Wednesday, January 03, 2007 MACUMBA SEXUAL (JESS FRANCO, 1983) MACUMBA SEXUAL was one of the first films that Franco made after he teamed up with Golden Productions; returning to Spain after working as a film maker for a good 15 years in other countries. Teaming up with Gold Productions allowed Franco to have complete freedom over his films; for once he didn't have to worry about any one's cinematic ideas except for his own. Not much actually happens in Macumba Sexual (plot wise), so I'll sum it up quite succinctly: Alice (Lina Romay, here billed as Candy Coster) and her boyfriend are vacationing on the Canary Islands. They spend their days lounging around in the sun and making love, while occasionally Alice's boyfriend works on his novel, which he's having trouble with. All is pretty much a peaceful paradise. However, Alice keeps having terrible nightmares that involve a tall, dark-skinned woman and her two pet "beasts" (a nude man and woman who crawl on all fours, kept on leashes). Every time she has the nightmare she tosses and turns, almost to the extent of a convulsion, almost always waking up with a scream.

Jess Franco's Count Dracula Mr. Cranky's rating: The obvious question that anybody should ask about watching yet another version of "Dracula" is "Why should I watch another version of Dracula?" Having not read "Dracula" in ages, I can't really comment on how true to the novel this particular adaptation might be, but let me say right up front, I couldn't care less. What I don't want to do is spend is twenty minutes watching Klaus Kinski flounder around in some room throwing feces at the wall. He plays R.M. Renfield and he's been rendered insane by the action of Dracula (Christopher Lee). If there's a point to having him in the movie, I don't know what it is, other than the irony of watching Kinski's "performance." The obvious question that anybody should ask about watching yet another version of "Dracula" is "Why should I watch another version of Dracula?" Well actually, there's no reason. Here, the answer seems to be one of three things: 1. Chrisopher Lee plays Dracula, 2. When he drinks the blood (mostly of Lucy (Soledad Miranda)) of his victims, he gets younger, and 3. The DVD seems to have this feature where when you're watching it, it vibrates really fast, which struck me as something close to an LSD flashback. I'm not sure if this was intended or not. I suppose another reason to watch the film is to see the early work of director Jess Franco, who would later go on to direct such notable hits as "Swedish Nympho Slaves" and "Night of 1,000 Sexes". Of course, I'm being entirely facetious. Admittedly, these were translated titles, but I submit that if you're Ingmar Bergman, you don't ever get your film title translated as "Swedish Nympho Slaves". In addition to Kinski, Fred Williams gives a performance as Jonathan Harker that appears almost animatronic. Calling him wooden might get a tree mad at me.

By Michael Edwards DVD Gifts Turning this review for the recent DVD release of was at least a little less sexual in nature than his most famous film, Vampyros Lesbos With , Franco actually pulled together a fairly decent telling of the Dracula legend and utilized a fair number of real castles to help offset the expenses that would have been incurred by building sets. However, it was the lack of budget that also hurt the film by not allowing for decent special effects. Everything from blood to bats to boulders looks pretty bad and detracts from what could otherwise be considered and elegant looking film. The main saving grace of the film is the earnest performances by most of the lead actors. Of course Lee stands out amongst the cast, but I also have to hand it to actors Herbert Lom as Van Helsing and Klaus Kinski as Renfield.
