"Follow your enthusiasm. It's something I've always believed in. Find those parts of you life you enjoy the most. Do what you enjoy doing." -Jim Henson
Jim Henson was born on the twenty-forth day of September in the year 1936 in a small town in Mississippi. Around 1946, Henson left Mississippi with his family and moved to a small suburb of Washington DC. During high school, Henson started performing with puppets for a television station (WTOP). He then attended college and (along with one of his classmates, Jane Nebel) started working for an NBC subsidiary television company performing his own puppets on a magazine show. These puppets, which Henson called 'Muppets,' became very popular and soon received their own air time with the show of his own creation, "Sam and Friends" (1955-1961). It is during this time that Henson marries Jane Nebel (1959). After "Sam and Friends" Henson began to pursue past interests, particularly film. In 1964, Henson created the Academy-nominated Timepiece . A surreal film regarding time in which Henson wrote, directed, produced and starred in. He also made

The incredibly prolific mind of Jim Henson (1936-90) was a veritable celebration of ideas for wondrous creatures and characters, stories, songs, and imagery. From the earliest age, Henson drew pictures, wrote jokes, built mobiles, and planned whole worlds. He thought in three dimensions and experimented in a huge variety of media, both with still and moving images. He was fascinated with how ideas are formed, how they interconnect in the mind, and how they can be shared through the visual and performing arts. "The strong legacy of family fun Jim Henson created still resonates around the world," said Anita Bizzotto, U.S. Postal Service Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President, who dedicated the stamps. "When people see the stamps, they will be a reminder of the man who taught us to not take human flaws so seriously - a reminder that one person can make 'a difference in this world,' " she said, referring to Henson's quotation on the stamp selvage.
Joining Bizzotto in dedicating these stamps were Lisa and Brian Henson, children of Henson and Co-Chief Executive Officers of The Jim Henson Company ( http://www.henson.com http://www.emmys.tv ); and, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy ( http://www.muppets.com Lisa Henson characterized the stamps as fitting her father's sense of humor. "We are honored that the U.S. Postal Service chose to recognize our father's legacy with this fun and irreverent stamp collection - a perfect reflection of his inspired silliness and creativity." Her brother Brian welcomed the stamps as an homage to his father's work. "Our father created wonderful characters that continue to be loved around the world. These stamps are also a tribute to his millions of fans who continue to support his work and believe in his vision," added Brian Henson.

A BIOGRAPHY OF JIM HENSON
Courtesy of the Jim Henson Company Jim Henson was born at King’s Daughters Hospital in Greenville, Mississippi on September 24, 1936, the second son of Paul and Betty Henson. Jim spent his early years in Leland, MS. where his father had an assignment with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He remembered spending countless happy hours, alone and with friends, exploring the shorelines of Deer Creek, not far from his parents’ house. Throughout his childhood, Jim Henson had an interest in both art and television. Young Jim was particularly close to his maternal grandmother and visited her often at the family home in Maryland. As an avid painter, quilter, and needleworker, she was supportive of his artistic efforts and encouraged him to use his imagination and to take delight in the world around him. When Jim was in the fifth grade, the Henson family returned to Maryland where Jim, often with his older brother Paul, experimented with a variety of artistic techniques. In 1954, while still in high school, he began his television career performing puppets on a local Washington, DC Saturday morning program on WTOP-TV. The following year, as a freshman at the University of Maryland, he was given his own twice-daily, five-minute show, Sam and Friends, on the local NBC affiliate, WRC-TV. Jim's first performing partner was Jane Nebel, whom he met at the University, and who later became his wife. Sam and Friends introduced many Muppet mainstays—music, snarky humor and technical tricks. The show also featured an early version of Kermit the Frog, who later became the most famous Muppet of all.

Jim Henson at Maryland
In 1954, Jim Henson (Class of'60) enrolled at the University of Maryland and began to take studio art classes there, thinking that he might eventually become a commercial artist. A good deal of his artwork from the period has survived, and it indicates that Jim had a lively visual imagination, a considerable facility with color, and an impeccable eye for detail. The strong, simple images he produced anticipated the effective simplification of the puppets he would later design. An example of his early work was Kermit (and "Sam and Friends"), designed in 1955.
