Facial treatments as torture in Brazil. I Immediately obvious in any Gilliam work is how different his films appear from the "normal" perception of life. When the theater lights go down, the viewer is thrust into a world that is unsettling and unfamiliar. If it weren’t for Gilliam’s customary use of subtitles ("Somewhere in the 20th century" for Brazil , "The Age Of Reason" in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen ), then the audience would have no reference points (albeit the reference points are purposely left vague) from which to begin comprehending his films. Even in the opening of his most "realistic" film The Fisher King , Gilliam turns a normal radio studio into strange surroundings by his use of severe shadows, high-angle shots, and extreme close-ups of the deejay’s mouth.
An extreme close-up of the deejay’s mouth as he
spews vitriol into the microphone in
The Fisher King. Gilliam is not interested in capturing "reality" so much as capturing a particular mood or feeling. He produces this specific feeling in one of two ways. The first type tends to be bleak in tone. In these cases, Gilliam shows the negative effect of modernity unleashed upon the world. One example comes from the opening sequence of Time Bandits (1981). Here, Gilliam uses several levels of meaning to prove his point: match cutting from square houses in an aerial shot to a close-up of square appliances displayed on a square TV, the framing of the characters as they lounge on plastic-covered living room furniture, and even the voice-over coming from the television, which boasts "The Moderna Wonder-major all-automatic convenient centerette gives you all the time in the world to do the things you really want to do!"

Terry Gilliam
Terry Gilliam is a man who can best be described as suffering from an excess of joie de vivre. With a history of directing visually outstanding films whose story runs heavily into fantasy and the fantastic, Gilliam is perhaps the prime choice to helm the film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson 's story of the drug addled journalist Raoul Duke, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. We spent an hour with Gilliam recently, and probed his mind for what little we could find there, discussing the star psyches of Johnny Depp (who plays Duke) and 12 Monkeys ' star Brad Pitt , and covered territory all the way back to his days as the American member of Monty Python's Flying Circus As with our last outing with the director, we both found ourselves collapsing into fits of giggling laughter and hysterics. So, in keeping with the theme of Fear and Loathing , we started flashback style, in the past, and covered as much ground as we could CrankyCritic: What moment for you defines the end of the 60s?

(b. 22/11/1940, USA)
Of course, everyone remembers Terry Gilliam from the various successful movies he directed ('12 Monkeys', 'Brazil'), or the goofy animations he did for Monty Python's Flying Circus. However, before he moved to England and became a member of the legendary Monty Python team, Gilliam drew cartoons and comics throughout the early and mid-1960s. His first printed work appeared in Fang, a college's humor magazine of which he became an editor later on. He then became an associate editor of HELP! magazine, for which he also drew cartoons. In 1964/1965, his future Python colleague John Cleese made a guest appearance in HELP! in a photo-feature. When he first came to Europe, Gilliam provided two short stories to the French magazine Pilote . Gilliam also provided some comics to Petersen Publishing's magazines CARtoons and SURFtoons, for which Alex Toth also contributed work. In CARtoons Gilliam drew the comic 'My son Arnold, the Car', which already showed the absurdism and silliness he would later further develop in the Monty Python series. www.pythonline.com

    Terry Gilliam
Occupation: Director, screenwriter, animator, actor Born: November 22, 1940, Minneapolis, MN Education: Occidental College, CA (political science) Successful cartoonist who met John Cleese while working on the magazine Help! and subsequently became the resident animator with Monty Python's Flying Circus. Gilliam made his solo directing debut with JABBERWOCKY (1977), a grisly medieval interpretation of the Lewis Carroll poem, and scored a popular success with the delightfully "adult" children's feature TIME BANDITS (1981). Gilliam's greatest success came when he moved away from Pythonesque humor to direct BRAZIL (1985), a visually stunning, Orwellian look into a totalitarian future. After he fought and won an extended battle with Universal to gain final cut on the picture, it was released to considerable critical acclaim and hailed by many as one of the best films of the 1980s. Gilliam's next feature, THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN (1989), was an expensive, visually sumptuous commercial flop which failed to reach the kind of crossover audience that had patronized TIME BANDITS. Having gained a somewhat exaggerated reputation for being an extravagant perfectionist with a tendency to go over schedule and budget with his visionary ambition, Gilliam regained his standing in Hollywood with THE FISHER KING (1991), in which the director was able to combine mainstream appeal (due largely to the casting of Robin Williams) with the eccentric fantasy of his previous films.

Terry Gilliam to Direct Potter? Posted May 4th 2006 9:05PM by Mark Beall
Filed under: Action Deals RumorMonger Fandom ... A.V. Club , but their major source of information here seems to be IMDB , so consider it nothing more than rumor for now. IMDB is a great source in its own way, but not particularly reliable on early cast/crew news.
So the revolving Door of Directors for Harry Potter is turning yet again. Yes, film five is still in production, but who is going to let something like that stop us from discussing the directorial control of film six? Already a Half Blood Prince director is floating around a name which has long been attached to Potter speculation, as it has been reported he's the guy Rowlings has wanted all along. That's right friends, Monty Python's own Terry Gilliam is back in the mix, at least according the IMDB.
I'm a big fan of Terry Gilliam, and a big fan of Potter , but I haven't yet decided how I think the two will mix. If the guy had been in charge since the beginning I'd probably be more comfortable with it, but Gilliam has a very distinctive style which really doesn't quite match up with what's been done so far. Nontheless I'd like to see him try; everyone else has, after all. Tags: cinema film Harry Potter monthy python ... Comments

    Terry Gilliam
Terry Gilliam (1940-) b. Minnesota, USA.
Terry Gilliam was educated at Birmingham High School, showing skill at an early age in drawing by amusing himself and family with strange alien figures. While the Brit-based Pythons were worshipping The Goon Show , Gilliam's formative years were obsessed with Kurtzman's influential comic book Mad and both his writing and drawing work predominantly reflected this. Crucially, it was during work on Help! that Gilliam met John Cleese for the first time, but the magazine eventually folded. Cleese introduced Gilliam to producer Humphrey Barclay involved in 1967 on a little programme entitled Do Not Adjust Your Set with Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Erie Idle. Indeed, Barclay, having initially bought two sketches off the animator, even wrote a letter keeping Gilliam out of the American Army while he worked on the show. With the landmark piece Elephants, Gilliam found his niche with cutout animation, grabbing influence and indeed raw material from the great masters. If inspiration wasn't forthcoming Gilliam would journey to The National Gallery and plunder images from heroes like Albert Dilter, Dote and Bronzino's Venus and Cupid - the foot of Cupid becoming the icon for a Python generation. However, Gilliarn's non-judgmental appreciation of artistic imagery found him equally at home rummaging through the pages of 1920s Sears and Roebuck catalogues to create the most potent 'look' of

Following Jabberwocky's relative failure, Gilliam regrouped with his fellow Pythonites, co-creating The Life of Brian, the tale of a man with the misfortune of being confused with Jesus Christ. He left the directing duties to Terry Jones, focusing on animation, screenwriting, and acting. Gilliam returned to directing with Time Bandits (1979), a surreal journey through history led by a small boy and several dwarves.
After co-directing with Terry Jones the third and final Python film, Monty Python's the Meaning of Life (1983), Gilliam made what many people consider his masterpiece, the satiric Brazil (1985. A failure at the box office, Brazil has made up for that disappointment with its cult status. In addition to critical praise and a Los Angeles Film Critics award for Best Film, Gilliam received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
It was four years before Gilliam stepped behind the camera again, for The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1989). Returning to historical fantasy, Gilliam tells the unlikely tales of the title character as though they really happened. The Baron explores the inside of a volcano, takes a hot air balloon to the moon, gets swallowed by a whale, and quells a war that he himself started. Munchausen's stories were less well known to most Americans than to audiences in Britain, where the film won British Academy Awards for Best Production Design, Best Makeup, and Best Costume Design.

    Review: Terry Gilliam's Tideland
By Eliza Gauger The newest Terry Gilliam movie is best described as nightmarish. With no particular point, the end of the film evokes relief and embarrassment, as if you have just finished witnessing Gilliam pass an enormous gallstone kidney stone. One feels the urge to let go his clammy hand, pat him gently and ask him if he feels better. The film stars young Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill) as Jeliza-Rose, daughter of an aging, dysfunctional, but still affectionate smack addict, Noah. Jeff Bridges, reprising the Dude with harder drugs, plays Noah with an intense sympathythe most engaging and intriguing member of the cast. Jeliza's unnamed (and ambiguously fat/pregnant) mother (Jennifer Tilly), spends the eight minutes prior to her heroin overdose alternately deprecating and cuddling Jeliza, and cramming handfuls of chocolate into her smeared, sad mouth. Then she dies in a grotesque splay, and it is all Jeliza can do to keep Noah from setting the horrible woman on fire.
The girl's life consists of playing nursemaid to her junkie parents and maintaining a shrill, running narration by her variously-personified disembodied doll heads. Ferland does all the voice acting for the dolls, which take on greater independence as the film goes on. Each of them possesses uncomfortably differentiated accents, and eventually Jeliza's mouth ceases to move at all when the dolls speak.

Terry Gilliam traveling back to La Mancha
Writer: Sean Gandert News, Published online on 09 Jan 2008 In the middle of his busy shooting schedule for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (which, honestly, looks like it will be a lot better than its name might imply), Terry Gilliam spoke to Empire about his upcoming projects, and it looks like he's going back to finish some of the films he's been forced to abandon in the past. The first of these is The Man Who Killed Don Quixote , the failure of which was documented in Lost in La Mancha "[Producer] Jeremy Thomas is very close to getting all the pieces of paper signed from all the people who you gotta get signed," Gilliam said. "He’s been on it for a year now, and he’s come the closest to getting it untangled from the legal swamp it was in. And, um, I don’t see why, I don’t see anything that’s gonna stop it now. He’s just gotta get all the paperwork done and then I call Mr. Depp and see which pirate film he’s still on." The film is Gilliam's take on Don Quixote , where Depp plays a character who accidentally goes back in time and gets mistaken for Sancho Panza. Depp worked with Gilliam on
