Psychologist, Harvard University; Author, Wet Mind
Human Intelligence Can Be Increased, and Can Be Increased Dramatically I am optimistic that human intelligence can be increased, and can be increased dramatically in the near future. I see three avenues that will lead to this end. First, the fruits of cognitive neuroscience and related fields have identified a host of distinct neural systems in the human brain. Different combinations of these systems are used in the service of accomplishing different tasks, and each system can be made more efficient by "targeted training." Such training involves having people perform tasks that are designed to exercise very specific abilities, which grow out of distinct neural networks. Just as a body builder can do curls to build up biceps and dips on parallel bars to build up triceps, we can design computer-game-like tasks that exercise specific parts of the brain—mental muscles, if you will. By exercising the right sets of systems, specific types of reasoning not only can be improved but—the holy grail of training studies—such improvement can generalize to new tasks that draw on those systems. Second, people often grapple with problems in groups, be they formally designated teams or casual huddles around the water cooler. I am optimistic that understanding the nature of such group interactions will increase human intelligence. Just as a mechanical calculator can extend our mental capacities, other people help us extend our intelligence—both in a cognitive sense (as required to solve problems) and in an emotional sense (as required to detect and respond appropriately to emotions, ours and those of others). In this sense, other people can serve as "social prosthetic systems," as extensions of our own brains; a wooden leg can fill in for a missing limb, and others' brains can fill in for our cognitive and emotional limitations. To the extent that researchers come to understand how such social prosthetic systems arise and operate, they will understand how to increase human intelligence.

You won't feel cheated or deceived my Mr. Brady (or Puck) as you listen to Fob , though. Instead, you will be captivated by this remarkably elusive, mercurial, and enigmatic musical personality. Geoffrey Brady has performed in many varied groups over the years: from the manic klezmer-punk band Yid Vicious , to the laundromat-touring prog-rock/jazz collective Yammer , to the hedonistic sonic terrorists The Disposable Art Ensemble , to the (apparently) straight-laced Madison Symphony Orchestra Fob completely solo: he composed all of the music and even plays all of the instruments.

69. The Angevin Dynasties
Geoffrey s successor Fulk III Nerra d.1040, one of the most remarkable figures of his stephen of Blois as the English king and as duke of Normandy.
http://xenophongroup.com/montjoie/anjou.htm
The Angevin Dynasties
Anjou is a historical and cultural region encompassing, today the western French département of Maine-et-Loire and coextensive with the former 'ancient' political province of Anjou.
Organized in the Gallo-Roman period as the Civitas Andegavensis , it later became the countship of Anjou and (from 1360) the duchy of Anjou. Some sources refer to Robert 'the Strong' (d.866) as count of Anjou. If so, his Angevin title went into the French Royal house with his sons, both of whom were kings of France: Eudes (Odo) (887-893) and Robert I (922-923). These early references are generally not identified, as would suggest, to be the 'first' House of Anjou. Rather the 'first house' of Anjou is assigned a slightly later date. First Angevin Dynasty of counts (before 942-1214) Under one of the sons of Robert 'the Strong' [le Fort], Anjou was entrusted to a certain Ingelger [Enjuger], who became the founder of the first Angevin dynasty. Ingelger's son Fulk [Foulque] I the Red [le Roux] rid the country of the Normans and enlarged his domains by taking part of Touraine. He died in 942, and under his successor, Fulk II 'the Good' [le Bon], the destruction caused by the preceding wars was repaired. Geoffrey [Geoffroi] I Grisegonelle [d.987], who succeeded Fulk II in about 960, began the policy of expansion that was to characterize this first feudal dynasty. He helped Hugh Capet to seize the French crown but died some months after the new king's accession (987). Geoffrey's successor Fulk III Nerra [d.1040], one of the most remarkable figures of his period and the most powerful member of the dynasty, ruled from 987 to 1040. He finally drove his encroaching neighbours back beyond the frontiers of Anjou and built strongly fortified castles along the border of his territory. Fulk's son Geoffrey II 'Martel' (1040-60) pursued the policy of expansion begun by his father and annexed the Vendômois and a part of Maine to Anjou. Because he left no sons, his two nephews, Geoffrey III the Bearded [le Barbu] and Fulk IV 'the Rude' [le Réchin], shared the succession. However, they soon came into armed conflict, and Fulk defeated Geoffrey in 1068. Nevertheless, he had to give up most of the lands that Fulk III Nerra had acquired to defend his fief against the claims of the Duke of Normandy.

Geoffrey was the eldest son of Fulk, Count of Anjou and King-Consort of Jerusalem. Geoffrey's mother was Eremburge of La Flèche, heiress of Maine. Geoffrey received his nickname for the yellow sprig of broom blossom (genêt is the French name for the 'genista', or Broom plant) he wore in his hat as a badge.
King Henry I of England, having heard good reports on Geoffrey's talents and prowess, sent his royal legates to Anjou to negotiate a marriage between Geoffrey and his own daughter, Matilda. Consent was obtained from both parties, and the fifteen-year-old Geoffrey was knighted in Rouen by King Henry in preparation for the wedding. Interestingly, there was no opposition to the marriage from the Church, despite the fact that Geoffrey's sister was the widow of Matilda's brother (only son of King Henry) which fact had been used to annul the marriage of another of Geoffrey's sisters to the Norman pretender William Clito.

Recent identification of the seal of Matilda of the Perche fig. 1
Kathleen Thompson Honorary Research Fellow
University of Sheffield Kathleen.Thompson@shu.ac.uk p. 71, p. 72, p. 73, p. 76, p. 77, There are references to Matilda's seal in eighteen acts and the impression survives, associated with an act preserved in the Cathedral Archives in Canterbury (no. 12) [ fig. 1 ]. In addition the seal is depicted in a seventeenth-century abstract of a joint act by Count Geoffrey and the countess in favour of Fontevraud. The pointed oval seal shows a standing lady, full face, dressed in an elegant close-fitting dress with tight sleeves and her head is apparently bound with a fillet. She holds a bird in her left hand a rod topped with a fleur de lys in her right hand. There is a counterseal made up of three chevrons, the conventional arms of the counts of the Perche. The Canterbury impression was made on uncoloured wax, mounted on red and yellow cords, while the Fontevraud impression was apparently made on green wax, mounted on white silk cords p. 77
