“I think one should mention Griffith in every discussion about the cinema: everyone agrees, but everyone forgets, nonetheless.” - Jean-Luc Godard What better time to remember and experience some of the films of this brilliant practitioner of early cinema than at the beginning of a new school year? If you’re looking for inspiration, you can’t do much better than D.W. Griffith. David Wark Griffith was born in La Grange, Kentucky on January 22, 1875 and started working as an actor for the Biograph film company in 1908 for $5 a day. Griffith was given his first directing job at Biograph, which is where he met cameraman G.W. “Billy” Bitzer, with whom he began a sixteen-year association, “one of the most remarkable partnerships in the history of cinema.” ( The Film Encyclopedia, Ephraim Katz) By the time Griffith left Biograph in 1913 he had directed some 450 short films. From there he would go on to direct several of the most important feature films in the history of cinema. “But quantity alone did not make Griffith’s early film career so extraordinary. From the very start, he showed a remarkable instinctive understanding of the creative potential of the medium using inherently cinematic techniques—changing camera angles, intercutting, crosscutting, parallel action, camera movement, dramatic lighting, the close-up, the full shot, rhythmic editing, etc. He wasn’t the first to employ these techniques, which had been discovered and used before him. But he was the first to use them consciously and creatively, taking the linguistic components of film and molding them into a syntax, thus giving cinema an articulate language all its own. His innovative achievements in liberating the cinema from the restrictive traditions of the stage are all the more remarkable considering the theatrical roots of his background.” (

Welcome to June. Since June is the month in which we pay tribute to dad, I thought I would do my first essay of the month about the man known as "the father of motion picture". Also known as "the father of film technique," "the man who invented Hollywood," and "the Shakespeare of the screen," D. W. (David Wark) Griffith made over 450 films in his long career-the most famous of which is The Birth of a Nation Born in Kentucky, in 1875, Griffith started out wanting to be a playwright. He moved to New York but quickly turned from writing and acting in the theater to directing motion pictures. As the movie industry moved West, so did Griffith. Griffith's contribution to film is enormous. He managed to bring the industry from flat, single-plot stories to rounded, intricate, narrative stories. Griffith introduced the idea of two stories going on at the same time and perfected the use of flashbacks and cross cutting to tell the dual plot lines. He is responsible for bringing us the film industry and film making techniques that we have today.

(Full name David Wark Griffith) American filmmaker.
    INTRODUCTION
As the first filmmaker to exploit the potential of film editing to convey the impression of simultaneous action, and for his promotion of a style of acting and innovative uses of the camera that suited the representation of character psychology, Griffith is generally acknowledged by scholars and critics as the most influential figure in film history. Exemplified in his epic silent movies The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916), his techniques were copied and refined by the majority of filmmakers in the United States and Europe, and were closely studied by Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and other directors in pre- and post-revolutionary Russia. Most critics note, however, that as a storyteller Griffith was prone to bombastic thematic pretension, sentimentality, and was capable of only pedestrian insight. Moreover, The Birth of a Nation

D.W. Griffith Anyone who takes a film appreciation class or attends film school will encounter D.W. Griffith and learn of his pioneering efforts in American cinema. For a general introduction seek Iris Barry's pamphlet "D.S. Griffith." It hits the high points, creating a valuable outline of the master filmmaker and his career. Some academic studies of Griffith are pretentious ponderings by doctoral students patently unsuitable for human consumption. But Barry's treatise is well-presented and readable resource about the innovative filmmaker.

D.W. Griffith and film itself weren't always elevated. Most are aware of the detestable racism illustrated in The Birth of a Nation , but the medium itself wasn't always well regarded critically either. Early films were considered little more than entertaining gimmicks and novelties, and in the 1890's films ranked alongside flea circuses as entertaining segments in variety shows. Although the groundwork was laid for future cinematic storytelling by Edison studio's Edwin S. Porter in The Life of an American Fireman and The Great Train Robbery , Griffith brilliantly stretched the film canvas far beyond these "baby steps."

    Movies Editor, High Plains Reader
(This article is slightly updated from its original form, which was published in two parts December 23, 1999 and January 6, 2000) The Birth of An Art Form
In spite of Hollywood's consistent perpetuation and encouragement of stereotypesethnic, racial, religious, and otherwisethe Associated Press has reported that The Directors Guild of America is dumping its prestigious D.W. Griffith Award to dramatize the disapproval of the racial stereotypes its members perceive in the pioneer filmmaker's movies. ``As we approach a new millennium," DGA President Jack Shea said in a highly ironic statement in December 1999, "the time is right to create a new ultimate honor for film directors that better reflects the sensibilities of our society at this time in our national history.'' The DGA national board voted unanimously to retire the Griffith Award and create a new career achievement award. The name of the new award will be announced later. It is evident from this decision and the wording of the official statement, that today's active directors have never seen a representative sampling of Griffith's films and are not at all familiar with the director's career, accomplishments, or legacy that in effect created their own profession. Their action appears to be based solely upon reaction to Griffith's best-known film

    Biograph 1908-1913
    • "A film director had to provide the film with continuity. . . telling a story without confusing the audience." "His working-class people and members of racial minorities were from the beginning endowed with a humanity that set them apart from the stock cariacatures. Often minority figures were the heroes of his films, exhibiting moral strength superior to their white antagonists." "Gradually, he increased the complexity and variety of movements within his frame, so that the hallmark of Griffith films became the rich texture and detail of his settings and his direction of acting . . . mise en scene." "He gave more detailed attention to natural and artificial lighting, using side lighting for the effect of firelight, backlighting with reflectors to soften facial features, changing light within a shot, using fades and focused lighting on individuals. By 1912, he had become a master of the effects of chiarosuro of light and dark shading, in a motion-picture frame."
Judith of Bethulia feature film 1913
    • "Griffith saw the opportunity to try new ways of cutting and assembling separate shots - to try, indeed, a new way of conceiving the space and time of the succession of moving images. . . Montage meant the building up of impressions through the juxtaposition of separate shots, in order to create a single, complete mental image or emotional state."
