The Marine Corps band played the national anthem as Dailey unveiled a space-suited Glenn in his new place of honor, suspended 40 feet above the floor of the museum's breathtaking Gallery 100. He occupies a space near his Mercury "Friendship 7" orbiter capsule and between Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis and the Bell Airacomet, the first American turbojet aircraft in regular production. The NASM will display Glenn in his original 1962-vintage flight suit, which he wore for his historic orbital space flight, until December 2004. Beginning next year, Glenn will alternate monthly between his 1962 and 1998 spacesuits. On occasions of historic import, Glenn will be displayed in appropriate livery, such as his WWII flight suit, his Korean War full-dress uniform, or the navy-blue and gray suits he wore during his four terms in the Senate.

Email example contributed by "PACFAC," 5 June 2001: Subject: Great answer by Senator Glenn Ladies and gentlemen, Here's a small indication of what the military person runs up against in the beltway of our capital. No wonder we have so many problems in Washington.... Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what they do for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive impromptu speech, but its also a good example of one man's explanation of why men and women in the uniformed services do what they do for a living. An example of what those who have never served think of the Military.

Senator Glenn: All Systems Go! The Huffington Center on Aging proudly salutes Sen. Glenn for his courage to undertake his latest endeavor. NASA will send 77 year old John Glenn back into space, 36 years after the he became the first American to orbit earth. Senator Glenn will serve as "Payload Specialist" on shuttle Discovery in October 1998. We certainly believe that he, along with other Americans his age, has "The Right Stuff" Dr. Robert J. Luchi, founding director of the Huffington Center on Aging, is one member of a team of geriatricians/gerontologists convened to assess potential risks and benefits of flying older adults. The team, comprised of Luchi, John Burton, M.D. of John's Hopkins, Jeffrey Halter, M.D. of the University of Michigan and Robert Butler, M.D. of Mt Sinai, has had two conference calls with NASA officials to discuss these issues. The possibility of relating changes in body physiology in microgravity to changes in body physiology which occurs as one ages here on earth are of considerable interest to researchers such as Luchi. This shuttle launch is equipped with the SpaceHab-DM (Space Habitat), and that means an extra seat. Glenn will be able to fly as part of a set of experiments sponsored by the National Institutes of Health to investigate connections between the effects of weightlessness and the aging process. The research was peer reviewed by independent scientists, and includes studies on sleep, muscle atrophy, balance, and clinical evaluations of blood and heart function.

Architectural Heritage Restoration Project Welcome to the Virtual Tour of the John Glenn's Trading Post Enter The Website In 1873, the Bow River valley’s first settlers, John and Adelaide Glenn, built a modest "trading stop" and "home" where the Blackfoot Trail crossed Fish Creek. By 1998, the passage of time, the activity of vandals, and rotting timbers made it clear that some action would have to be taken to preserve this first European construction in the Calgary area. Image Source: Glenbow Museum Archive, Calgary Fish Creek Provincial Park and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Calgary undertook a joint project aimed at researching the history and architecture of the building and preserving the remaining structure. The building was taken apart in1998 by the Department of Archaeology Field School students which recorded the positions of all the architectural elements and stored the materials for future reconstruction. During the 1999 field season, the Department of Archaeology Field School has continued its excavations at the Glenn Building site and the University of Calgary and Fish Creek Provincial Park are cooperating to restore the building to its 1873 origins in its original location. Digital model of the Trading Post was constructed. This website represents the Virtual Tour of the Trading Post.

Kerry, pummeled by attacks during the convention on his national security record, also made some of his most forceful comments on the subject yet, defending his oft-ridiculed vote against $87 billion for the troops and rebuilding efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, which the Republicans have painted as demonstrating a lack of support for the military. "This president rushed to war without a plan to win the peace," Kerry said loudly. "And I believe that because he didn't have a plan to win the peace, it was irresponsible to give him a blank check that gave $20 billion that was going to go . . . to Halliburton and all these other companies, that we needed accountability for this president."

Right Stuff for the Super Stuff
John Glenn will conduct tests with a space age super-substance called aerogel on STS-95
October 26, 1998: The coming return of John Glenn to space highlights the differences between how the world looked to Americans in 1962 and how it looks to us in 1998.
In 1962, as the first American to orbit the globe, Glenn reflected on the delicate environmental balance that protects life on the pale blue planet from the harsh and forbidding black matte of stars.
"Each time around, I noticed a strange phenomenon. The stars shone steady as they neared the horizon. Then they dimmed for a bit. But the stars brightened again before actually setting. They appeared to be passing through a layer of haze about six to eight degrees above the earth and two degrees thick."
The haze that Glenn described was the thin line of atmosphere: oxygen to breathe, ozone to shield ultraviolet radiation, and carbon dioxide and methane to trap reflected heat. The gaseous stuff of life. But from orbit, even the Earth's atmosphere acts only as a semi-transparent window to the starlit sky. For Glenn's first orbital flight the mission goal was to return safely. Now 30 years later, he will use space not just as 'the high ground' but as a working laboratory. Glenn and the other astronauts will be making the first run at space-manufacture for a product called aerogel. In the words of early Mercury astronauts 30 year ago, the mission will 'push the envelope' on how aerogel can be improved. If successful, the experiment returns not just more aerogel, but a fundamentally different kind of material, what might be called the first "astrogel."

Helen also asked him about rumors that he's considering Condi Rice or Jeb Bush as a 2008 running mate, and whether he'd support federal legislation banning gun confiscation of the sort that happened in New Orleans after Katrina.
