Jim Henson created the Muppets, a troupe of comic puppets who starred in TV shows and films beginning in the 1950s. The Muppets joined the cast of the children's TV show Sesame Street , launched in 1969; the show made stars of Henson creations like Kermit the Frog, Bert and Ernie, and Big Bird. Henson's own The Muppet Show was a syndicated hit from 1976-81 (and introduced the popular character Miss Piggy); the show led to movies including The Muppet Movie (1979, with cameos by Bob Hope Orson Welles and others) and The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984). Henson made a deal to sell his company to the Walt Disney corporation in 1989; the deal fell through the next year, when Henson died of organ failure after an infection turned into toxic shock syndrome.

Jim Henson: Changing the Face of Children's Entertainment Forever
Of course, Jim Henson did much more than children's entertainment. He changed the world of puppetry forever and made both children and adults laugh, love and their imaginations ignite with his unique characters. This is my tribute to one of the most important men in my childhood. Though I never met him, his contributions to my life are endless.
Why Jim Henson?
I can remember being very small, sitting directly in front of the television and watching The Muppet Show. Images from that show were imprinted onto the fabric of my mind at a very early age and my love for Kermit and the gang would be carried from those moments to this very day.
Sesame Street and The Muppet Show were probably the pre-cursors to my rabid love of fantasy and humor. Later, shows like Fraggle Rock and movies like The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth would broaden that love even further.
Jim, according to those that worked with him, was not only a master creator and puppeteer, but also a gentle, loving person who enjoyed seeing those that worked with him succeed even more than he did himself. This gracious spirit could be seen through the characters that were seemingly an extension of his personality, Kermit the Frog and Rowlf the Dog.

Jim Henson can be credited with many accomplishments: he had the most profound influence on children of any entertainer of his time; he adapted the ancient art of puppetry to the most modern of mediums, television, transforming both; he created a TV show that was one of the most popular on earth. But Henson's greatest achievement was broader than any of these. Through his work, he helped sustain the qualities of fancifulness, warmth and consideration that have been so threatened by our coarse, cynical age. Louis Armstrong

    September 24, 1936 - May 16, 1990
Exhausted and frustrated, I came home after a difficult day of publishing a yearbook. We were under a lot of pressure trying to complete our deadlines. As I entered my home that Wednesday (about 5:15 PM), I met my family. They asked me "if I had heard." They told me that Jim Henson had died of pneumonia in a hospital earlier that day. As was the case for all of us, his death came as such a surprise. He was only 53. If Jim would've gone to the hospital sooner, he might still be with us. However, it was his nature not to inconvenience anyone. He thought he had a simple head cold. By the time he realized it was serious, a severe bacterial infection had developed and it was already too late. Even though I never met Jim Henson, it was a dream of mine to do so. I am sure many of you shared that same dream. However, whether you knew Jim personally or not, we all

HENSON, JIM U.S. Muppeteer-Producer Jim Henson's most significant contribution to television culture was his imaginative ability. His creative talents are responsible for perhaps the most recognizable and beloved television characters of all timethe puppet/marionette hybrids better known as the Muppets. For over three decades, the Muppets have entertained children and adults in myriad pop culture arenas, however, they are most associated with the television legacy known as Sesame Street As an adolescent, Henson was fascinated with television. His desire to work for the blossoming industry was inadvertently realized through the craft he considered merely a hobby-puppetry. His first puppet creations premiered on a local television station, an NBC affiliate in Maryland, which picked up Henson's five-minute puppet show and ran it prior to The Huntley-Brinkley Report and The Tonight Show.
