With her breathtaking beauty and enigmatic persona, Greta Garbo is the ultimate Hollywood icon. Though many books have tried to unlock the mystique of the "Swedish Sphinx" by focusing primarily on her personal life, Mark A. Vieira’s Greta Garbo: A Cinematic Legacy (Abrams, $50, September 1, 2005) is the first to pay serious attention to what made her an icon—her twenty-four Hollywood films, among them classics such as Grand Hotel, Flesh and the Devil, Queen Christina, and Ninotchka . The portrait that emerges is a new and equally fascinating one.
As MGM’s highest-paid star, Garbo had approval of story, costar, director and cinematographer, wielding power for fifteen years that few could match—yet she was often at odds with the system that made her a phenomenon. Mark Vieira’s painstakingly researched, lively, anecdotal text chronicles Garbo’s turbulent career from her American debut and overnight stardom in 1926 to her self-imposed retirement in 1941 at the height of her popularity. He draws on interviews, letters, and newly accessible M-G-M production files to trace each film from story conference to premiere, providing new insights into Garbo’s surprising career moves, unconventional working methods, and stormy relationships with Louis B. Mayer, John Gilbert, Mercedes de Acosta, Salka Viertel, Marlene Dietrich, and others.

Name at birth: Greta Lovisa Gustafsson Greta Garbo was an enigmatic superstar of silent films and early Hollywood "talkies" until her surprising retirement at age 36. She was discovered in Sweden and moved to America under contract to MGM Studios, where she played aloof, dramatic beauties in films like Flesh and The Devil (1926) and Mysterious Lady (1928). She became a star and made the transition to talking pictures: Anna Christie (1930) was promoted with the famous tag line "Garbo Talks!" In the 1930s she played doomed title characters like Mata Hari (1932) and Anna Karenina (1935) and was a pensive ballerina in the 1932 Oscar-winner Grand Hotel , where she uttered the famous line "I want to be alone." She changed styles a bit for the 1939 Ernst Lubitsch satire Ninotchka , playing a drab Soviet envoy transformed by a Parisian romance. She stopped making films in 1941, refused all attempts to lure her back to Hollywood, and settled in New York City. She dropped from public life entirely, and her solitary nature combined with her earlier movie mystique earned her a reputation as a romantic recluse. Extra credit : Garbo never married, though she had a much-publicized relationship with her silent film co-star John Gilbert... Garbo was irritated by the famous quote attributed to her, and reportedly told friends, "I never said, 'I want to be alone.' I only said, 'I want to be left alone.' There is a world of difference."

When Mother first came to Hollywood, she immediately and politely sent Garbo some flowers and a note - she thought they could share some Swedish evenings: meatballs, aquavit, candles and relaxed conversation in their native tongue. Garbo sent a telegram accepting the invitation, but not until three months later, just as Mother was about to leave town. Mother told George Cukor, who was a friend of Garbo's, about it and Cukor laughed. "Of course, Greta wouldn't have sent the telegram unless she was certain you were leaving." Mother greatly admired Garbo, whose understated style of acting was the same as her own. They shared that kind of Swedish spare and spartan elegance, the purity and straightforwardness. One knows they didn't lie. But their mystery and vulnerability were blended differently: Mother had a great deal of the latter; Garbo was enigmatic, magnetic and cool.

Flesh and the Devil Queen Christina Camille Ninotchka ... Anna Karenina Flesh and the Devil - 1927 MGM Her first film with the then top romantic lead John Gilbert. Garbo is at her seductive best as a woman who causes a fued between two friends. Gilbert is an Austrian officer, falls for the married Garbo and kills her husband in a duel. Great film with a surprise ending. Back to top Queen Christina - 1933 MGM Probably Garbo's best film, with a haunting performance by the radiant star as 17th-century Swedish queen who relinquishes her throne for her lover (shown in a scene at right with actor Lewis Stoneas as her Chancelor). Garbo and Gilbert's love scenes together are truly memorable, as is the famous final shot. Don't miss this one. Back to top Camille - 1937 MGM Beautiful MGM production; in one of her most famous roles, Garbo is Dumas' tragic heroine who must sacrifice her own happiness in order to prove her love. Taylor is a bit stiff as Armand, but Daniell, Joan Brodel (Leslie) is a superb villain. Filmed before in 1915 (with Clara Kimball Young), 1917 (Theda Bara), and 1921 (Nazimova, with Rudolph Valentino as Armand).

Wise Guide All Library Pages What Greta Garbo actually said in the 1932 Oscar winner "Grand Hotel" was "I want to be let alone." Either way, the actress, born in 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden, would forever be as famous for her screen presence as for her reclusiveness, an image she burnished after retiring from films at the age of 36. Photographer Arnold Genthe shot this portrait of the screen legend in 1925. Genthe (1869-1942), in his autobiography, "As I Remember" (1936), is the chief source of information about his life. In it, he recounts a cosmopolitan upbringing in Berlin, Frankfurt, Korbach and Hamburg. His father, Hermann Genthe, was a professor of Latin and Greek and, later in life, founded and served as director of a gymnasium or preparatory school. Under his father's tutelage, young Arnold grew up well versed in topics from poetry to classical literature and was also an accomplished horseman. His father died when Genthe was 17, prompting his mother to take in foreign visitors as boarders. Genthe liked to say that he and his brothers learned 15 different modern and ancient languages between them. Genthe wished to become an artist. However, the distinguished German painter Adolph Menzel, his mother's cousin, discouraged the youth from studying art. Hoping to instead pursue a teaching career like that of his father, Genthe entered the university in Jena, where he earned a doctorate in classical philology and completed a dictionary of German slang.
