Expertise
I can answer questions about most cool season lawn care issues: fertilizing, watering, grass seed selection, weed identification and eradication, managing lawns in shade, recommend horticultural practices, improving soils, and organic approaches. I can especially give advice on the use and selection of fertilizers, suggest organic lawn care approaches and propose suitable lawn care calenders. My experience is with cool season lawns, so my knowledge of warm season areas is limited. My knowledge of pesticide use is very limited.

    Introduction
Hay bales take up a lot of space, and for this reason are often stored in a loft, or hay mow, above the main floor of a large barn. Hay can also be stored in numerous other places, provided it is protected from the weather, but regardless of where the bales are kept there is a preferred way to stack them.
    Instructions
    Difficulty: Moderately Easy
    Steps
    Step One
Determine that you are physically able to lift the bales. Putting up hay, as it is called, is hard physical labor. You will need to wear sturdy gloves and long pants. If you suffer from allergies, this is not the task for you. Hay bales are usually between three and four feet long and half as wide. They are bound by two wraps of either twine or wire. They can way upwards of fifty pounds (though most do not) depending on how high the tension was set on the baler. To move them you pick them up by the two wraps of twine or wire and fling or set them where you want.

Farm Grain and Hay Report Grain and Hay Report This report has been commissioned by Dairy Australia to provide an independent and timely assessment of grain and hay markets in each dairying region. It should be remembered that actual prices may vary for quality or other reasons The information in this report is collected and disseminated with due care and attention to its accuracy, but Dairy Australia accepts no liability if, for any reason, the information is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.
Report Date: 25th January 2008 NATIONAL BACKGROUND COMMENTS:
  • Dairy farmers should continue to consider their feed needs right through to next spring and up to November 2008, not just what their immediate needs are for Feb-March 2008. Securing supply will be important as grain pricing is expected to remain volatile in the first half of 2008 (till the next northern hemisphere crop is assured), and supplies in Australia will tighten as the year progresses. Make contact with feed/grain suppliers to discuss your needs now. The flooding in Central Queensland has slowed harvest and delivery of the early sorghum, causing sorghum to hold steady to firmer. Prices are expected to ease again once harvest gets under way and the southern Queensland crop gets into harvest in February.

Forages may be sampled as hay or standing pasture. Sampling methods include mechanical coring of bales with a hay probe, pulling hand-grab samples from bales or windrows, pulling hand-grab samples from the standing forage, and clipping standing forage samples. Subsequent analysis will determine feed value for livestock. Accuracy of analysis is largely dependent on sampling method and technique. Sampling Hay
There are several methods for sampling baled hay. The best technique is to use a mechanical coring probe made specifically for this purpose. The coring probe consists of a metal tube with a serrated end. The probe is about 18 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, and is attached to a mechanical drilling brace or cordless drill with a special adapter. A wooden plunger is included with probe.

@import url(../../../css/bfi_global.css); Home Film Television People ... Help Search Hay, Will (1888-1949) Actor A comic genius who created a genuinely original persona which worked variations on the tattered, shifty 'professional', whether teacher ( Boys Will Be Boys Good Morning, Boys! Ghost of St Michael's (1941)), barrister ( My Learned Friend (1943)), prison governor ( Convict 99 (1939)) or stationmaster ( Oh, Mr Porter! (1937), perhaps his masterpiece). In whatever circumstances, he was always required to deceive both superiors and inferiors, the latter proving sharper at detecting the radical incompetence beneath his seedy dignity. Accompanied by fat boy Graham Moffatt and toothless old codger Moore Marriott in half a dozen films for Gainsborough , directed usually by Frenchman Marcel Varnel or American William Beaudine , he created a comic oeuvre as endearing and enduring as any in British cinema. When he went to Ealing in 1941, he co-directed (with Basil Dearden ) as well as starring, and in another Ealing film, The Big Blockade (d. Charles Frend, 1942) he broke with his baffled inefficiency to play a straight role.

Born on 6 December, 1888, in Stockton-on-Tees in the north of England, William Thomson Hay went on to become one of Britain's most popular comedians, starring in a total of 19 films before his death in 1949. His radio performances for the BBC were among the most popular shows of the day and he was among the top ten moneymaking British stars of the era, having a comedic big-screen career that was only bettered in Britain by George Formby Hay started his career in the music halls. In 1914, he joined the Fred Karno troupe, famous for its comedy talent, which included Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin. He left the troupe in 1918, going on to tour Australia, the USA and South Africa. He specialised in playing the 'bumbling schoolmaster', and had huge success with his schoolmaster routines on stage and on the radio. His earliest radio appearances were made under the name of 'Charlie Kidd', as he did not want to risk the reputation he had built up around his stage career on the then new medium.

    Will Hay (1888-1949) b. Stockton-on-Tees, England.
Born in Stockton-on-Tees, William Thomson Hay became one of Britain's most popular comedians, having soon built up his seedy, scoundrelish, incompetent schoolmaster characterisation that found its way into other walks of life. Hay started out in music halls. In 1914, he joined the Fred Karno troupe for four years; touring in Australia, America and South Africa. His earliest radio appearances were made under the name of 'Charlie Kidd', as he did not want to risk the reputation he had built up around his stage career on the then new medium. His radio performances for the BBC were among the most popular shows of the day and he was among the top ten moneymaking British stars of the era. At the age of forty-six, and after 25 years in music halls and radio, Hay made his feature film debut in 1934 with Those Were the Days (1934). Hay went on to make 19 films in total including an enduring comic masterpiece of the British cinema:

MAKING EXCELLENT HAY WITH THE TIFTON HYBRID BERMUDAGRASSES
Glenn W. Burton For much of the South, the hybrid bermudagrasses top the list of forages that may be grown for hay. Properly managed, they are more dependable and produce more hay per acre at a lower cost per ton than any forage that I know. They contain more dry matter when cut (25 to 30%) and cure faster than other forages. The bermudagrasses are leafier than other grasses because of the unique arrangement of their leaves on their stems. The nodes or joints on grass stems produce only one leaf per node. The nodes on most grasses are equally spaced from one to several inches apart on a stem separated by sections of stem called internodes. Bermudagrass appears to have two opposite leaves from each node because it has a very short internode (about 1/16 inch) that alternates with the long internodes. This gives bermudagrass two leaves per unit of stem length whereas other grass species only have one. This helps explain why the bermudagrasses cut every four weeks contain over 75% of leaves. Also, the bermudagrasses cut for hay do not lose their leaves as legumes frequently do when tedding is required to cure rained-on hay. The Tifton bermudagrasses are more drought tolerant and can produce more hay in dry periods than other adapted hay plants. In a 3-year experiment with as little as 77% of average growing season rainfall, applying irrigation water to heavily fertilized Coastal bermudagrass (a Tifton hybrid) failed to increase annual forage yields.

    http://agnewsarchive.tamu.edu/drought/drghtpak98/drght19.html
Surviving in 1998 Nineteen-ninety eight is a disastrous year for Texas agriculture. Poor rainfall during the spring and summer of 1998 has resulted in almost no summer pasture grazing. There is very little hay available. Drought conditions have virtually stopped pasture and hay growth in many areas. There is little anyone can do to affect immediate forage production, but decision concerning future alternatives should be planned now. Producers are shaking their heads and trying to figure what to do. Negative factors such as extremely poor rainfall conditions, temperatures, and feed and fertilizer prices are uncontrollable. However, efficient utilization of fertilizer, harvest timing, grazing management, hay storage and feeding should be well managed for survival in 1998. Producers should concentrate on those practices they can control and consider alternatives. Money should be spent on practices that will likely return a profit. In hard times, it takes an efficient manager to break even or turn a profit. Producers need an overall management and merchandising plan for 1998. Such a plan would indicate when and how much fertilizer to apply and how the forage would be utilized. Without an overall plan, a producer has very little hope of breaking even in 1998. This paper will list management considerations necessary in surviving the pasture-livestock business in 1998.

    Managing Manure on Alfalfa Hay
    John A. Lory
Department of Agronomy and Commercial Agriculture Program Robert Kallenbach and Craig Roberts
Department of Agronomy Alfalfa is a high-quality, high-yielding, cool-season forage that can be profitably marketed as hay. Alfalfa is a desirable crop for manure applications because:
    • It requires high phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertility It removes a large amount of nitrogen (N) from the field when harvested as hay It has the ability to draw down nitrate levels within its root zone
Manure can be an excellent source of P, K and boron for alfalfa production and can reduce the need for purchasing other sources of these nutrients. Research in Wisconsin and Minnesota has shown manure can sometimes improve alfalfa yields when compared with other fertilizer sources. However, there are significant challenges in managing manure on alfalfa without damaging the productivity of the stand, particularly with solid manure and manure slurries.
