Cary Grant was born as Archibald Alexander Leach in Horfield, Bristol, England, in 1904. The irony is that the man who taught the elite how a modern gentleman should behave was of working-class origin. His father, Elias, was a tailor's presser by trade, working in a clothing factory, a good-looking man and "at his happiest at the centre of light-hearted social occasions". He had a reputation as a womanizer. Archie's mother, Elsie, was "a short, slight woman with olive skin... and a slightly cleft chin; she came from a large family of brewery labourers, laundresses and ships' carpenters."
They had married in 1898. Four years before Achie Leach was born, their first child had died two days before his first birthday. The loss left Archie's mother, then 22, "seriously depressed and withdrawn". The family doctor advised them to have another child. They did so and Archie was to be their only child.
Because of Archie's circumcision there were unfounded rumors invented by the biographers Higham and Moseley that his "real" mother was a mysterious Jewish woman called "Lillian". There is no documented evidence for that. And there are no Jewish ancestors in either Archie's father's or mother's family tree.

Cary Grant
The wonderful and gorgeous Cary Grant is my favourite actor - just ask any of my friends and work colleagues. They tend to tremble and shake and bring out the sharp knives whenever I mention his illustrious name. Anyway, who can blame me for my obsession.
Sorry about the poor quality of the middle photo. It's actually scanned in from a 1940's magazine. I have recently discovered a little treasure trove of ancient magazines and dusty books (hi Arthur!) and can usually be seen on a Saturday, up to my ears in tales of Hollywood in the 30s and 40s, looking for Cary references no matter how small. I will be updating this page to include some Cary gems from some of these magazines some time in the next millenium!
My favourite Cary Grant films are:
The Bishop's Wife - every time I watch it I start crying just that bit earlier because I know what's coming up. I'm now at the stage where I cry as the opening credits roll. Soon I'll be crying as I get the video out of its box. Oh well....
Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House - I'd just like to say a special thank you to those lovely people at 4Front Video for rereleasing loads of Cary Films recently. I was able to go out and get this one which I hadn't seen for years.

Cary Grant: That Touch of Class By Dina-Marie Kulzer "Everyone grows olderexcept Cary Grant," Grace Kelly once observed. The sun-bronzed actor with the big, brown eyes, cleft chin, and that unique accent all his own has thrilled generations of moviegoers, not just with his sensational looks but with his brilliant, comedic timing. Grant, in his heyday, was the only actor who could make his leading lady laugh while at the same time sweeping her off her feet. The name of Cary Grant on a theater marquee promised audiences the best entertainment and has always delivered it. Grant's films have a timeless appeal and continue to captivate audiences more than half a century after their original release. Grant was born Archibald Leach, the son of Elias and Elsie Leach, 1904, in Bristol, England. At the age of 13, Archie ran away from home to join Bob Pender's acrobatic troupe. Archie's father caught up with him and made sure his son returned home. Two years later Archie ran away againthis time his father allowed him to stay. In 1920 the Pender troupe arrived in the United States. Archie graduated from stilt walking and clown routines, to Vaudeville, Broadway and then Hollywood.
Archie made his first full length feature film This Is the Night in 1932 using a new name-Cary Grant. Years later Grant shared the story of how he received his name with Roderick Mann: "When I arrived in Hollywood the studio said, 'Archie just doesn't sound right in America.' I said "It doesn't sound particularly right in Britain either. And then I told them the worst part my middle name is Alexandria. It was meant to be Alexander, but they made a mistake on my birth certificate."

    Cary Grant on LSD:
Film star Cary Grant talks about his experiences with LSD in an excerpt from his autobiography. Grant was one of the few people who were medically treated with LSD-assisted psychotherapy when it was still legal in 1960s America, and he claimed he benefited greatly from it. The feeling is that of an unmarshaling of the thoughts as you’ve customarily associated them. The lessening of conscious control, similar to the mental process which takes place when we dream. For example, when you’re asleep and your mind no longer concerned with matters and activities of the day, your subconscious often brings itself to your attention by dreaming. With conscious controls relaxed, those thoughts buried deep inside begin to come to the surface in the form of dreams. These dreams, since they appear to us in symbolic guise, are fantasies and, if you will accept the reasoning, could be classified as hallucinations. Such fantasies, or hallucinations, are inside every one of us, waiting to be released, aired and understood. Dreams are really the emotions that we find ourselves reluctant to examine, think about, or meditate upon, while conscious. Under the effect of LSD 25, these dreams or hallucinations, if you wish, are speeded up, and interpreted, when properly conducted ba a psychiatrically orientated doctor who sits quietly by, awaiting whatever communication one cares to make — the revealing of a hidden memory seen again from an older, more mature viewpoint, or the dawning of new enlightenment. Then, if the doctor is as skilled as mine was, he carefully proffers a word or key, that can lead to the next release, the next step toward fuller understanding.

    Cary Grant's Thoughts on LSD
From the Cary Grant Website Chapter 14 Here are his thoughts on LSD: Without the ability to fully love or be fully loved, so many of us think that the acquisition of money can bring self-esteem and happiness. I’ve enjoyed friendship with some exceedingly wealthy people. If money brought happiness, then each of them should be ecstatically happy. But I doubt whether any of them is any happier than any of my less well-to-do friends. Money, it seems, attracts more envy than empathy. More lust than love. In 1932 the practice of psychiatry was little known or respected. The public seemed to regard it, just as I probably did, with skepticism. For years I absurdly treated subjects with which I was unfamiliar, or sports in which I was not proficient, or books which I should have read but didn’t, with disdain. But by 1956, lacking the foundation of early spiritual training and suspecting that there was more happiness available than I seemed able to grasp, I had grown much more tolerant of, and receptive to, the knowledge of others. Other searchers, other sharers. Humanitarians in all fields of endeavor. At the age of 53, after three unsuccessful marriages, either something was wrong with me or, obviously, with the whole sociological and moralistic concepts of our civilization. LSD 25 is a psychic energizer and the exact opposite in reaction to the addictive drugs and opiates. Indeed, Seconal, or similar sedative, is usually given as an antidote, to quell and offset the effects of LSD 25, if necessary. The action of the chemical releases the subconscious so that it becomes apparent to yourself. So that you can see what transpires in the depth of you mind — and what goes on there you wouldn’t believe, ladies and gentlemen — and learn which misconceptions, guilts and fears, with their resultant repressions, inhibitions and insecurities, have formed the pattern for your past behavior. A successively recurring pattern since childhood.

North By Northwest Reflects and Protects But, as Thoreau wrote, 'A man who has at length found something to do will not need to get a new suit to do it in.' Cary may cut quite a figure but as a person he is meaningless, so far. We find him in the Suit, but certainly he has not found himself, or 'what to do'. The recent idiom of calling a guy a 'suit' if you don't like him, consider him a flunky or a waste of space, applies to Cary at the beginning of the film: this suit movies , perhaps the whole world. The villains, James Mason and Martin Landau, wear suits of funereal, sinister (though sleek and pricey) black, while their greasy henchmen run around in off-the-peg browny crap. 'The Professor', head of Intelligence, bumbles about in pipe-smoked tweed and a revolting shirt of old-man blue. In 1959, the year North By Northwest was released, America was a white-shirt-and-black-suit nation: the 'revolution', if you want to dignify it that way, was ten years off. There's a nice photograph of Ernest Lehman, who wrote this picture, sitting in Hitchcock's office, a typically late Fifties black-and-white office, natty in a white shirt and narrow black tie. Some could make this look good but if you were
