William Clark Gable was born on February 1, 1901 in Cadiz, Ohio. The only child of William H. Gable, an oil driller and farmer, and Adeline Hershelman Gable, both of German ancestry. When Clark was seven months old his mother died suddenly and Clark was left in the care of his grandparents until the age of two at which time his father remarried and moved the family to Hopedale, Ohio. His stepmother was Jennie Dunlap. She loved Clark very much and raised him as her own. Clark idolized her and later in life described her as "one of the most tender human beings I've ever known". Clark dropped out of High School in his third year, under his father's protest, to work in a tire factory in Akron, Ohio with his best friend Andy Means. It was during this time that Clark fell in love with the theatre. He saw a production of "The Bird of Paradise" at the local playhouse and was so taken that he obtained an unsalaried position as a backstage call boy with the stock company During this time he worked in the lumberyards, sold men's ties, strung cables for the telephone company and fell hopelessly in love with an aspiring young actress named Franz Dorfler. They met while performing with the Astoria Stock Company in Oregon. The two quickly got engaged and Clark went to live with Franz and her family. She loved him but refused to marry him because he was penniless and so it wasn't long before Franz hit the road with another traveling theatre troupe, without Gable.

After Warren Harris's Clark Gable: A Biography (2005), David Bret's Clark Gable: Tormented Star (2007) is the latest one. I have not read it personally. It seems that it hasn't gotten favorable Amazon reviews. My favorite has always been Lyn Tornabene's Long live The King: A Biography of Clark Gable (1976) and a very well-research piece by Chrystopher J. Spicer - Clark Gable: Biography, Filmography, Bibliography (2002). Mr. Spicer was a professor from Australia, and met his wife in the Library while researching for the Gable book. One of Hollywood's most popular leading men of the 1930s and '40s, Clark Gable was nominated for three Best Actor Oscars over the course of his career and even became the first actor ever to win an Academy Award for a comedy performance when he won for IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934). But he earned his royal nickname when he won a popularity poll in 1936 and The New York Daily News crowned him King of Hollywood. (Incidentally, Myrna Loy was crowned queen at the same mock ceremony.) Gable with Jean Harlow in MGM 's RED DUST (1932), a steamy romance set on an Indochina rubber plantation. 14. Clark Gable: The Unforgettable King By Dina-Marie Kulzer

http://www.classichollywoodbios.com/clarkgable.htm
CLARK GABLE: THE UNFORGETTABLE KING By Dina-Marie Kulzer "A big spellbinder with a streak of good and a streak of mean," that's how Marjorie Main described the Gable character in Honky Tonk (1941). Brawny, Clark Gable with his piercing blue eyes, mischievous, dimpled grin and virile yet charming manner has held his audience of over two-hundred million people spellbound for more than half a century. Whether it be on the late, late show or in a revival movie house, Clark Gable's image lives on. William Clark Gable was born in Cadiz, Ohio, 1901, the son of oil driller Will Gable. His mother died while he was still an infant. Gable was raised by his much adored stepmother Jennie Dunlap Gable who encouraged his interest in the arts and theater. Gable's father was another matter entirely. Will Gable considered acting a "sissy" profession. Even at the height of Gable's success and fame his father still tried to talk him into going back to the oil fields. After a brief experience as a stage hand for John and Lionel Barrymore, Gable went to Oklahoma and worked with his father in the oil fields for two years. However, Gable preferred the smell of grease paint to that of oil and joined a small acting troupe.
