John H. Glenn, Jr.
by Tara Gray John Herschel Glenn, Jr., Colonel USMC (Ret.), was born on July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio. He grew up in New Concord, Ohio, where he attended school and graduated from New Concord High School. He then enrolled in New Concord's Muskingum College where he received a B.S. in engineering. He had already learned to fly at the small New Philadelphia airfield through a government civilian pilot training program to let young men start learning how to fly while they were completing their education. He took the Army Air Corps physical examination, passed it and was sworn in. However, when no orders came he took the Navy's physical, which he also passed and was sworn into the Naval Aviation Cadet Program. His orders came right away and he left for training. He went to the University of Iowa for preflight training and then continued on to Olathe, Kansas, for primary training. He finished up with advanced training in Corpus Christi, Texas. While at Corpus Christi, he learned that he could volunteer for duty in the Marine Corps and receive a commission in the Marines rather than the Navy. He won his wings and lieutenant's bars in 1943, and on April 6 of that year, he married the former Anna Margaret Castor, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H.W. Castor of New Concord.

Astronaut John Herschel Glenn, Jr. John Glenn seems to have done it all college graduate, distinguished war hero, first American to orbit Earth, U.S. senator, the oldest person to fly in space.
The Right Stuff pioneer was born July 18, 1921, at Cambridge, Ohio. He was graduated from New Concord (Ohio) High School, which is known today as John Glenn High School. He earned a B.S. degree in engineering from Muskingum College at New Concord. In 1943, three months into his junior year at college, John Glenn enlisted in the Marine Corps and married Anna Margaret Castor.
In World War II, the pilot flew 59 missions. Later, after two years as flight instructor, John Glenn volunteered for the Korean War, flying 63 missions and shooting down three MIGs. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross six times and several other medals.
John Glenn gained national recognition in 1957 when he set a transcontinental speed record, flying from Los Angeles to New York in 3 hours and 23 minutes. The next year, he was selected by NASA to be one of the first seven astronauts in the U.S. space program's Project Mercury.
Four years later, on February 20, 1962, Glenn became a national hero as the first American and third person to orbit Earth. Launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, he rode inside a capsule named Friendship 7, successfully circling the globe three times and completing his flight in 4 hours 55 minutes 23 seconds. He reached a then-amazing speed near 17,500 mph. Four million spectators lined the streets of Manhattan nine days later to give him a hero's welcome.

Glenn was born July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio. He attended primary and secondary schools in New Concord, Ohio. He attended Muskingum College in New Concord and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Muskingum College also awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science degree in engineering. He has received honorary doctoral degrees from nine colleges or universities. Glenn was assigned to the NASA Space Task Group at Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia, in April 1959 after his selection as a Project Mercury Astronaut. The Space Task Group was moved to Houston and became part of the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in 1962. Glenn flew on Mercury-6 (February 20, 1962) and has logged 4 hours, 55 minutes, 23 seconds in space. Prior to his flight, Glenn had served as backup pilot for Astronauts Shepard and Grissom. When astronauts were given special assignments to ensure pilot input into the design and development of spacecraft, Glenn specialized in cockpit layout and control functioning, including some of the early designs for the Apollo Project. Glenn resigned from the Manned Spacecraft Center on January 16, 1964. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel in October 1964 and retired from the Marine Corps on January 1, 1965. He was a business executive from 1965 until his election to the United States Senate in November 1974 where he now serves. Glenn is assigned to serve as payload specialist on the crew of STS-95. This mission will support a variety of research payloads including deployment of the Spartan solar-observing spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Test Platform, and investigations on space flight and the aging process. STS-95 is scheduled for launch in October 1998.

    John Edwards's Knockout Blow
Posted January 5, 2008 06:43 PM (EST) Read More: Edwards' Campaign John Edwards Breaking Politics News
John Edwards will need a virtuoso performance at tonight's debate to achieve the dramatic come-from-behind win he needs to stay alive. He's facing an opponent in Barack Obama who proved with his amazing Iowa victory that he is an extraordinary organizer, possibly a strategic genius, and above all an inspiring presence who captured Iowans' hunger for change. And he's got momentum. And let's not forget Hillary Clinton, who can count on lots of money, a ruthless campaign operation, and real affection for her and Bill Clinton in the state. But Edwards can definitely win - with a slight retooling of his message.
