UKTV likes to recognise the greatest of British talents. On this occasion we salute Stephen Fry, one of the country's wittiest comedians. Who is Mr Fry? The son of inventor Alan Fry, Stephen grew up in Norfolk with his brother, Roger and sister, Jo. He attended both Uppingham School and Stout's Hill before heading to Queens College, Cambridge in 1979. Just before entering full time student life, though, Fry spent three months in Pucklechurch prison for credit card fraud. He finished his degree with a 2:1 in English in 1982. Just two years later Fry became a millionaire thanks to his rewrite of the musical "Me and My Girl" which also earned him a nomination for a Tony award. His career took off with a bang and throughout the 80's he worked in TV, radio and wrote a column in the Daily Telegraph. A familiar face without a doubt, probably better known for his parts in Blackadder, Jeeves and Wooster and now the voice of the Harry Potter movies narrator. Friends of old They say the best friends you make are at university. It seems to be the case for Fry and friends. At Cambridge Stephen was a member of the Cherubs drinking club, as well as a member of Footlights where he met Emma Thompson, Tony Slattery, Martin Bergmann, and Hugh Laurie. It was Emma Thompson who introduced Fry to Laurie and the pair embarked on a fruitful friendship and writing partnership in 1981. Their work made them a name at May Week, at the Edinburgh Festival, and even took them on a three month tour of Australia. The cooperation continued well into their careers and most notably with Jeeves and Wooster.

Stephen fry has a blog!
Yesssss!
Stephen is a major hero of mine. His cutting edge humour in the 80s [during which time by his own admission, he basically punched Hugh Laurie a lot] , his wonderful novels and his unapologetically intelligent and courageous television programmes have all been a source of delight for me.
In the same way as I would be happy to listen to an audiobook of the phone directory if Stephen was the narrator, I don't much care what he writes about in his blog. Just to watch the man string sentences together in the English language is going to be a joy.
His inaugural post is about smartphones. Happy reading

Stephen Fry Reviews Electric Toothbrush, HTML 5 Proposals
By Rob Beschizza Categories: Appliances Polymathic wit and Guardian gadget blogger Stephen Fry reviews an electric toothbrush and laments how WC3, the web standards group, is being pressured by Apple and Nokia to turn HTML 5 into corporate monkey markup language. The latter is annoying, the former, astonishing: "The the Oral-B®, Professional Care™ Triumph™ (with Wireless SmartGuide) Oral-B (”powered by Braun” ... is so over-engineered as almost to defy description. A base station, where sits and charges the toothbrush itself, transmits by radio to a receiving element. The receiver substation is a plastic cartouche complete with obligatory LCD screen called a SmartGuide (phrases compressed with UpperCaseLetters such as this are DeRigueur for today’s sad MarketingPerson), which gives a reading of how long you’ve brushed, and how long you’ve got to go in each of the quadrants of the mouth... Although all this wireless tosh is senseless and functionally meaningless, I love it. Brushing my teeth bores me to tears and anything - anything - that relieves the tedium of the procedure is good." He then demands a treadmill with a pursuit game integrated into the display.

at 2:16 pm Anyway thanks for posting this. I am a huge fan of Stephen Fry (have you read his autobiography? very insightful). He is amazingly talented and I still maintain that Blackadder is the funniest thing ever to appear on TV. That such a funny man is also unbelievably intelligent and nice is a bonus. minxlj

Stephen Fry shares one of my little bugbears
We’ll answer that vital point momentarily, as they say here in the US. I do enjoy hearing American waiters using that word; as you enter a restaurant they might say, “I’ll be with you momentarily”. They are usually righter than they know: a fleeting vision that flickers before your eyes and then is gone. I suppose ‘in a moment’ takes too long to say in their busy lives and ‘presently’ is English English to the point of being more or less flagrantly homosexual, so ‘momentarily’ it is. The stage set is a common room at Hogwarts with a fireplace surrounded by framed pictures and a huge moon suspended from the ceiling. There are giant screens on either side of the stage for video questions filmed by MSN from around the world.

Stephen Fry Detailed Biography
Stephen John Fry (born 24 August 1957) is an English comedian, writer, actor, novelist, filmmaker and television personality. The former comedy collaborator of Hugh Laurie, his renowned intellect has most recently led to the success of television panel game QI, of which he is host. Fry was born in Hampstead, London, the son of Alan Fry, a British scientist, and Marianne Neumann, an Austrian of Jewish descent. He has an elder brother, Roger, and a younger sister, Joanna. He grew up in the village of Booton near Reepham, Norfolk, having moved to the countryside when very young. Fry briefly attended Gresham's School, Holt, before going on to Stout's Hill Preparatory School, Uppingham School, Rutland, where he joined Fircroft house. He was expelled from Uppingham when he was fourteen, and subsequently from the Paston School. At seventeen, following his failure at Norfolk College of Arts and Technology, Fry absconded with a credit card stolen from a family friend, and as a result spent three months in Pucklechurch Prison on grounds of fraud. Following his release he resumed education at Norwich City College, promising administrators that he would study rigorously to sit the Cambridge Entrance Exams. He passed well enough to gain a scholarship before going on to Queens' College, Cambridge.
