AcePilots Main Page F-86 Sabre Jet page John H. Glenn Jr., a true American hero, grew up in New Concord, Ohio, a small religious town. The son of a World War One veteran, his childhood recalls a Norman Rockwell painting: Decoration Day parades, little kids playing in fields and woods, hot fudge sundaes at the local dairy, and marrying the girl next door. He enrolled in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in 1942 and served with the Marines' VMO-155 during World War Two, flying 59 combat missions in F4U Corsairs over the Marshalls, and earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses. Glenn and the Marine fliers of VMO-155 arrived at Majuro, in the Marshalls in July, 1944, after the heavy fighting in that area had subsided. While the Americans had captured the large strategic atolls of Majuro, Kwajalein, Roi-Namur, Eniwetok, and Namu. But isolated Japanese forces held out on Wotje, Maloelap, Mili, and Jaluit.
WWII Combat in the Marshalls
He flew from Majuro for four months, including a couple of long-distance bombing missions against Nauru, which was still producing and delivering phosphate to the Japanese war effort, even in late 1944. In November, Glenn's squadron moved over to Kwajalein, where they continued to attack the Japanese forces in the Marshalls. Now they had a new weapon, napalm, which would only become infamous 25 years later in Vietnam. It was a hideous weapon, and they used it "where intelligence thought there were a lot of people. It was terrible to think what it was like on the ground in the middle of those flames. ... It made you think. Then the psychology of war took over. We were fighting in a war we hadn't started, for the survival of our country, our families, our heritage of freedom."

JOHN GLENN: A MEMOIR

with Nick Taylor
Bantam
422pp/$27.00/November 1999 Reviewed by Steven H Silver An autobiography should reveal something about the person who writes it. By this measure, while interesting, John Glenn's autobiography fails. There appears to be little in John Glenn: A Memoir which is not already available in the public record. Part of this may be due to the fact that John Glenn has lived a very public life since the 1950s. However, if Glenn is to be believed, there is no private man behind the public man. Two of the key figures from Glenn's early life are his father, John Herschel Glenn, and his civics teacher, Harford Steele. These men instilled a sense of duty-to-country in Glenn which would guide him throughout his entire life, first when he dropped out of college to enlist for World War II and later as he remained in the military, journeyed into space, and entered the Senate. In his portrayal of himself, this sense of duty is all pervasive, although the reader does get the feeling that in many cases Glenn's sense of duty happened to fall in line with his own wishes. A striking feature of Glenn's story is the lack of a sense of adversity which appears in the book. Although Glenn lived through the Depression (and his parents almost lost their house), never finished college because of World War II and spent literally years away from his wife, he never bemoans the low points in his life. In fact, his childhood seems like it comes from a Norman Rockwell painting and the reader keeps expecting to see Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn wander through New Concord, Ohio to play at Rangers with John Glenn. Unfortunately, while this demonstrates a character which does not dwell on the negatives, it also puts a strange distance between the John Glenn who is describing his life and the John Glenn who is living the life, as if he is afraid of revealing too much about himself.

John Glenn
John H. Glenn, Jr., was born in Cambridge, Ohio, on July 18, 1921, the son of John Herschel and Clara Sproat Glenn. At age two, young John moved with his parents to New Concord, where his father opened a plumbing business. After relocating to New Concord, the Glenns built a home that doubled as a rooming house for students from nearby Muskingum College. Glenn would write many years later of his childhood, "A boy could not have had a more idyllic early childhood than I did." Surrounded by older students, encouraged by a father who liked to travel, and tutored by a devoted mother, John developed an early interest in science, a fascination with flying, and a sense of patriotism that would define his adult life. He graduated from New Concord High School and attended Muskingum College. Shortly after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Glenn enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and became a Marine pilot. He flew 59 combat missions in the South Pacific during World War II. When the Korean conflict began, Glenn asked for combat duty and flew 63 missions. For his total of 149 missions during the two wars, he received many decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross six times. After the Korean conflict, Glenn attended test pilot school and then joined the Naval Air Test Center's staff of expert flyers. He served as a test pilot for Naval and Marine aircraft, including the FJ3, the F7U Cutlass, and the F8U Crusader. One of Glenn's most notable accomplishments during this period was the 1957 speed record he set flying from Los Angeles to New York in three hours and 23 minutes. "Project Bullet" secured Glenn's reputation as one of the country's top test pilots and provided a stepping stone for his participation in the emerging space exploration program.

Marine Lieutenant John Glenn, 40, travelled about 81,000 miles (more than 130,000km) as he circled the globe three times at more than 17,000 mph (27,000kph). Lieutenant Glenn controlled nearly two of the orbits himself after reporting "minor difficulties" with the automatic altitude control system as he completed the third circuit - the maximum anticipated. Messages from the astronaut were transmitted by radio stations across the United States and United Kingdom and his progress was monitored by 18 ground stations around the world. As he re-entered the atmosphere after his four-hour and 56-minute journey Lieutenant Glenn said: "Boy, that was a real fireball." His spacecraft, Friendship Seven, landed at 2040 GMT 240 miles north-west of Puerto Rico, where it was picked up by the US destroyer Noa.

Metzenbaum: "How can you run for Senate when you've never held a 'job'?"
