A Film Review by James Berardinelli
United States, 2000
U.S. Release Date:
12/15/00 (wide)
Running Length:
MPAA Classification:
PG-13 (Sexual humor, sexual situations, profanity)
Theatrical Aspect Ratio:
Seen at: UA Riverview, Philadelphia Cast: Mel Gibson, Helen Hunt, Marisa Tomei, Bette Midler, Lauren Holly, Mark Feuerstein, Alan Alda, Ashley Johnson, Judy Greer
Director: Nancy Meyers
Producers: Susan Cartsonis, Bruce Davey, Gina Matthews, Nancy Meyers, Matt Williams
Screenplay: Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa
Cinematography: Dean Cundey Music: Alan Silvestri U.S. Distributor: Paramount Pictures The key to enjoying What Women Want - a feather-light trifle that will probably find favor at the box office - is not considering the age-old question of what might have been. The underlying premise - a male chauvinist suddenly gaining access to women's thoughts - is so infinitely rich that it could have been used as the linchpin of a truly great motion picture. However, the agenda set by director Nancy Meyers and screenwriters Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, is of a much less substantive nature. So, rather than looking at What Women Want for what is isn't, it's most productive to view it for what it is - a romantic comedy that is as entertaining as it is inconsequential.

MPAA Rating: [PG-13] sexuality, language Genre: Comedy/Romance Runtime: 126 minutes Finally...a man is listening... Summary After a freak accident, advertising executive Nick Marshall (Gibson) gains the power to hear womens' thoughts and uses it to further his career at the expense of female rival Darcy Maguire (Hunt). What's Good humorous performance from Mel Gibson good estranged father/daughter dynamic What's Bad too many climaxes follow each other back to back Gibson/Hunt relationship is the weakest link Commentary Reviewer: Andrew Manning As surprising as this may be, there are actually people out there who don't seem to know that this movie is a chick flick. After all, what would give it away? It's only written, directed, and produced by a woman and centers on the clueless psyche of a chauvinistic male. But take heart, all my penis-packing brethren: your women could be dragging you to a far worse cinematic fate. While What Women Want is undeniably a chick flick, the action moves quickly and with brisk humor thanks to Mel Gibson. As the conveniently described "man's man," Gibson's character of high powered, woman seducing Nick Marshall gains the power to hear what women are thinking after a freak accident: while reluctantly testing out women's products (such as nail polish, pantyhose, wonderbras, and bikini wax), he falls into a tub with a live hair dryer. The electrical shock turns something on in his brain that allows him to hear women's thoughts, and he quickly uses the power to further his own career.

"Dad's like an uncle to me," she says. "What Women Want" is a romantic comedy of such easygoing charm and deft humor that it seems to virtually glide across the screen – not unlike Mel Gibson in a charming Chapter 4 sequence that pays visual homage to Gene Kelly, audio tribute to Frank Sinatra and generally sets the tone for what is to follow.
In this key scene, Gibson’s Nick Marshall, a hotshot Chicago ad exec who’s known as a macho man’s man, has been dealt a double whammy. First, he’s been passed over for an expected promotion in favor of a female outsider, Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt), and what’s more, he’s expected to dream up promotional ideas for a batch of women’s consumer products. Nick turns to a Sinatra record for inspiration. As Ol’ Blue Eyes croons "I Won’t Dance" in a silkily enveloping arrangement that coasts with assurance through the mains and rears, Nick dances out his frustration while singing in the center channel in a voice that blends surprisingly pleasingly with the Sinatra rendition.
The sequence accomplishes several things. For starters, it shows us that Gibson is a very decent dancer, his face in frame with his feet often enough to indicate that it’s the actor and not a double most of the time. More important to the overall film, the moment creates an atmosphere of enchantment. When, shortly afterwards, Nick is electrocuted and recovers to find himself suddenly able to telepathically "hear" all female thoughts, it’s an event that fits easily into the universe depicted by director Nancy Meyers and screenwriters Josh Goldsmith & Cathy Yuspa, working from a story by Goldsmith, Yuspa and Diane Drake.

"I know just as little now about what women want as I did when I started. And I came to the conclusion that That´s by a very clever design, and it´s intended that there are aspects of men and women that are meant to be a mystery."
"What Women Want" was Mel Gibson´s first foray into romantic comedy since the unfortunate "Bird on a wire".
Mel plays Nick Marshall, a womanizing Chicago adman who loses the coveted post of creative director at his agency to a female rival (Helen HunT)
An accident with a hairdryer shocks him into hearing the private thoughts of every woman. Suddenly, he realizes he can use his gift to his advantage, and manipulate the usurper Hunt.

MOVIE REVIEW What Women Want Starring: Mel Gibson, Helen Hunt, Marisa Tomei
Director: Nancy Meyers
Rating: PG-13 Studio: Paramount Pictures Review Posted: Rating: By Michael Brendan McLarney "Muliebral Mindreader" Riding the inherent likeability of its star, "What Women Want" is a romantic comedy that takes enormous pleasure in displaying the hilarious possibilities branching out from its premise. Director Nancy Myers has great confidence in the movie's concept, and is able to get the most from her story by way of a wonderfully charismatic central performance from Mel Gibson. Only near the end, where the film puts the serious message front and center, does the movie stumble a little. Not because the message it delivers isn't a good one (it certainly is), but because the somewhat gray tone in the final act pales in comparison to the gleeful fun the film has in its first ninety minutes.
Nick Marshall (Gibson) is the ultimate man's man, as we are told at the outset by his first wife (Lauren Holly). She narrates the backstory, letting us in on why he views women in the dim-witted, chauvinistic light he does. Being the son of a Vegas showgirl, he wasn't exactly brought up surrounded by examples of strong, self-sufficient women who commanded respect in public and emotional maturity in private. Instead, he grew up seeing them as ophthalmic eye candy; merely visual targets resting in the concupiscent crosshairs of men not perceptive enough to realize there is more to them that meets the eye.
