The figure is aristocratic, the face is a vision. But it's the eyes that enthrall the viewer and Vronsky who has expected his mother to be the first woman off the train. Bosley Crowther, New York Times film critic from 1940 to 1967, had this to say about the Garbo eyes: "Set in the face of classic structure we... September 5, 1965 by HOLLIS ALPERT:

Saga of Greta Garbo
femme fatale Greta Garbo made 24 films in all for M.G.M., 10 of them silent, 14 with sound. Now and then one of the old ones is revived (many have appeared on television over the years) and she is still a lure at the box office. Undoubtedly some in these audiences come to laugh at the exaggerated, oldfashioned doings on the screen, but the laughter when Garbo is on very soon turns uncomfortable; her spell takes hold and quells the most irrepressible unbeliever. did do things in her face, and when her eyes widened and glanced upward in a look of surrender to the lucky beneficiary, Barrymore, something happened. And it happens every time. The throb deepened in her voice, and the 1965 would-be scoffers sat still and respectful, the males hoping, perhaps, that some such mysteriously beautiful creature would appear suddenly in their own lives. After John Gilbert, the names of many men were associated with her, among them director Clarence Brown, director Rouben Mamourian and, for a brief period, Noel Coward. At any rate, she was only After the showing, Hauser and Remarque urged her to view the exhibition of Mexican Indian art that happened to be on the main floor of the museum at the time. She demurred, on the grounds that she would be recognized. Griffith solemnly averred that no Museum of Modern Art visitor would be the kind to gawk or ask for autographs. She gave in. No sooner had she started through the chain of rooms which held the exhibition than the crowd surged toward her, and Griffith found himself at the tail end of a fast-moving procession led by Garbo.

Life following high school was a significant passage into adulthood for me, as I began an adventure to San Francisco from my home in Phoenix during the height of the Haight-Ashbury movement of hippies, grass, and flowers in their hair. The 60's movement brought with it the essence of a new culturally diverse society, where people of every color, gender, class, and nation were welcomed. This unusual generation of migrating youths created a borderland culture of social influence that was not only exceptionally unique, but crossed many lines of representation. In a decaying 1800's Victorian grand hotel and former house of ill repute that became a designated flophouse, The Kirkland Hotel, affectionately known as The Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Girls and Boys, and known worldwide in Peter, Paul and Mary's song "My Name is Jack",") a small circle of friends and I found a home. I learned little of adversity in those "Streets called Love."

    • Interred at Skogskyrkogården Cemetery, Stockholm, Sweden.
    • Lived the last few year of her life in absolute seclusion.
    • Ranked #38 in Empire (UK) magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list. [October 1997]
    • Letters and correspondence between Garbo and poet, socialite and notorious lesbian 'Mercedes De Acosta' were unsealed on April 15, 2000, exactly 10 years after Garbo's death (per De Acosta's instructions). The letters revealed no love affair between the two, as had been fervently rumored.
    • Garbo, according to movie director Jacques Feyder: "At 9 o'clock a.m. the work may begin. "Tell Mrs. Garbo we're ready" says the director. "I'm here" a low voice answers, and she appears, perfectly dressed and combed as the scene needs. Nobody could say by what door she came but she's there. And at 6 o'clock PM, even if the shot could be finished in five minutes, she points at the watch and goes away giving you a sorry smile. She's very strict with herself and hardly pleased with her work. She never looks rushes nor goes to the premières but some days later, early in the afternoon, enters all alone an outskirts movie house, takes place in a cheap seat and gets out only when the projection finishes, masked with her sunglasses".

Garbo, Greta (1905-1990) Once billed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as the "Swedish sphinx," Greta Garbo is perhaps best known for her mystery. Raised in a culture that did not pursue or value celebrity, Garbo was frightened and horrified by the almost predatory interest that the American public took in movie stars. Although she was a skilled and complex actress who created many memorable screen personae, she retired when she was only thirty-six, not only from films, but from any kind of public life. Sponsor Message.
Afterwards, she lived in New York City in virtual seclusion for almost fifty years, refusing interviews or photographs, and emerging from her apartment only when protected from public view by big hats and sunglasses. Still, in spite of, or perhaps because of, the way she withheld herself, the public was mesmerized by her in a unique way. One need say only the name "Garbo!" to evoke a gentle, passionate dignity as deep and complex as the Swedish sphinx herself. Garbo began life in poverty as Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, the daughter of a janitor in Stockholm, Sweden. When her father died in 1919 of tuberculosis, Greta had to quit school at the age of fourteen and go to work.
