Neil Hannon is frequently compared to Jarvis Cocker, and there is no denying that he shares a certain British quirky wit with the Tall Dark One, but he's not like Jarvis, he doesn't draw from the seamy side of working-class life. Oh no, not he. His is a magpie's nest of ersatz references plundered from art, cinema, literature, and music. He has never had a proper job. After mediocre performance at school he was accepted to do an Art Foundation course at Liverpool Polytechnic. He decided to take a year out to try his hand at music and never returned to the real world. In 1989 he formed The Divine Comedy. In 1991 he was signed by Keith Cullen's Setanta label, and in 1992 his fellow members couldn't sustain the poverty and disappointment of their unsuccessful life and deserted him. Cullen's patronage gave him the security to keep plugging on. Unperturbed by this abandonment, Neil seized this opportunity and reinvented The Divine Comedy. Gone was the REM-style indie-guitar-infested music. He took some songs he already had, and with a collection of musicians, followed his instinct and set about developing his own musical style.

I bought the album Casanova and loved the clever arrangements and dry funny lyrics but my favourite song from it was the version of the Father Ted theme tune 'Songs Of Love'. I was working with C4's Adam And Joe at the time and persuaded them to film Neil Hannon at his flat in Battersea for the Vinyl Justice Police section of the show - its quite a long time now but I seem to remember that they weren't massive fans but quite frankly in those early days before anyone knew who A and J were, we didn't have a huge list of popstars dying to have their record collections perused. Anyway I recollect that Neil was slightly nervous and shy, but lovely and charming and I've always looked out for him and Divine Comedy ever since. I'm posting a recording by Neil Hannon that was a demo but, I think, was never properly recorded, I'm not entirely sure why because its such a great song and anyone I've played it to usually loves it. Shamefully it is now my ringtone, well when it isn't Cat Power's version of Blondie's 'Hanging On The Telephone. The song was, I believe, co-written by Eg once of Eg and Alice but was more recently responsible for Will Young's 'Leave Right Now' and James Morrison's 'You Give Me Something'.
