Prof. Asiya Malik MWF 1000-1050 This course examines Asian migration to the Americas from the 19th century to the presentfocusing primarily on South Asian migration but also encompassing the diverse experiences of at least two other Asian communities in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. Topics we will explore include race and racial policy in the U.S., issues of identity, youth and popular culture, transnational networks, marriage and kinship. Ethnographic case studies and films will highlight the myriad kinds of Asian migrants i.e., refugees, indentured and agricultural laborers, entrepreneurs, illegal migrants and those that have migrated for the purposes of marriage.
