Interview and Photo by Blase DiStefano This interview ran in OutSmart magazine, November 1998. odd Haynes, wearing blue jeans and a blue -jean jacket, walks down the long staircase to the lobby of the Houstonian Hotel. My first impression is of a young, attractive, light-haired man; as he approaches me with his wide smile, my impression changes to a young, attractive, light-haired man who needs the care of a hairdresser. OK, so he's doing one interview after another and he's a little stressed, and maybe he just washed his hair and didn't have time to dry it. H e's conducting these ongoing interviews for his new film Velvet Goldmine , starring Trainspotting 's Ewan McGregor. Goldmine is a tribute to the glam-rock era of the early '70s in London—to David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Brian Ferry and "the extraordinary inversions they imposed," says Haynes, "on our notions of the performance, sexuality, and identity."

Director Todd Haynes' 'I'm Not There' Probes Many Faces of Bob Dylan By Adam Phillips
New York 17 January 2008 Phillips report - Download MP3 (1.54MB) Listen to Phillips report Most of the world's popular music lovers are familiar with the singer-songwriter Bob Dylan . But given the wildly different "faces" Dylan has projected over his nearly half century in the public eye, it can be hard to get a sense of the man behind such songs as Blowin' In the Wind, Just Like a Woman , and You Gotta Serve Somebody . Exploring that enigma was the challenge taken up by director Todd Haynes when he created I'm Not There , a dramatic — and many say Oscar-worthy — feature film. VOA's Adam Phillips reports, Haynes chose to portray several of the more intriguing Bob Dylan personas — from folk hero and poet to rock star, born-again Christian and outlaw — as separate characters by well-known stars.

The Freewheelin' Todd Haynes By Christine Vachon ’83 After director Todd Haynes’s triumph with Far From Heaven , which was nominated for four Academy Awards, you’d think getting Hollywood backing for his next film would be a slam-dunk. Right? Wrong. For I’m Not There , his look at the life and times of Bob Dylan, Haynes had secured song rights from the famously unpredictable bard, and had recruited Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, and Richard Gere to play various incarnations of Dylan. But producers were leery. So Haynes turned once more to his longtime producer Christine Vachon, who pieced together funding from French and Italian investors. Now completed, I’m Not There earned strong reviews at the Venice International Film Festival in September and opened in November in New York City and Los Angeles, before being released around the country.

          What are these?
By Jonathan Romney Sunday, 16 December 2007 In his new film I'm Not There, which reimagines the multiple lives and times of Bob Dylan, Haynes, by his own admission, borrows liberally once again: "Fellini, Godard, Richard Lester's Beatles films, late-1960s hippie Westerns..." But more than a pastiche artist, Haynes is a masquerader who delves into a vast stylistic dressing-up bag to get under the skins of artists, of cultural moments. Naturally, he likes to get close to the spirit of his themes by immersing himself in the cinema of the relevant period. "How else do you get inside the skin, the tissues of a certain era?" In I'm Not There, Haynes turns his attention to another artist whose identity is so changeful that he seems less a man than a multitude. As the title suggests, the film is about Dylan as invisible man; it is less a biopic than an idea of what a film about Dylan might resemble. Dylan is not so much played by, as represented by six actors, including Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, an 11-year-old African-American named Marcus Carl Franklin and Cate Blanchett, who brings an elfin androgyny to the tumultuous rocker.

Happy birthday, Todd Haynes!
I’m still waiting for his critically lauded experimental Bob Dylan biopic, I'm Not There , to open in my neck of the woods, but that isn’t stopping me from celebrating the birth of visionary gay director Todd Haynes today. From the eerie sterility of Safe to the gender-bending antics of the vastly underrated 70s glam-rock epic Velvet Goldmine , Haynes’ films are always overflowing with inventive ideas. Now how often can you say that about the crap that gets released these days? After the jump, check out a lengthy clip from one of my favorites, the gorgeously shot ode to Douglas Sirk-stye melodrama, Far From Heaven , as well as one of the wacky music videos from Velvet Goldmine Submitted by Adam Lubitow on Wed, 2008-01-02 16:39.

From Sundance: Todd Haynes moderates `Quinceanera' panel
Director Todd Haynes is moderating a panel about the film “Quinceanera” this morning at the Film Center on Main Street. The panelists includes writers, directors, producers, and actors from the film. (Haynes is also the film's executive producer.)
The plot summary from IMDB: “As Magdalena's 15th birthday approaches, her simple, blissful life is complicated by the discovery that she's pregnant. Kicked out of her house, she finds a new family with her great-granduncle and gay cousin.”
It sounds like the two co-writers/co-directors, Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer, put together the financing relatively easily. (They’d previously made “The Fluffer.”) Wash: “It felt like the low-budget version of being Quentin Tarantino, where you say, `I want to make a movie, and the money just appears.’” They say the budget is under a million. Haynes asks if it was under $500K, but they demur. They wrote the film in February 2005, and shot it in April.
The two had moved into a mostly Latino part of LA, Echo Park, and started making friends with their neighbors. They got invited to be the official photographers at a neighbor’s quinceanera (fifteenth birthday) party. That got them thinking about trying to capture the gentrification and culture clashes happening around them – and which they were part of.
