How we work: Stephen Fry, actor/writer
Takes on other jobs when writing an article or review, or acting, but cannot when writing a novel: "I don’t take another job. I don’t do anything. I go up to my house in the country and pull out all the plugs, virtually. I just do it nonstop until I’m finished . I envy writers who can write on planes and take a break for a week and then get back to it. I have to get into a sort of zone. [...] With writing, I don’t know what it is. I just have to get into a complete world. It has something to do with an inability to concentrate, which is the absolute bottom line of writing." Stephen Fry loving the Glofish x800
It was great to see in today's Guardian Stephen Fry's article on Smartphone devices and particularly his thoughts on the Glofish X800. Stephen doesn't seem to be the greatest fan of Windows Mobile.. Now, I have to say I'm not a fan of Windows for mobiles - all those maddeningly small menus, submenus and fiddly nested commands torment me almost beyond endurance, as do the horrors of trying to synchronise with anything other than a PC. Were it not for Missing Sync's suite of programs that allow powerful and controllable syncing between Macs and mobile operating systems, I'd be in a home by now. For all that, I've lived for weeks using HTC and Palm devices that run WM5 and WM6, and I happily concede that Microsoft's cut-down OS does have strengths. In his article though he is reviewing the Glofish X800 and seems to really like it.

Filed under: Resident Snapshot Arts and Culture SL Blogs If you're not sure who Stephen Fry is, can I direct your attention to his blog and his wikipedia page. He's a quite famous comedic and serious actor, appearing in Blackadder amongst other famous shows, and he's also famous for his erudition as the host of QI.
I've been a fan of his blog, which is relatively new, and his "blessays" and "blisertations" - his blog is not something to skim quickly, but is clever, fun, and interesting as well as blogging his life as an early adopter of technology - something dear to the hearts of many of us.
I have the thinnest of excuses for posting this. In his latest entry (also printed in the Guardian on Saturday) he admits to having a private existence in SL too. I'm not going to try to expose him further than this, but to say a public hello to him. Tags: blog celebrity Second-Life Stephen-Fry ... Comments [2]

Stephen Fry on Electric Toothbrushes
Posted by Joel Johnson , December 27, 2007 5:25 AM permalink There comes a time in every gadget blogger's life when he must write about an electric toothbrush. You either accept the fate with a dingy smile or explode in a clatter of gnashed, flying teeth. Fortunately for us, the young Stephen Fry has approach his time with the "the Oral-B®, Professional Care™ Triumph™ (with Wireless SmartGuide) Oral-B (”powered by Braun”)" with aplomb. A base station, where sits and charges the toothbrush itself, transmits by radio to a receiving element. The receiver substation is a plastic cartouche complete with obligatory LCD screen called a SmartGuide (phrases compressed with UpperCaseLetters such as this are DeRigueur for today’s sad MarketingPerson), which gives a reading of how long you’ve brushed, and how long you’ve got to go in each of the quadrants of the mouth, according to “professional” brushing standards recommended by dentists. It also tells you the time and rewards you with a smiley face when you’re done. Sigh. I think I’m in love. Why I love smart toothbrushes and loathe internet plug-ins [StephenFry.com]

Stephen Fry blogs smartphones
UK actor and comedian Stephen Fry is blogging now, and his first (lengthy) post is about the iPhone and other smartphones. It's hilarious and insightful, and it makes me wonder why he didn't start doing this sooner. It's almost as if Douglas Adams is back among us. Bless you Mr. Fry: All the big guns want an iPhone killer. Even I, mad for all things Apple as I am, want an iPhone killer. I want smart digital devices to be as good as mankind’s ingenuity can make them. I want us eternally to strive to improve and surprise. Bring on the iPhone killers. Bring them on.
I have, over the past twenty years been passionately addicted to all manner of digital devices, Mac-friendly or not; I have gorged myself on electronic gismos, computer accessories, toys, gadgets and what-have-yous of all descriptions, but most especially what are now known as SmartPhones. PDAs, Wireless PIMs, call them what you will. My motto is:
I have never seen a SmartPhone I haven’t bought.

A bit of Fry, no Laurie Here’s the majority of the cutting-room-floor material from my interview with Stephen Fry . When I was initially editing the piece for publication, I accidentally saved an edited file over the raw file, losing another 2,000 words or so in the process, so there may be another cutting-room collection at some point if I find time to go back to the original, untouched raw file, but that material is hugely unpolished and I’m not going to be able to get to it for a while. Still, this collection of cut question-and-response sets is almost as long as the interview we actually ran, so perhaps it'll do for now.

Stephen Fry: Why Should it be Difficult for a Man to Kiss Another Man? Posted Jan 8th 2008 3:02PM by Monika Bartyzel
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy Newsstand I always get a kick out of hearing Stephen Fry's take on different matters. There's nothing like usually-solid rationale mixed with humor that's why dudes like Stephen Colbert are so big. In March of last year , I shared his views about America's obsession with British accents. He pondered the possibility that Americans are fooled into thinking performances by British actors are good because of their accents. Now the BBC reports that he's taken on a more serious topic and is giving his two cents on this current tendency to congratulate straight people for taking on gay roles. You know Jake and Heath (or any other actor) is lauded for daring to take on the role, as if it is some super-challenging deed.
According to Fry: "People say: 'Ooh, how brave of you.' Why should it be difficult for a man to kiss another man?" He goes on to discuss the fact that gay actors aren't called brave for kissing women, and continues: "It wouldn't be at all difficult for me to kiss a woman I'll kiss a frog if you like. It's difficult to ride bareback backwards while unicycling, but to kiss someone isn't difficult." You can always count on Fry for a humorous, yet rational, take on an issue. There is a definite stigma attached to male-male sexuality in any form. Ladies can kiss and cavort until the cows come home, but once two stubbly faces smooch each other, all hell breaks loose.

Executive summary: Jeeves on Jeeves and Wooster In the United Kingdom, Stephen Fry is seen as a veritable renaissance man a successful actor, comedian, novelist, playwright, and columnist. Best known for his appearances on television and in films, he is tall and large, funny-faced, and openly gay. In America, Fry is best known as Jeeves from his 1990s sitcom version of P. G. Wodehouse 's Jeeves and Wooster , which aired in America on PBS. He also played Oscar Wilde in Wilde , and had small roles in Gosford Park and A Civil Action . Sharp-eyed viewers may remember his tiny part in A Fish Called Wanda Fry's father was a physicist and inventor, and his mother and her Jewish family had immigrated to England prior to World War II. In his mid-teens, when he noticed he was drawn to boys instead of girls, Fry started getting into trouble. He was expelled from three schools, and attempted suicide at sixteen. At seventeen, he was found guilty of credit card fraud and spent three months in prison. He studied English at Cambridge, where his classmates included Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson . It was she who introduced Fry to his long-time comic partner Hugh Laurie , who was Thompson's boyfriend at the time.

A Cineman Syndicate feature WILDE: INTERVIEW WITH STEPHEN FRY
* By Prairie Miller * Matching wits with his character, comic actor Stephen Fry takes up the enormous challenge of reincarnating the immortal Oscar Wilde in the Brian Gilbert directed movie Wilde. Fry, who is more commonly known as the serene Jives on TV's Jives And Wooster, amazes as a mirror image of Wilde in flesh and mind in the film. Also on hand in Wilde is Tom Wilkinson, who didn't mind going to extremes in The Full Monty, but does a fierce turn in Wilde as Lord Queensberry, the man most responsible for Wilde's public condemnation and downfall after being charged with homosexuality. Fry talked about his lifelong fascination with the character he has played more than once. He also gave some thought to the ongoing controversy surrounding both the man and the movie. PRAIRIE MILLER : When did you first become fascinated by Wilde? STEPHEN FRY: I became aware of him as a very young boy. My mother read his children's stories to me. I was entranced by that. He was just sort of always there, like the queen, or the Beatles. Something that was in your head all the time. I just always knew he was around. He caused a kind of devotion where everyone agreed who sat around a dinner table with him, that when you got up you felt ten feet tall. You thought he was brilliant, but he didn't make you feel less brilliant. It was the kind of brilliance that can change the colors of things, and make the world suddenly look like a more remarkable place. It can make you participate in that person's intelligence. That's what Wilde had, a huge generosity of spirit.

Stephen Fry is to talk openly for the first time about his battle with manic depression for a BBC Two programme. Fry, who said he felt suicidal when he walking out of the West End show Cell Mates in February 1995, will talk candidly about his experiences of living with the condition. His comments will come in two hour-long shows he is presenting on how celebrities cope with mental health problems. He has already travelled to the US to interview actors and comedians about how it affects their work, TV industry website Broadcastnow.com reports. Fry has already interviewed actress Carrie Fisher, who has battled with bipolar disorder since her teens. The shows, being made by independent production house IWC Media, are due to be broadcast in May. Click here to read about the most trusted and tested St. John's Wort formulation in America.

Stephen Fry Reviews Oral B Professional Care Triumph, Loves It
Some of us may dabble in being funny to go along with our tech knowledge, but professional comedian Stephen Fry actually knows a thing about both fields. Today he reviews the Oral-B Professional Care Triumph, which has a special tech that allows it to wirelessly show how long you've been brushing each corner of your mouth and rate it according to what dentists recommend. He loves it. He also loves the idea of turning something mundane into something exciting via technology, and wants it to go further. He says: I want a treadmill that presents on screen a reality game that interacts with your exercise: an adventure in which you chase villains, rescue damsels or solve puzzles - this is where technology should be headed so far as humdrum chores are concerned. Come on, you eccentric British software geniuses and game designers. Help me to a brilliant white smile and slim fitness the fun way. YES! Someone make a Running Hero game for Xbox 360 right now, complete with $300 treadmill attachment. We'd totally buy that if we could simulate running on screen, as opposed to the treadmill workout we do now where we just stare into the nearby lake and wished we were drowning instead. [

Phrase Had his only contribution to literature been Lord Emsworth and Blandings Castle, his place in history would have been assured. Had he written of none but Mike and Psmith, he would be cherished today as the best and brightest of our comic authors. If Jeeves and Wooster had been his solitary theme, still he would be hailed as The Master. If he had given us only Ukridge, or nothing but recollections of the Mulliner family, or a pure diet of golfing stories, Wodehouse would nonetheless be considered immortal. That he gave us all those and more - so much more - is our good fortune and a testament to the most industrious, prolific and beneficent author ever to have sat down, scratched his head and banged out a sentence. When Hugh Laurie and I had the extreme honour and terrifying responsibility of being asked to play Bertie Wooster and Jeeves in a series of television adaptations, we were aware of one huge problem facing us. Wodehouse's three great achievements are Plot, Character and Language, and the greatest of these by far is Language. Wodehouse's language lives and breathes in its written, printed form. It oscillates privately between the page and the reader. The moment it is read out or interpreted it is compromised. Our only hope in making the television series was that the stories and characters might provide enough pleasure on their own to inspire the viewer to pick up a book and encounter The Real Thing.

Stephen Fry
Roger Law, 2005 Notably tall and prominently articulate, Stephen Fry is long of limb, superior of mien, natty of suit and famed for the easy erudition of his conversation. He sports a double first (with honours) in comedy and memory and his task on the show is to usher the contestants gently but firmly into the brick wall of ignorance. This done, and laughs had, he thoughtfully points out the little cracks in the brickwork that allow you to climb up and see the quite interesting view. After honing his performance and writing skills in the Cambridge Footlights, Stephen teamed up with Hugh Laurie to appear on our screens in three series of whimsical sketchery entitled . He has written several very well received books including The Liar , half an autobiography Moab is my Washpot and more recently a scholarly but friendly guide to understanding and writing poetry entitled The Ode Less Travelled You will also have seen him in Blackadder , four series of and the film Wilde , heard him reading Harry Potter and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy , and generally enjoyed him in a pleasantly diverse stream of film and television incarnations.
