2. Images - The Glory Of Cary Grant
Cary Grant s glamour is directly tied to his objectified beauty, whether it is situationally supported by power or not.
http://www.imagesjournal.com/issue05/features/carygrant.htm
by Elizabeth Abele page 1 of 6 R ecently Entertainment Weekly published a special issue"The 100 Greatest Movie Stars of All Times." Star number 6 was described as follows: If Hollywood had its own Mount Rushmore, Cary Grant's profile would be the most prominent: the hair that Katharine Hepburn mussed in Bringing Up Baby (1938), the eyes that Eva Marie Saint couldn't quite meet in North by Northwest (1959), the lips that locked so breathtakingly with Ingrid Bergman's in Notorious (1946), and, of course, the cleft chin that fascinated Audrey Hepburn in Charade On reading this entry, I was struck at how it contradicted Laura Mulvey's seminal work, "Visual Pleasure in Narrative Cinema," which characterizes the gaze of the camera, and the spectator, as always male and the object of the gaze as always female. Though these looks at Grant described above are all attributed to an on-screen female, it is obvious from the description that the gaze of the shots described forces male and female spectators to look at Grant as an object of desire. Because no other entry in this Entertainment Weekly issue presents such a detailed objectified description of an actor's (or even actress') appearance (the entries on Brando, Redford, Cruise and Gibson acknowledge their looks, but quickly move on to discuss their other qualities), it reinforced my own personal feeling that there might be something special about looking at Mr. Grant.

Grant's feature debut was in This Is the Night (1932). He soon found himself playing colorless characters opposite such top Paramount female stars as Nancy Carroll, Sylvia Sidney, Marlene Dietrich and Mae West (though he said he learned more about acting and comic timing from her than anyone else he ever worked with). It was on a studio loan-out to RKO in 1935, when Grant appeared with Katharine Hepburn in Sylvia Scarlett, that he began to find his form and spark, playing a Cockney entertainer in a traveling troupe, a role for which he could draw on his experiences with the Pender company. When his Paramount contract expired in 1937, Grant bolted, choosing not to sign with another studio. Instead, he selected his own films, scripts and directors. Once he left Paramount, Grant put his personal stamp on the screwball comedy genre. As sophisticated as his characters seemed, they were never above a pratfall, setting Grant apart from other leading men of the time and making him the perfect foil for the comic hijinks initiated by screwball comedy's wacky heroines. Grant and his female costars operated on the same plane, neither quite gaining the upper hand; he converted screwball comedy into a two-character, upper-class, adult slapstick parlor game.

A Tribute to Cary Grant
Cary Grant finished first in our AFI straw poll balloting for Greatest Actor of the first half of this century, ahead of Jimmy Stewart and Humphrey Bogart (who won the real AFI balloting, with Cary second). That's quite an achievement, given Jimmy's and Bogie's undisputed status as icons of film, not to mention of American life. But Cary had one thing that Jimmy and Bogie really didn't, at least according to the women I've spoken with. He was really sexy.

Tarot Card
(Equivalent of "1/18/1904") The Hierophant
: Faith in tradition and the old school. A justified and ancient source of power. Being supportive, sympathetic and loyal. Receiving instructions, learning, guidance or inspiration. The ability to hear a higher or inner voice. May also indicate a religious ritual, such as a marriage or an initiation.
Rune
(Equivalent of "Archibald Alexander Leach") Eoh
refers to the Yew tree. The Yew does not go dormant and therefore represents endurance. Even the wood of the tree is strong, resilient, and pliable - the Yew bends, but does not break. The evergreen nature of the Yew is present even in the rune itself, as it cannot be changed even by reversal. This rune is historically symbolic of death, but, as in the Tarot and as suggested by the nature of the Yew tree itself, death is seen only as a transmutation of something eternal and unchanging - the spirit. Many men must have wanted to be Clark Gable and look straight at a woman with a faint smirk and lifted, questioning eyebrows. What man doesn'tat some levelwant to feel supremely confident and earthy and irresistible? But a few steps up the dreamy social ladder there's the more subtle fantasy of worldly graceof being so gallant and gentlemanly and charming that every woman longs to be your date. And at that deluxe level men want to be Cary Grant. Men as far apart as John F. Kennedy and Lucky Luciano thought that he should star in their life story. Who but Cary Grant could be a fantasy self-image for a President and a gangster chief? Who else could demonstrate that sophistication didn't have to be a sign of weaknessthat it could be the polished, fun-loving style of those who were basically tough? Cary Grant has said that even he wanted to be Cary Grant.
Henry Fonda played roles similar to Grant's, and it isn't hard to imagine Fonda as the husband in "The Awful Truth" or as the paleontologist hero of "Bringing Up Baby," but Fonda would have been more of a hayseed, and lighter-weight. And if Grant had played Fonda's role in "The Lady Eve" Grant wouldn't have been the perfect, pratfalling innocent that Fonda was: Fonda, with his saintly bumpkin's apologetic smile and his double-jointed gait, could play bashful stupes more convincingly than any other romantic star. However, it's part of the audience's pleasure in Grant that he isn't a green kidhe's a muscular, full-bodied man making a fool of himself. There were other gifted urbane

THE PHILADELPHIA STORY He could be smooth, classy, and debonair, dressed to the nines with a look and a line to both mesmerize and hold at bay any female around; yet, his cool exterior could also spontaneously evaporate, leaving behind a tumbling, bumbling bespeckled paleontologist or a brash, energetic newspaper editor with a lightning-fast wit and an unshakable deadpan. In the history of movies, only Cary Grant has managed to combine charm, chaos, charisma and gothic good looks into such an unique and universally appealing screen personality. From screwball comedies to romantic dramas to suspense thrillers, he created characters who were simultaneously singular and familiar. He was an everyman to whom every other man looked up a cinema god who somehow kept his feet on the ground. Before he became a funny man himself, Cary found himself on the receiving end of some of Mae West 's most risqué remarks. In fact, it was Cary whom she asked to "come up sometime and see me" in SHE DONE HIM WRONG, the first of two films he made with the legendary Depression-era sex symbol under his contract to Paramount in 1933.
