How The Confederacy Revived The KKK and Created Hollywood
by Mark Calney
Printed in The American Almanac , January 11, 1993.
End of Page The Confederacy Site Map Overview Page In the context of the campaign to tear down the statue of Ku Klux Klan founder and Confederate General Albert Pike in Washington, D.C., and the need to remove, as well, the successors of the Confederacy from control of the U.S. government, this report is being issued to address two related topics: (1) the revival of the Ku Klux Klan as a mass-based, fascist movement in the United States in the twentieth century, and (2) the birth modern culture's "Rosemary's Baby": Hollywood. The mediator for these two phenomena was D.W. Griffith's 1915 motion picture The Birth of a Nation originally titled The Clansman a film which presented a re-writing of the actual history of post Civil War Reconstruction by the same Confederate traitors aginst whom the war had to be fought. It portrayed African-Americans in the post-Civil War South as depraved, lascivious beasts whose rampant lawlessness and alleged domination of the South through military force and control of the state legislatures threatened to destroy "Southern civilization" and "mongrelize the races". The film asserts that this could only be stopped by the glorified lynchings and reign of terror carried out by the "honorable" new, secret order of the "chivalrous" Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

Filmmaker biographies: David Wark Griffith - pioneer movie director
Reluctant actor David Wark Griffith accepted a job directing movies at Biograph in 1908. Then he turned films into an art form.
July 22, 1948. The Hollywood Knickerbocker Hotel. A tall, gaunt man with an enormous hooked nose is stricken with a massive cerebral hemorrhage. In spite of blinding pain, he staggers out of his room and down the stairs. Then he collapses in the middle of the lobby. He is rushed to Temple Hospital. But it is too late for David Wark Griffith. After spending the night in a coma, he dies early the next morning alone. Five days later, funeral services are held at the Masonic Lodge in Hollywood. Among the mourners are friends and colleagues from the days when the movies were young and Griffith was the undisputed king of the cinema. One of these, actor Donald Crisp, delivers a fitting eulogy: “I cannot help feeling that there should always have been a place for him and his talent in the motion picture field. It is hard to believe that the industry could not have found a use for his great gift.” Indeed. Kentucky-born D.W. Griffith was virtually forgotten by the industry he helped build. It was Griffith who had saved the ailing Biograph Studios from bankruptcy and, through his incredible talent, had made it a leader in the fledgling movie industry. And it was Griffith who turned filmmaking to an art.

Name at birth: David Wark Griffith D.W. Griffith was an American filmmaker who is considered by many to be the most influential figure in the history of cinema. He began his career as a stage actor and writer in the first part of the 20th century. He took his stories to the early movie studios, landing at the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company in 1908. Until 1913 Griffith oversaw the production of almost all of Biograph's movies, more than 450 films. He joined Reliance-Majestic's studios, taking most of his regular actors and technicians, including his best cameraman, G.W. "Billy" Blitzer. The quality of Griffith's productions was generally considered superior to his contemporaries, and his projects became more ambitious than the standard one-reel films. His three-hour feature The Birth of a Nation (1915) was a stunning success and is considered the most important film in the development of cinema as an art. Its racism the protagonists are members of the Ku Klux Klan keeps it from being enjoyed as a cinematic experience, but as an item of historical interest it includes all of Griffith's innovations in the language of cinema: cross-cutting, close-ups, parallel narratives, camera movement and more restrained acting. His next film
