And got paid for it. What a man! There was no nonsence with Clark Gable. He was rough, tough and ready for anything. And when it came to women...well, frankly, he didn't give a damn. But who would have guessed the King of Hollywood owed his early breaks as an actor to the care and encouragement of the women who wooed him?

Who is Clark Gable?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Clark Gable was a popular American film star in the 1930s, starring in It Happened One Night and Gone With the Wind , among many other films. His rugged features are well known and epitomize the sort of leading man who began to capture the public imagination in the 1930s and the war years. Clark Gable is often considered to be one of the greatest film stars of all time, and he still has a loyal following thanks to the many famous films he starred in. Clark Gable was born William Clark Gable in Ohio in 1901. His mother died before he turned one, and Clark Gable found himself under the care of relatives for several years before his father, an oil driller, came to take him back, having since remarried. In high school, Clark Gable dropped out to work for a tire factory and began to be interested in an acting career. Jennie Dunlap, his stepmother, encouraged Clark Gable to pursue his dreams and clearly played a large role in his young life. As Clark Gable began to explore his newfound interest in the stage, his stepmother died and he found himself back at home again. Clark Gable's father did not approve of a career in acting, and Clark Gable found himself working in the oil fields alongside his father, a job he despised. He worked in the oil fields for almost four years, until he received an inheritance from his grandfather at the age of 21 and decided to strike out on his own. He worked in a variety of menial jobs before once again attempting to build an acting career, moving to Hollywood in the early 1920s.

His Hollywood breakthrough came when he appeared as a gangster in the Joan Crawford vehicle Dance , Fools , Dance (1931). Gable's popularity continued to rise throughout the 30s with movies like Red dust It happened one night (1934) and Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). By the end of the decade he was known as the King. Wary of period films after flopping in the costume drama Parnell (1937) Gable at first declined the role of Rhett Butler in the Margaret Mitchell best-seller, Gone with the Wind When his wife died in 1942, Clark joined the airforce and received several medals for flying bombing missions over Germany. Affectionately known as the 'King of Hollywood', Clark Gable was the most recognized heartthrob of his day. Yet the future Tinseltown he-man had a less than stellar entry into the world, being mistaken for a girl on his birth certificate. William Clark Gable was born on 1 February 1901, in Cadiz, Ohio. Seven months later his mother died, leaving her infant to the care of a father who led a transient life as a wildcat oil driller. Still the pair survived and young Clark managed to scrape his way through school. Leaving high school at the age of sixteen he went to work with his father in the Oklahoma oil fields for several years before deciding to pursue a career in acting. Under the coaching of Josephine Dillon, whom he married in 1924, Gable worked persistently to develop his skills as an actor. He got work as an extra in several silent movies, but the solid roles he had hoped for failed to materialize. After just over 5 years of frustrated marriage, he and Dillon separated. At this stage of the game, Clark could easily have thrown in the acting towel - treating it as a bad decision that went hand in hand with a bad marriage. But he didn't. Persistence began to pay off with bit parts on Broadway. Then came the proverbial break. Relocating to Los Angeles he landed the role of a brutal killer in the stage production of "The Last Mile". His critically acclaimed performance led

Clark Gable Lyrics
The Postal Service
I was waiting for a cross-town train in the london underground
When it struck me that i've been waiting since birth to find
A love that would look and sound like a movie so i changed
My plans and rented a camera and a van and then i called you
"i need you to pretend that we are in love again" and you agreed to
I want so badly to believe that "there is truth, that love is real"
And i want life in every word to the extent that it's absurd
I greased the lens and framed the shot using a friend as my stand-in
The script it called for rain but it was clear that day so we faked it
The marker snapped and i yelled "quiet on the set" And then called "action!" And i kissed you in a stye that clark gable would have admired (i thought it classic) I want so badly to believe that "there is truth, that love is real" And i want life in every word to the extent that it's absurd I know you're wise beyond your years, but do you ever get the fear That your perfect verse is just a lie you tell yourself to help you get by?

Two security guards rushed her out of a side entrance and told her never to come back! Myrna was paired with Clark Gable in Test Pilot and Too Hot to Handle, both in 1938, to capitalize on their popularity. Cause of Death - Heart Attack.
When MGM head Louis B. Mayer decided that Gable was getting difficult and ungrateful, he got a brilliant idea: loan Gable out to the lower-rank Columbia studio; that would teach him a lesson. The result: Gable won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his 1934 performance in the film It Happened One Night. He returned to MGM a bigger star than ever.
In 1930, Clark and Josephine Dillon were granted a divorce. A few days later, he married Texas socialite Ria Franklin Prentiss Lucas Langham. After moving to California, they had to be married again in 1931, possibly due to differences in state legal requirements.
Despite his reluctance at the time to appear in the role, Gable is best known for his performance as Rhett Butler in the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. At the time, Gable was wary of potentially disappointing a public who had decided no one else could play the part. A few years before, Gable had also earned an Academy Award nomination for his role as Fletcher Christian in 1935's Mutiny on the Bounty. In addition, Gable was one of the few actors to play the lead in three films that won an Academy Award for Best Picture. Decades later, Gable would say that whenever his career would start to fade, a re-release of Gone With the Wind would instantly revive everything, and he continued as a top leading man for the rest of his life.
