A Tribute to Jean Harlow
Jean Harlow was the first "blonde bombshell." In fact, the phrase was coined for her. But she was much more than just a platinum-haired sex symbol, and because she died so young (of kidney failure at the age of 26, the result of a childhood illness), we will never know what kind of actress, or person, she might have become. Harlow made three dozen films between 1927 and 1937, though she had only small parts in many of them. She appeared in color only once, during a short sequence in 1930's

I'm sure most bachelors have heard the line, "Excuse me while I slip into something more comfortable." Not many people realize that phrase was first uttered on-screen by this week's femme fatale Jean Harlow in the Howard Hughes production "Hells Angels" (1930). In the 1920's and 30's, platinum blonde Harlow laid the groundwork for many of the glamour era's most popular blonde bombshells: Marilyn Monroe Jayne Mansfield Mamie Van Doren , etc... Harlow knew how to exploit her own sexuality and how to turn that exploitation into a publicity machine for her career. (Case in point: a series of nude photos of her was commonly distributed throughout Hollywood.) The other important thing about Harlow was that she used humor rather than raw sex appeal to endear herself to movie audiences. (This is a good foreshadowing of humor used to fight the battle of the sexes in 40's and 50's men's magazines.) Unfortunately, Harlow's personal life was filled with tragedy and scandalmost importantly the 1932 suicide of her husband Paul Bern Harlow died in 1937 at age 26, well before the her true potential as a superstar could be reached.

Publicity Shots Movie Stills Forest Lawn ... Vintage Collectibles Jean Harlow... the original "Platinum Blonde", and one of the sexiest film stars of the golden age of movies. She died at age 26, with her true potential as a fast-talking comedienne just beginning to be realized. But who was she, really? Harlean Harlow Carpenter was born on March 3, 1911, the only child of a Kansas City dentist and his young wife, Jean Poe Harlow Carpenter. Her parents divorced when she was 10 years old, and Jean tried to prevent (with some success) any further contact between Harlean and her father, Mont Clair Carpenter. They did manage to keep in touch, unknown to Harlean's later biographers. As she began her acting career, prompted and always managed, if not actually controlled, by her mother, Harlean was known by her mother's maiden name. In her childhood, she was a pampered, forthright tomboy. She never developed the snobbishness that might be expected, but became an extremely hard worker and a kind and caring person who was as considerate of the film crews as she was of any producer or costar. She inspired the deep affection and respect of nearly everyone with whom she came in contact, and her untimely death grieved thousands. This site is a tribute to the undying love between father and daughter. It is intended to provide a glimpse into the little-known Carpenter side of Harlean Carpenter / Jean Harlow's life and background, as well as some information on her career. The Carpenter family images here have been reproduced from the family's private collection, and have never before been made public. Other images are from the collection of Lisa Burks, who generously chose to give many pictures and other memorabilia to members of the family.
