glamour 24 hours a day, and openly clashing with her more experienced coworkers whenever they failed to meet her standards. She nonetheless made an impressive movie debut in A Bill of Divorcement (1932) and went on to win an Academy Award for her third film

In a time where Hollywood and the fashion industry was bursting with curves, kisses, and sex appeal Katharine's non-conformist style stood out amongst the rest.
Her style was masculine and casual she wore trousers, all the time. Even with her "manly" wardrobe she still managed to look beautiful, stylish, and intelligent.
Hepburn won a Council of Fashion Designers of America in1986 which recognized her non-conformist view of fashion.

A Centennial Tribute to Katharine Hepburn
Katharine Hepburn was one of the few "constants" left for classic movie fans, and her death at the age of 96 left a huge void in our hearts. It seemed as if she had always been there and in fact she was a movie actress since Herbert Hoover was President. We now celebrate what would have been her 100th birthday, on May 12, 2007. She was full of contradictions. Though always gorgeous, she is not usually thought of as a glamour girl; while never a cult figure like Marilyn, she still finished second to MM in the balloting for our Favorite Classic Actress award and was #1 in the AFI voting for favorite actress; while she is known world wide, and is the only actress who consistently shows up on lists of the world's most admired women, she always insisted on being just one of the folks in Hartford, CT.

“Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to getonly what you are expecting to givewhich is everything. What you will receive in return varies. But it really has no connection with what you give. You give because you love and cannot help giving.” – Katharine Hepburn
Katharine Hepburn will long be remembered as Hollywood’s greatest actress. Although many people will not remember she led a rich and interesting life. She was an immensely complicated, intelligent, and driven individual. Additionally, she was the Antichrist.
The daughter of her urologist doctor father Thomas Norval Hepburn and suffragette namesake mother Katharine Houghton, Katharine was an athletic tomboy as a child, and was very shy around girls her age. She was largely schooled at home. She did attend Bryn Mawr College, however, and it was here that she decided to become an actress, appearing in many of their productions. After graduating, she went on to perform in several plays on and off Broadway. She finally broke into stardom with the lead role of the Amazon princess Antiope in "A Warrior's Husband" (1932). Film offers followed. RKO signed her to a contract. She made five films between 1932 and 1934. For her third, Morning Glory (1933) she won her first Academy Award. Her fourth, Little Women (1933) was the most successful picture of its day.

  • Acting is one of the lesser skills man can possess. Honestly, Shirley Temple was doing it when she was four years old! Acting is the perfect idiot's profession. As for me, prizes are nothing. My prize is my work. Being a housewife and a mother is the biggest job in the world, but if it doesn't interest you, don't do it - I would have made a terrible mother. Death will be a great relief. No more interviews. Drive on. We'll sweep up the blood later! Enemies are so stimulating. I can remember walking as a child. It was not customary to say you were fatigued. It was customary to complete the goal of the expedition. I don't care what is written about me so long as it isn't true. I have many regrets, and I'm sure everyone does. The stupid things you do, you regret if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. I never realized until lately that women were supposed to be the inferior sex.

Katharine Hepburn Media One of America's most accomplished actresses; winner of four Academy Awards. Katharine Hepburn was born and raised in Hartford and West Hartford . She was the daughter of Katharine Martha Houghton, a member of the rich and socially prominent family that founded the Corning Glass Works and an active supporter of women's rights, and Dr. Thomas Hepburn, a prominent surgeon. The second of five children, Katharine was bright and independent and excelled in athletics. She became interested in the theater at an early age, and at 8, she dramatized Uncle Tom's Cabin, cast it with neighborhood children and presented it in the tiny theater that her father had built for her in the back yard. In 1918, Katharine enrolled at Oxford School and in 1924, at Bryn Mawr College, where she was known as a strange, aloof young woman with few friends. During her first two years at Bryn Mawr, she did not do well scholastically, nor did she participate in any college activities, but sometime during this period she decided that she would become an actress. Two days after her graduation from college, and over the strenuous objections of her father, she began work in a stock company in Baltimore. It was here that she began her long and illustrious acting career. She has received four Oscars and twelve Academy Award nominations; she was named best actress for Morning Glory (1933), Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968) and On Golden Pond (1981). Among her other honors are a gold medal as the “world's best motion picture actress” from The Venice International Motion Picture Exposition (1934) and being named “Woman of the Year” by Harvard's Hasty Pudding Club (1958).

Katharine Hepburn
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film Born in Hartford, Connecticut. Katharine Hepburn was born to a very wealthy and prominent New England family; her father was a famous surgeon, her mother an early crusader for women's rights. After graduating from Bryn Mawr College in 1928, she embarked on a career as a theatrical actress, training diligently with drama and voice coaches. She appeared in numerous summer stock and Broadway productions, gathering a reputation for flinty independence. Her 1932 Broadway appearance in The Warrior's Husband led to a film contract with RKO. Hepburn's film debut in A BILL OF DIVORCEMENT (1932) was a propitious one, for it teamed her with director George Cukor, with whom Hepburn would collaborate on some of her best films. In Hepburn's early films she often portrayed strong female characters, anticipating feminist concerns in such works as LITTLE WOMEN (1933) and STAGE DOOR (1937), which depict women in mutually supportive relationships. SYLVIA SCARLETT (1935), perhaps the most notable early example of the androgyny that runs through Hepburn's career, was a groundbreaking film for its undermining of socially constructed norms of femininity and masculinity. Hepburn won the first of her four Academy Awards for MORNING GLORY (1933), but five years later she was forced to buy out her contract from RKO rather than appear in a woefully unsuitable film, MOTHER CAREY'S CHICKENS. Hepburn, an intelligent, individualistic woman who knew her own strengths and weaknesses, often refused inappropriate casting, publicity and the superficialities of Hollywood fashion and society. In 1938, after starring in a fine version of Philip Barry's play HOLIDAY at Columbia opposite Cary Grant, she returned to Broadway to do

Her mother, Katharine Houghton, was a well-known political activist, prominent in the movement to secure women's rights to vote, and an early proponent of birth control and family planning. Influenced by her mother's outspoken individualism, Katharine Hepburn grew up with her own sense of self, somewhat aloof, but confident and fiercely independent. Katherine attended the Oxford School for Girls in Hartford, Connecticut, and then continued her education at Bryn Mawr in Philadelphia. While at Bryn Mawr, she decided that acting was her calling. I mmediately after graduating from Bryn Mawr, Katharine joined a stock theater company, beginning a lifelong career as an actress. Katherine Hepburn Katharine Hepburn was born in 1907 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her father was a doctor and the family was very well off financially. Dr. Hepburn was a direct descendent of James Hepburn 4th Earl of Boswell. Her mother was years ahead of her time and campaigned for such causes as family planning. In 1928 Kate married businessman Ludlow Ogden Smith. They divorced April 30, 1933. Kate made her professional debut in the play "The Czarina" in 1928 in Baltimore. "A Bill of Divorcement" (1932) was her first film. She won an Academy Award for her third film "Morning Glory"(1933). She would go on to win four Best Actress Awards. In addition to "Morning Glory", she won for "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"(1967), "The Lion in Winter"(1968), and "On Golden Pond"(1981). Miss Hepburn was branded box office poison in the late thirties. She brought her talents to Broadway in "The Philadelphia Story" which was written specially for her by Philip Barry. The play was such a hit that Hollywood again came beckoning. The film was an even bigger hit than the play and once again Kate was back on top.
