A Tribute to Clark Gable
William Clark Gable was born in Cadiz, Ohio on February 1, 1901, making February 1, 2001 the centennial of his birth. This article was originally written in July, 2000, and was updated several times since then, including on the centennial of his birth in 2001. For a high school dropout with big ears whose mother died when he was a baby and whose first MGM screen test wasn't exactly a raging success, Clark Gable ended up doing pretty well for himself. That's assuming you think starring in the most popular film of all time and being named "King of Hollywood" can be called doing pretty well!

Did clark gable precipitate a decline in undershirt sales in 1934?

The Shirt off His Back
Claim: Sales of men's undershirts declined sharply after actor Clark Gable appeared bare-chested in the 1934 film It Happened One Night
Status: Undetermined.
Examples:

[Wooten, 1995]
Gable's most vital contribution to my carefree charm came five years before his trademark role - and 19 years before I was born - in "It Happened One Night."
Gable, in what was then considered a racy scene with Claudette Colbert, took his shirt off to reveal a bare chest. America gasped: Where is his undershirt?
In AMC's "The Hollywood Fashion Machine," host Jacqueline Bisset recalls the impact of that disrobing: "The underwear industry was literally paralyzed."
Geoffrey Beene adds: "When Gable, in that famous scene, took off his shirt and he had no undershirt on, he suddenly made all sorts of men realize, 'Why do I have to wear an undershirt if Clark Gable doesn't wear an undershirt?' "
Freed from the unneeded garment that bound them, American men found one-shirt-at-a-time happiness. [Gottschalk, 1995]

Clark Gable For nearly thirty years, Clark Gable was "the King" of Hollywood. Female fans swooned, male admirers were made envious of his unaffected masculinity. Through jaunty, self-assured performances in films like It Happened One Night San Francisco and Gone With the Wind , he carved a niche for himself as the quintessential American movie star. The play is set on the Nevada location of Gable's last picture, The Misfits . While waiting for his perennially tardy co-star Marilyn Monroe to arrive on the set, Gable reminisces about his Horatio Alger life and career, touching on his stormy relationship with his oil wildcatter father, his marriages to older women, his numerous affairs and his great love, wife Carole Lombard, who died in a 1942 plane crash...a tragedy from which Gable never recovered. "Insightful", "funny", and "racy" are words that audiences have used to describe Michael B. Druxman's GABLE. Return to: The Hollywood Legends Lombard Jolson Tracy ... LE FastCounter

39. Clark Gable, King Of The Movies At Classic Movie Favorites
A site about great classic star of 1930 s to 1960 s, clark gable.
http://www.classicmoviefavorites.com/gable/
what's new bio films clips ... Classic Movie Favorites focus is on films from the 1930's to 1960's. During this time, Gable was at the height of his career and you can't try to describe this period without including a reference to him. At the time, the studios were all powerful and, although Clark would say he was somewhat of a pawn in their game, he certainly had a great and full life and career. This was mainly because of his influence at his home studio of MGM. Although, he worked very hard to achieve his fame, he certainly benefited by his determination. Probably best known for playing Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind , his career spanned from silent films until the 1960's. He worked continuously until the very end of his life and his last film, The Misfits , although tragic in helping to bring on his early death at 59, is one of his best. I hope you will browse through this site and learn more about this remarkable man. I've compiled over 500 photos, a biography and lots of trivia that I hope you will enjoy. Lots of new DVD's of Gable films available, click here to see them!

Clark Gable Menu Home Films Awards Videos ... Email William Clark Gable was born February 1, 1901 in Cadiz, Ohio. His mother died when he was seven months old. At sixteen he quit high school, went to work in an Akron tire factory, and decided to become an actor after seeing the play "The Bird of Paradise". He toured in stock companies, worked oil fields and sold ties.In 1923,Clark married Josephine Dillon, an acting teacher 11 years his senior. Gable worked as an movie extra and unskilled stage actor while he waited for better parts to come along. His marriage to Joesphine was going in a downward spiral and in 1927 they divorced. After bit parts he returned to theatre, becoming lifelong friends with Lionel Barrymore. After several failed screen tests (Barrymore and Zanuck) he was signed in 1930 by MGM's Irving Thalberg. Joan Crawford asked for him as co-star in Dance, Fools, Dance (1931) and the public loved him manhandling Norma Shearer in Free Soul, A (1931) the same year. His unshaven love-making with braless Jean Harlow in Red Dust (1932) made him MGM's most important star. The studio punished him for refusing an assignment; he was farmed out to Columbia where he won an Oscar for It Happened One Night (1934). He returned to substantial roles at MGM, winning nominations for Fletcher Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind (1939). When his third wife Carole Lombard died in a plane crash returning from a War Bond drive, a grief-stricken Gable joined the Army Air Corps, out of movies for three years.
