With His Eye on a Senate Seat, Comedian Al Franken Says It's Time to Get Serious
By Paul Farhi Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, December 17, 2007; Page C01 BECKER, Minn. Al Franken, U.S. Senate candidate, is telling a joke: "A satirist . . . cuts through the baloney and gets to the truth," says Franken, here wooing Madison Firebaugh and her parents, Kim Norris and John Firebaugh, in Nashwauk, Minn. So Franken told her: He spotted his future wife, Franni, across the room at a freshman mixer in college. He asked her to dance. They talked. He bought her a ginger ale. Afterward, he walked her back to her dorm, where he asked for a date. End of story. His daughter, Franken says, wrote up the innocent tale this way: "My dad asked my mom to dance, bought her a drink and took her home."

During the Bush years, satire was one of the Democrats’ most potent weapons. But Al Franken’s earnest—sometimes tearful—campaign for senator raises the question: Can politics and comedy co-exist?

(Photo: Chris Buck) A l Franken looks sort of like a cartoon bullfrog. He has substantial jowls and wears large round spectacles and stands slightly pitched forward with his butt up and out, as if at any moment he might make a little cartoon leap forward. Only it would be in slow motion, because there’s a drowsiness to Franken’s physicality. His lips appear particularly animated—the way he holds his mouth is often half of what makes his jokes funny. For example, a few months ago, when Franken was on the Late Show

Save Al Franken! [Aug 12, 2003] Today I'd planned to continue the delightful narrative of my run for the California governor's mansion. In the media, there can only be one story, and this is it, pal. But then came word that my services were, once again, needed. The Fox News Channel has sued political satirist Al Franken to stop him from using the words "fair and balanced" in the title of his new book, scheduled to publish next month. The suit claims that the subtitle is "likely to cause confusion among the public about whether Fox News has authorized or endorsed the book and about whether Franken is affiliated with FNC." Good lord. Who among the five, possibly ten percent of the American people who could recognize Franken in a lineup would think that he's affiliated with the Fox News Channel? The man stands politically to the left of every major entertainment figure except Michael Moore and maybe Janeane Garofalo. We all know that this suit is hogwash. We also know that Al Franken can defend himself, and that his publisher can defend him, too. Anyone who has been a recurring cast member on Saturday Night Live for nearly 30 years doesn't need much help calling attention to his cause. Nonetheless, it's the policy of this website to rise to the aid of satire whenver it's threatened, even if the threatened satirist is three links above it on the comedy food chain. Therefore, I declare this Friday a day of emergency protest.

Anyway, on to the other questions... MY BROTHER

This gets pretty wonky, so brace yourself. Franken says I make a "mistake" when I write of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (italics to highlight the point in contention), "The generous federal subsidy encouraged states to maximize their health benefits, essentially extending a federal entitlement to children living in families with incomes roughly 200 percent above the poverty line ." But this is absolutely correct. It is Franken who is mistaken, and apparently doesn't have the slightest idea what he is writing about. Such programs often apply to families with incomes 200 percent above the poverty line. It is a way to ensure that they reach the working poor. "200 percent of poverty" is, therefore, pretty standard public-policy argot, but Franken seems never to have heard of it, and insists that I'm wrong that SCHIP applies to families in that category. The error, however, is his: According to the American Medical Association, "SCHIP coverage is now available in 38 states and the District of Columbia for children up to age 19 whose family income is at or above 200 percent of the federal poverty level."

On Letterman, Al Franken Jokes About Execution for Treason of Rove, Libby and Bush
By Brent Baker "And so basically, what it looks like is going to happen is that Libby and Karl Rove are going to be executed” because “outing a CIA agent is treason,” left-wing author and radio talk show host Al Franken asserted Friday night, to audience laughter, on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman . Franken qualified his hard-edged satire: "Yeah. And I don't know how I feel about it because I'm basically against the death penalty, but they are going to be executed it looks like." Franken later suggested that President Bush is at risk of receiving the same punishment, since Karl Rove likely told him what he did, but he added a caveat: “I think, by the way, that we should never ever, ever, ever execute a sitting President." Updated Sunday night with video.

Among his specialities was impersonating the likes of Henry Kissinger. But something has happened to Al Franken in the age of Bush - he got serious. This is a funny film about the seriousness of a funny man. Franken cannot decide these days whether he wishes to be a politician - a liberal of course - or whether there is anything left in the world about which to tell jokes. He runs around America wondering about this, and, yes, even meets Henry Kissinger who he impersonates to his face.

Election campain hits 'Best Small Town in America'
5 hours ago ELKO, Nevada (AFP) — The glitz and glamour of a US presidential election campaign steamrolled into this snow-bound town of Elko on Friday, with top Democrats scrambling for votes in the self-styled "Best Small Town in America." An hour-long plane journey and a world away from the bright lights of the Las Vegas strip, this remote town of around 20,000 people has become an important stop on the campaign trail ahead of Saturday's Nevada caucuses. As the seat of the third most populous county, Elko has assumed added significance in the caucuses, which are attracting more attention than usual because of their earlier slot in the election calendar.
