skip to main skip to sidebar this isn't grey's anatomy Friday, January 25, 2008 update I'm sorry for the long blogging hiatus. I'm going to be making a big change regarding what I'm doing here in HaitiI'll blog more about that later when I have time. For now, I'm focusing on helping the Livesays with their youngest daughter Lydia, who's in the hospital in Port with bacterial meningitis. You can read more about it on their blog, which is linked above. Please pray for Lydia and their whole family if you think of it. Thanks everyone! I think I like it so much because after 3+ months, I feel very comfortable working thereI know what to do in most situations ( most ...not all), I know which medications are (usually) available, I know all the sisters who work there, and so on. The work is so different from any work I ever did in the U.S.mostly because I often do everything for a child, from start to finish. It's very hands-on work. For example, I frequently see children who have both pneumonia and an asthma exacerbations at the same time. Some of these children need breathing treatments, and if this is the case, I'll give the breathing treatments and also the first dose of oral medications myself (usually steroids, tylenol and an antibiotic). Then if I'm worried about the child, I might decide to give an injection of a long-acting antibiotic, in which case I'll find the vial of powdered medicine, mix the med with sterile water, draw up the correct amount of medicine, and give the injection myself. If the child needs an IV, I'll most likely put in the IV. I | |
