Many of his films I own, have rented, seen on the big screen or stayed up late to watch on television. He was a remarkable physical comedian blessed with the timing and grace of an acrobat, the profession in which his career as an entertainer began. Cary Grant was also the personification of the suave, debonair sophisticate. His willingness to take a pratfall or participate in ridiculous situations always kept him human, and therefore sympathetic. So it was with great pleasure that I accepted the task of reviewing the new, Lionsgate Four- Disc Cary Grant Collector’s Set The four films included in this collection were made between 1958 and 1962, the final years of Grant’s acting career. They are not particularly memorable films, and they likely won't be the cornerstone of one's Cary Grant library. However, if you already own a collection of his great earlier films The Awful Truth Bringing Up Baby Only Angels Have Wings His Girl Friday or The Philadelphia Story , for some examples this collection might be considered as a good addition. Although, for my money, the films to own from the later years of his career are 1955’s

Grant, Cary
British-born American actor who was the epitome of the elegant leading man in films such as The Philadelphia Story (1940) and North by Northwest (1959). Grant, Cary Grant, Cary (1904-1986), British-born American motion-picture actor, known for his urbane and debonair manner. He was born Alexander Archibald Leach in Bristol, England. In 1932 he went to Hollywood, California, where he appeared in a long series of romantic and sophisticated comedy motion pictures that established his reputation as one of Hollywood's leading men. One of his well-known films is The Philadelphia Story (1940), with Katharine Hepburn.
Director Alfred Hitchcock starred Grant in several films, including North by Northwest (1959), considered by many to be their greatest collaboration. Grant also worked repeatedly with director Howard Hawks, for whom he made such films as Bringing Up Baby (1938) and Monkey Business (1952).
Cary Grant was once told, "Every time I see you on the screen, I think, 'I wish I was Cary Grant.'" He replied, "That's just what I think!" I've been repeating that story ever since I first heard it, and it never fails to amuse audiences, all of whom seem to understand it

Cary Grant
in Relationships
He is not easily moved by emotional displays and can be curiously detached from his own emotions and those of others. It is almost as if he could turn his feelings on and off at will; Cary should be careful not to leave the switch "off" too often, for he could easily become too impersonal. Family relationships and attachments are not as important to him as they are to most people and Grant often considers his friends closer to him than his blood relatives. Certainly, Grant's sympathy and concern extends much beyond his immediate family. In his personal relationships, Cary Grant insists upon a certain amount of independence and the freedom to pursue friendships with as many people, of both sexes, as he chooses. Cary does not appreciate a jealous, possessive partner. Cary Grant feels comfortable in an atmosphere that is open and experimental, and he has little taste for convention and tradition.

Opening Statement
The Cary Grant Box Set gathers five films that feature the suavest actor that ever graced the silver screen: Holiday , which has never seen a release in the United States, Only Angels Have Wings The Talk of the Town His Girl Friday , and The Awful Truth . It's a handsome box fit for the one man everybody wanted to be, including the actor himself. Still, it seems a little greedy to release a box set with only one new film added to a mix of movies that have already been in the stores. So is it worth it?

Reviewed by Monika Bartyzel Simply called “Cary Grant,” this 4-disc collector’s set should be called Cary Grant’s Tales of Romantic Dysfunction . Included in the collection are some of the last films the actor appeared in, before retiring in 1966 – Indiscreet Operation Petticoat The Grass is Greener (1960), and That Touch of Mink (1962). Each deals with the throes of romance and marriage, and could very well be an example of art imitating life. See, each was filmed by Grant’s own film companies, and while he was an irresistible leading man on-screen, Grant was known for his romantic troubles off-screen and his third marriage happened to dissolve the same year that Mink was released.

From the
Cary Grant Website ... Chapter 14 Here are his thoughts on LSD: Without the ability to fully love or be fully loved, so many of us think that the acquisition of money can bring self-esteem and happiness. I’ve enjoyed friendship with some exceedingly wealthy people. If money brought happiness, then each of them should be ecstatically happy. But I doubt whether any of them is any happier than any of my less well-to-do friends. Money, it seems, attracts more envy than empathy. More lust than love. In 1932 the practice of psychiatry was little known or respected. The public seemed to regard it, just as I probably did, with skepticism. For years I absurdly treated subjects with which I was unfamiliar, or sports in which I was not proficient, or books which I should have read but didn’t, with disdain. But by 1956, lacking the foundation of early spiritual training and suspecting that there was more happiness available than I seemed able to grasp, I had grown much more tolerant of, and receptive to, the knowledge of others. Other searchers, other sharers. Humanitarians in all fields of endeavor. At the age of 53, after three unsuccessful marriages, either something was wrong with me or, obviously, with the whole sociological and moralistic concepts of our civilization. LSD 25 is a psychic energizer and the exact opposite in reaction to the addictive drugs and opiates. Indeed, Seconal, or similar sedative, is usually given as an antidote, to quell and offset the effects of LSD 25, if necessary. The action of the chemical releases the subconscious so that it becomes apparent to yourself. So that you can see what transpires in the depth of you mind — and what goes on there you wouldn’t believe, ladies and gentlemen — and learn which misconceptions, guilts and fears, with their resultant repressions, inhibitions and insecurities, have formed the pattern for your past behavior. A successively recurring pattern since childhood.

Empire once described his screen persona as "a combination of Jack Buchanan, Noel Coward and Rex Harrison. I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be, and, finally, I became that person. Or he became me." In fact, in the process of constructing his cool, sophisticated movie star persona, Grant became not only the illusory presence he would have liked to be but the perfect, debonair Hollywood star. Cary Grant Menu Home Biography Films Posters ... Email Cary Grant was born Archibald Alexander Leach on January 18, 1904, in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, to Elias J. Leach, a clothes presser, and Elsie (née) Kingdom. Grant grew up in a lower middle-class environment under depressing circumstances. As the only surviving son of his parents, he was the focus of much criticism, and his mother continuously grieved for her firstborn son, who had died in 1899. His father was an alcoholic who had numerous affairs with other women; with Mabel Bass he had a son, Eric Leslie Leach. Grant was never told about the existence of his half brother, nor was he told the truth when (around 1914) his mother was committed to a mental health sanitarium (he did not see her again until his late 20s). Grant’s education included the Bishop Road boys’ school in Bristol, and he received a scholarship in 1915 to attend the Fairfield secondary school in Somerset. Grant moved to New York again in 1927, where he appeared on Broadway in numerous musicals and plays while trying to break into films. Paramount Studios finally gave him a chance, although his screen debut, Singapore Sue (1931) , was uncredited. In 1932, newly christened by the studio as Cary Grant, he made his feature debut in This is the Night, followed by a string of mediocre films. He teamed up with Mae West, at her request, for the seductive comedy

Archie Leach day: Cary Grant's streetcar
Cary Grant and Peter Bogdonavich were very good friends, despite the age difference, and also their wildly different ways of handling celebrity status. Cary Grant kept as low a profile as he possibly could, and did his best to avoid scandal and bad publicity. He kept his personal life as hidden as he was able, although inevitably people were interested in his marriages, divorces, etc. But he never willingly opened up his personal life to the tabloids. Peter Bogdonavich, while certainly an incredible director, kind of went off the deep end with the personal publicity- and he courted it (during his romance to Cybill Shepherd). Shepherd broke up his marriage (to his long-time creative partner - many people credited much of his success to her - so it wasn't just an anonymous wife he dumped. She was a part of the industry, people knew her, respected her, worked with her ... Bogdonavich made a lot of enemies when he dumped her). So Cybill Shepherd (barely out of her teenage years) had an aura of "the other woman" around her through the whole thing, and scandal swirled about the pair, and there they were - out at every party, at every awards show, grinning, and gushing, and laughing at the camera. Cary Grant, with his sense of propriety, etc., thought it was unseemly. While Bogdonavich and Shepherd were doing the talk-show circuit, and flaunting their happiness, Cary Grant pulled Bogdonavich aside and said something like: "Peter, nobody cares that you are happy. Stop telling everyone how in love you are and how happy you are. It will make people hate you, because in general, people are NOT in love and people are NOT happy." And very soon, that publicity onslaught crashed, and inverted, and Bogdonavich sunk down into a morass of his own making, when the circumstances of his life went catastrophically bad. (The whole Dorothy Stratten thing. Awful.)

1-MINUTE RESUME FOR CARY GRANT
The very personification of the debonair and charismatic leading man, Grant spent the first 14 years of his life in England before joining Bob Pender's traveling comedy troupe where he learned acrobatics and pantomime. After a successful Broadway run with the troupe, he stayed in the States and continued with light stage comedies before heading to Hollywood in 1931. Renamed Cary Grant early in his career while under contract at Paramount, he was one of the first actors to shun studio contracts in favor of directing his own career. A true Hollywood screen legend, Grant is best known for his performances in screwball comedies like Bringing Up Baby His Girl Friday Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) and the Hitchcock classics Suspicion Notorious To Catch a Thief (1955) and North by Northwest
