Judy Garland's Impact on Gay Culture
Gay mag The Advocate refers to gay icon Judy Garland as the "Elvis of homosexuals." Even though Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 – June 22, 1969) had numerous gay friends and a gay father it is believed that her true connection with gay men was rooted in her ability to overcome the inner conflict, instability and loneliness that defined her life even during stardom. Judy's necessity to maintain a "stage presence" at all times despite her inner turmoil led to a severe prescription drug addiction and eventually her tragic death. Gay men of the homophobic 50s and 60s identified with the dichotomy of her life as they too had to hide behind walls of perceived strength.
Garland's journey to personal acceptance as the young Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz resonated throughout the gay community. Despite intense fear, confusion and a series of trials, Judy as Dorothy finally made it "home" by realizing that she possessed all of the heart, strength and courage needed to find the true happiness that lived within. Gay men of the past and today also embarked on adventures of self-discover that led full circle to self-acceptance.

    • Born: 10 June 1922 Birthplace: Grand Rapids, Minnesota Died: 22 June 1969 (overdose of sleeping pills) Best Known As: Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz
Name at birth: Frances Gumm Judy Garland's performance as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939) won her a special Oscar and gave her a theme song for the rest of her life: "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." As a teenager Garland appeared in a series of cheerfully fluffy movies with fellow teen star Mickey Rooney , including Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938) and Babes in Arms (1939). In the 1940s she was a song-and-dance star in movies like Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). She married director Vincente Minnelli; their daughter Liza Minnelli became a star in her own right. (Garland eventually married five times.) In the 1950s Garland began touring as a singer and became famous for her emotional, high-energy live performances. Throughout her last two decades she struggled with addiction to prescription drugs and alcohol, and finally died of an apparent sleeping pill overdose at age 47. Though not gay herself, Garland somehow became an enduring icon for the gay community, and the term "Friend of Dorothy" became pop culture shorthand for a gay man... LOUIS Born and raised in show business, little Frances Gumm changed her name to Judy Garland and became one of classic Hollywood's most popular musical entertainers and actresses. She won her only Academy Award in 1939 "for her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile during the past year," most notably for her work on THE WIZARD OF OZ . Later in her career however, she would earn greater recognition for her acting abilities with Oscar nominations for her performances in A STAR IS BORN (1954) and JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG (1961). Judy is my favorite female classic movie vocalist, and in 2004, the American Film Institute's ranked five of her famous film numbers among its list of the 100 Greatest Movie Songs more than any other female vocalist. See more about Judy in her most famous role as Dorothy in THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939). Although it wasn't her first film, it was definitely the movie that made her a star and the role for which she'll always be remembered.
