  • Al Franken: Profile Al Franken is an Emmy Award-winning television writer and producer, New York Times bestselling author, and Grammy- winning comedian. In 1975, Franken was part of the original writing staff that created the groundbreaking late night show. Franken remained with the original show until 1980 and then returned in 1985. He stayed for another 10 years, leaving after the 1994-95 season. Franken received four Emmys for his writing on SNL and a fifth for producing. He also won recognition for his on-camera work, first as half of the comedy team of "Franken and Davis", then for his "Al Franken Decade" persona. He also was recognized for such characterizations as the one-man mobile uplink unit and Stuart Smalley, the new age cable TV host. Smalley was the subject of Franken's first book, I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough and Doggone It, People Like Me , which was published in 1992. It provided the basis for a movie that Franken wrote and starred in for Paramount Pictures. The 1995 movie, "Stuart Saves His Family", was directed by Harold Ramis and received "two thumbs up" from Siskel and Ebert.

- Al Franken From his USO tour in Iraq, to the studios of liberal radio network Air America and on the campaign trail, filmmakers Nick Doob and Chris Hegedus are granted entre to one of the most effective political satirists of our time. Franken fearlessly confronts pundits and politicians, blurring the boundaries between political satire and impassioned citizenry. Featuring a host of beltway big mouths including Ann Coulter, Michael Moore, Al Gore, John Kerry, Robert Kennedy Jr., Sean Hannity, William Safire, Karen Hughes and Henry Kissinger, the film is an hilarious look behind the front lines of the media wars during the most contentious election in recent history. But ultimately, the film is a personal drama of transformation, as Al Franken leaves his comedy days behind and moves from his seat in the sidelines to become a contender inside the political ring. Last May, as I left the stage after debating Ann Coulter in Hartford, my wife Franni took me aside and whispered: "The poor thing." Last Monday, after my debate with Coulter at the Universal Amphitheatre in L.A., there was no sympathy from Franni. Just a strong sense of disgust. Because Coulter had chosen a strange strategy. Offend the audience and then act the victim. The event was part of a lecture series sponsored by the University of Judaism. The previous debate had featured Newt Gingrich and John Edwards before a crowd of about 5000 subscribers. About 5500 had gathered for me and Ann. The extra five hundred presumably were fans of mine and of Ann's. Before the debate, there was a dinner for about 75 sponsors - mainly middle-aged-to- older Jewish couples. Between dinner and dessert Ann and I were to each make three minutes of remarks. I had planned to open with my usual at such Jewish events: "I'm going to start by answering the question I've been asked most tonight - Yes, I've had enough to eat."

Franken shows his support for campus strikers
The politician said fair wages and treatment are important factors in motivating workers.
    By Betsy Graca
l Franken visited campus Monday to support the University workers on strike. Franken said supporting labor unions and workers is one of his top billings as he gears up for the U.S. Senate race. Stephen Maturen Al Franken, democratic candidate for Senate, speaks Monday to AFSCME strikers on the steps of Walter Library. Franken said supporting labor unions and workers is one of his top billings as he gears up for the U.S. Senate race. Franken said he feels that a high turnover rate can be damaging to a University and the motivation for workers to stay in one place for many years is due to appropriate wages and treatment. Students came to hear Franken and get a chance to shake his hand. Franken said higher education has been a concern of his before the strike, and it would continue to be after the dispute is resolved. He expressed a concern that the University is moving backward.

Klein nailed on falsehoods in Al Franken Show grilling
Hosts Al Franken and Katherine Lanpher, and guest Joe Conason confronted author Edward Klein on the many factual errors, distortions, and misleading claims in his attack book on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), The Truth About Hillary (Sentinel, 2005). On the June 24 edition of the Al Franken Show on Air America Radio, Klein acknowledged his falsehood in portraying the chronology of the reporting of Clinton's Jewish step-grandfather and her controversial meeting with Suha Arafat, first noted by Media Matters for America . He also admitted that he had never seen Clinton's chief of staff Melanne Verveer (whose name he misspelled in the book), although he described her appearance as "mannish-looking." But he refused to retract other false claims when confronted by Franken, Conason and Lanpher. Following is a transcript of the interview in its entirety: LANPHER: You're listening to the Al Franken Show . I'm Katherine Lanpher. FRANKEN: And I'm Al Franken. 38. Al Franken For Senate | A Message From Al Franken
Hi, I’m al franken. I m running for the United States Senate here in Minnesota. I d like to talk to you about why I m running. I’m not a typical politician.
http://franken.bluestatedigital.com/page/content/message
I want you to know: nothing means more to me than making government work better for the working families of this state, and over the next twenty months I look forward to proving to you that I take these issues seriously.
Today, however, I want to take a few moments to explain to you why I take these issues personally.
That was my childhood. I grew up in a hard-working middle class family just like many of yours. And as a middle-class kid growing up in Minnesota back then, I felt like the luckiest kid in the world. And I was.
Last year I traveled all over the state of Minnesota on behalf of Tim and other Democrats: from Waseca and Wabasha up to Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes, over to Bemidji and the Iron Range, from Duluth down to Albert Lea, I was in Hastings and all over the metro, up in St. Cloud a few times, eating a lot of beans and buns and burgers and maybe a few too many Dairy Queens along the way. But most importantly, I talked to Minnesotans and listened.
Your government should have your back. That should be our mission in Washington, the one FDR gave us during another challenging time: freedom from fear.
