Jump to: navigation search Lorenz Hart (right) with Richard Rodgers (1936) Lorenz "Larry" Hart May 2 November 22 ) was the lyricist half of the famed Broadway songwriting team Rodgers and Hart . Some of his more famous lyrics include, " Blue Moon Isn't It Romantic? Mountain Greenery The Lady is a Tramp ... Falling in Love with Love " and " My Funny Valentine Hart was born in Harlem to Jewish immigrant parents. He attended Columbia University , where a friend introduced him to Richard Rodgers , and the two joined forces to write songs for a series of amateur and student productions. In 1919, the team's song "Any Old Place With You" was included in the Broadway musical comedy A Lonely Romeo . The smashing success of their score for the 1925 Theatre Guild production, The Garrick Gaieties , brought them great acclaim. They continued working together until Hart's death in 1943, along the way producing scores for a series of hit shows and making a substantial contribution to the Great American Songbook . Hart also translated plays for the Schubert brothers while continuing to collaborate with Rodgers. As a lyricist Hart was an advocate of inner rhyming and multisyllabic rhyming, and his lyrics have often been praised for their wit and technical sophistication.

U.S. lyricist. A descendant of Heinrich Heine , Hart initially worked as a translator of German. In 1918 he met Richard Rodgers , then age 16, at Columbia University. Their many Broadway hits would include The Garrick Gaieties A Connecticut Yankee The Boys from Syracuse (1938), and Pal Joey (1940). Their 25-year collaboration (often difficult because of Hart's alcoholism and aversion to deadlines) yielded nearly 1,000 songs, including "Blue Moon" (their only song not introduced on stage or film), "My Funny Valentine," "The Lady Is a Tramp," and "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered." Hart wurde als Sohn j¼discher Immigranten in New York geboren. Er hatte zwar ein gutes Verh¤ltnis zu seiner Mutter, doch eine eigent¼mliche Beziehung zu seinem Vater. Hart, Lorenz Milton (May 2, 1895 - Nov. 22, 1943), musical comedy lyricist, was born in New York City, the elder of two sons of Max M. and Frieda (Isenberg) Hart. Of Jewish background, he traced his descent through his mother from the German poet Heinrich Heine. His father, a business promoter, was sufficiently prosperous to enable Lorenz, after preparation at two private schools, to spend two years (1914-16) at the School of Journalism of Columbia University. Reared in a worldly, bibulous home, temperamentally alienated from a rather coarse-grained father, indifferent to academic studies outside literature and drama, Hart was perhaps even more than Cole Porter the expressive bard of the urban generation which matured during the interwar years 1919-41. Much of his work slick, breezy, and yet mordant, even morbid reflects their tart disillusion. A bachelor living with his widowed mother, whom he once described as a "sweet, menacing old lady," he was a restless world traveler and, especially after his mother's death, an alcoholic who disappeared for weeks on end to escape a life periodically unbearable. But with all his moody unreliability he found his destiny as lyricist to his more stable friend Richard Rodgers
Their lifetime collaboration began in 1918, when Hart was working for the

RICHARD RODGERS
LORENZ HART Lorenz Hart (later 'Larry' to everyone but his mother) was born in 1895 to an affluent German immigrant family in New York. He was unusually short in stature, which haunted his whole life, but by contrast super-energetic and intellectually dynamic. His talent for writing words to music was early evident and first put to serious use in teenage summer-camp shows. These shows were also Richard Rodgers' (born 1902 to a New York doctor's family) start in the theatre, but he did not meet Larry Hart until early 1919, when introduced by a mutual friend to collaborate on songs for an amateur club show. Rodgers, then only 16, was deeply impressed by Hart's seriousness and erudition in every aspect of lyric-writing: later he said "I was enchanted by this little man and his ideas. Neither of us mentioned it, but we evidently knew we would work together and I left Hart's house, having acquired in one afternoon a career, a partner, a best friend and a permanent source of irritation." Work soon started, striving for the all-important 'break': projects were developed, shows written and produced, but all without success until THE GARRICK GAIETIES, which opened at the Garrick Theatre on May 17th 1925 for a one-week run, but stayed for 200 performances! With its leading number 'Manhattan', it signalled a new star team on Broadway.

    Hart, Lorenz (1895-1943)
page: Barely five feet tall, balding early, and possessing a disproportionately large head, Larry Hart was the first to disparage his own attractiveness. His jokes, however, masked a deeply-rooted inability to accept the possibility of romantic happiness or sexual gratification. Hart impulsively proposed marriage to several women friends, none of whom thought his offer serious. And when he allowed himself to act upon his desire for other men, he seems to have had difficulty performing sexually. (Biographer Frederick Nolan quotes one unidentified male partner's shock at discovering Hart cowering in the bedroom closet after sex, suggesting that the songwriter was unable actively to pursue homosexual pleasure without being overcome by guilt.)
