: And now, "Weekend Update", with the "Weekend Update" news team. Here are anchorpersons Bill Murray and Jane Curtain.
Jane Curtin : Good evening, I'm Jane Curtin. Here now, the news.
Our top story tonight: Senator Edward Kennedy's wife, Joan, who has lived alone for the past two years, said this week that if her husband were elected President she would live in the White House. Kennedy, informed of her decision, immediately withdrew from the race.
With greater shortages than expected, due to the cutoff of Iranian oil imports, a revival of the odd-even gas rationing plan is anticipated in many states. However, because of negative reaction voiced by a majority of citizens, the odd-even plan has been modified, and will only be in effect on every other day.

Jane Curtin : And, an embarrassing note: 19-year-old Anita Dark of St. Petersburg, Florida, filed a paternity suit this week, and has claimed that the father is Weekend Update Sportscaster Chico Escuela. Ms. Dark alleged that she became intimate with Mr. Escuela last Spring, when Chico was in Florida attempting a comeback with the New York Mets. On advice from his lawyer, Chico can't comment on Anita Dark, but he is here this week to tell us about sports. Welcome home, Chico!
Chico Escuela : Thank you, Hane. Basebal bin berra berra good to me. Anita Dark bin berra berra good to me.. but Chico can't talk about it. In sports, Charles White won the.. how do you say.. Heisman Trophy. Now, look at this run. Charles White is the best football player. He runs with authority. Chico run

I'M B-B-BACK!
Stuart's Eighties Flashback Gets Road Test
Even if Al Franken's senatorial campaign fails to take off this year, we can at least thank him for the nostalgic trip down memory lane. After all, when was the last time you thought about Max Headroom or New Coke?
Whether he made the connection is unclear, but our friend Stuart is road- testing a campaign slogan that sounds suspiciously like Max's circa-1980s pitch for New Coke. Remember that one?
From the Duluth News Tribune
Al Franken urges local Democrats to ‘catch wave’ of his candidacy
Franken spoke briefly with Duluth Mayor Don Ness, who made a short appearance and left before the speeches. Franken encouraged him to work for light rail service that would connect Duluth and the Twin Cities, a topic he also touched on in his speech.
“It would be so exciting to get rail between Duluth and the Twin Cities,” Franken said. “It would be nice to get rail, and it would be nice to get high-speed rail.”

Senator Franken?
He's good enough, he's smart enough, but doggone it, will people vote for him? To find out, Al Franken is moving his radio show back home to Minnesota to get ready to run against Sen. Norm Coleman. By David Paul Kuhn Pages 1 Then the news breaks: German conservative Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is the next pope. "It's an inside job," Sarducci moans. "You won't see the pope involved in local politics in Poland, no more, it's going to be Germany. You are going to see the wall go back up." Franken is cracking up. But the normally outspoken comedian won't comment about the new pope. "As a Jew," he explains later, "it's none of my business." It's a rare reticent moment for Franken. His job is to make everything his business. The restraint seems oddly decorous for the man who once, to his face, accused Fox News star Bill O'Reilly of lying about his credentials at a Book Expo, leading an infuriated O'Reilly to scream, "Shut up, shut up!" But Franken is tiring of merely being a provocateur. Although in just a year his show captured 53 stations nationwide, including eight of the top 10 markets, the most recognizable face of Air America Radio is becoming restless, and ready for a new challenge.

Al Franken's Ad
The satirist's new spot in his Minnesota campaign for the U.S. Senate is both sugary and irreverent. It doesn't quite match the creativity of the ads that Paul Wellstone ran in 1990 to score a surprise win, and Franken's campaign doesn't have the renegade quality that propelled Jesse Ventura into the governor's office in 1998. But Franken apparently has to tread lightly on the humor to be taken seriously in the state, which is a bit exhausted by celebrity candidates after the Ventura experience. Text edited based on delivery. I was all set to give a speech today entitled, "American Jihad." But after receiving several complaints, I've decided instead to give a less controversial speech entitled: "The Case for Profiling Young Arab Men." Before I go any further, I would like to thank the University and President Summers for conferring upon me an honorary degree, an honorary doctorate, in Afro-American Studies. And especially for offering me a chair as a professor in that Departmentan offer I hereby most heartily accept. I don't know much about Afro-American Studies. But I can assure you that I can use the summer to get myself up to speed. But seriously, it is an honor to speak here today to you, the graduating class of 2002, and to congratulate all of youfor getting into Harvard in the first place. Because let's face it, once you get in here, as long as you don't kill someone or embezzle $100,000 from your student organization, you're going to graduate. And to those of you who are graduating with honorscongratulations on doing some of the reading and on going to many of your classes, and getting notes from friends on the classes you didn't go to, and on handing in most of your papers on time. Way to go! Good work!
