Norway - Norwegians have the special advantages of abundant space and traditionally close contact with nature. Cross-country skiing and all forms of skating are national pastimes in the long winter season. Figure skater Sonja Henie is one of Norway's most famous athletes, having captured gold medals in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Winter Games and subsequently becoming a major international film star. Norway ... Olympic Games - The Chamonix Games were originally staged as International Winter Sports Week, a meet sponsored by the IOC but not sanctioned as an official Olympic Games. Well-organized and equipped with new facilities, the event was a success and led the IOC to amend its charter in 1925, establishing the Winter Games. Chamonix was thereafter recognized as the first Winter Olympics. QUEEN OF ICE
SONJA HENIE
By Reidar Børjeson
There is hardly anyone who has dominated the sport of figure skating such as Sonja Henie. She can safely be described as a main attraction in the history of sport both during her time as an amateur and later as a professional. Sonja Henie was one of a kind. Her equal on ice will probably never be found. Times have changed and the nature of the Olympic competitions has been altered. She was a champion on ice and a champion in her heart. Her name was known worldwide and still is. She will always be the prototype for all future figure skaters. Sonja Henie was born in Oslo on April 8, 1912. She was the only daughter of Wilhelm Henie and his wife Selma. He had inherited a very profitable fur business, and in 1894 he won the world bicycle championship. He knew by experience what it would take to reach the top, and he more than anyone else guided his daughter in her career. Her mother was also a tremendous support for her daughter throughout her life. She also designed all of her beautiful skating outfits (costumes) during her amateur time. Sonja Henie had from her parents inherited both an excellent physics and also high competition spirit. From the age of 5 she went to ballet classes and the following year she was given her first pair of skates. From this day on she spent all her time on the ice rink. It didn’t take long before she entered small competitions. The very first price she was awarded was a pearl handled paper cutter, which became her most priced possession all her life. She had the best coaches, the professional Oscar Holthe and Martin Stixrud.

She introduced short skirts, white skates, and flirtatious moves. Her spectacular spins and jumps raised the bar for all competitors. In 1936, Twentieth-Century Fox signed her to star in

Entertainment Magazine Bathing in mink and enormous diamonds, the tiny blonde queen of ice and celluloid, who was the highest paid woman in film, always demanded to be treated as a star, which she was. Sonja Henie was born the daughter of a furrier, Wilhelm, and his wife Selma, April 8, 1912, in Kristiania, now Oslo, Norway. She learned to dance at four, and began ice-skating at five. At eleven, Sonja won the Figure Skating Championship of Norway, while wearing a flowing skirt designed by her mother, which at the time was considered risque. At thirteen, Sonja earned second place in the World Championships, and at fourteen she won the World Title, which she held on to for ten consecutive years. Deciding to turn professional, tiny, five-foot-three, blonde Henie made her way to Hollywood where she undertook exhaustive beauty treatments to make her more appealing as the movie star she intended to be. Studio executives wanted to see the famed skater in movies, but they felt her asking price was outrageous. Sonja demanded that she be paid $75,000 to appear in a film, a fortune at that time, and insisted it be written specifically for her talents. The studio balked at first. To prove her worth to them, Henie rented an ice rink and produced and starred in her own

From All Movie Guide: Upon receiving a pair of skates for her sixth birthday, Norwegian entertainer Sonja Henie decided to forego a dancing career for a life on the ice. To refine her technique, Henie continued taking ballet lessons, at one point studying with a former teacher of Anna Pavlova. She won the first of her ten World Skating titles in Oslo at age 14; she went on to win honors at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympics. In 1936 she turned professional, touring the world in her own ice show. Thus, Henie was already a very wealthy woman when she was signed to a Hollywood contract at 20th Century-Fox.
