Rally in Columbus: Michael J. Fox and Sherrod Brown
Posted by on October 30, 2006 at 01:06 PM Email this Print this Blog this Digg this When Claire McCaskill debuted her newest ad, featuring the familiar face of Michael J. Fox speaking plainly and honestly to the camera about the importance of electing McCaskill, a supporter of stem cell research, over her opponent, Senator Jim Talent, who had voted against expanding federal funding for the research, it made news. When right-wing pundits seized on the ad to personally attack Michael J. Fox , who was visibly exhibiting the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, (one of the many diseases that stem cell research has the potential to cure) it was appalling, desperate and despicable. Fox, a vocal proponent of medical research became the target of ugly attacks. It was suggested that he should have waited until his symptoms abated to film the ad, or that he was exaggerating for dramatic effect. Their attacks backfired. Michel J. Fox stood up to these bullies and he has continued to speak out about the critical need for this research. As election day approaches he has traveled around the country to campaign for candidates who support stem cell research. Today, he made his way to Columbus, Ohio where he was joined by Sherrod Brown and a packed room of Ohio Democrats, for a rally in support of Brown's Senate campaign.

The Unconscionable Claims of Michael J. Fox
By Mary Davenport
The popular and appealing actor Michael J. Fox has taken to the airwaves in Senate battleground states Missouri, Maryland, and New Jersey with a highly misleading ad urging defeat of Republican Senatorial candidates opposing the use of taxpayer dollars to fund new embryonic stem cell line research. He states, "Stem cell research offers hope to millions of Americans with diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.... But George Bush and Michael Steele would put limits on the most promising stem cell research."

Michael J. Fox Stem Cell Research Controversy
Actor Michael J. Fox has a series of political campaign ads circulating television networks in which he tries to persuade Americans to vote for Democrats who support embryonic stem cell research. Fox, 45, suffers from Parkinson’s, a chronic disease of the central nervous system, causing muscular tremors and physical weakness. Michael J. Fox is causing disputes in Missouri where in his attack ad he states, “Senator Jim Talent opposes expanding stem cell research. Senator Talent even wanted to criminalize the science that gives us a chance for hope.” In a similar ad, Fox attacks Michael Steele, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maryland. The irony of this campaign ad is that Steele’s opponent, Ben Cardin, voted against stem cell research. Conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh retaliated against Fox’s campaign ads, causing a fury of attacks against him when claimed that Michael J. Fox may have exaggerated his condition. Fox was later interviewed by Katie Couric, in which he says he wasn't acting or off his medication. Limbaugh defends his accusations on his website , stating: "They [Liberals, Fox, Couric] get personal , mocking every conservative illness, foible and failing (including my own) real, fake or forged, yet act outraged that we dare challencge one of them on politics Michael J. Fox and Ben Cardin are misleading the public by playing on the hopes and fears of millions of Americans who are suffering from debilitating diseases like Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimers and Dimentia, as well as Parkinson’s Disease. The ad campaign is repulsive because it’s dishonest in promising cures to these diseases, cures that are uncertain and yet to be discovered.

Michael J. Fox visits the Waisman Center
Feb 2, 2005 Michael J. Fox visited the Waisman Center on Tuesday, February 1 to tour the stem cell research laboratories of Clive Svendsen and Su-Chun Zhang , as well as other components of the center’s translational research tower, including the Waisman Clinical BioManufacturing Facility and the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior . Fox was accompanied by Wisconsin Governor James Doyle.
Following the tour, Fox joined a luncheon discussion with the governor, center director Marsha Mailick Seltzer , the center’s stem cell scientists, along with UW stem cell scientist Jamie Thomson. Also at lunch were Carl Gulbrandsen, managing director of Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation , Rhonda Norsetter, senior special assistant to the chancellor, and director, federal relations, and the leadership of the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Fox’s visit to the Waisman Center culminated with a press conference, which was covered by many media representatives. When asked what most impressed him about his visit to the Waisman Center, Fox mentioned that he had seen stem cells under a microscope for the first time. He also cited the intelligence and talents of the many young scientists he had met that morning. Commenting that he was at the Waisman Center to “kick the tires,” Fox was clearly impressed. “This is where we have pinned a lot of our hopes and goals,” he said. Fox referred to Wisconsin as the "gold standard" in stem cell research. His visit to Wisconsin ended with a reception at the governor's residence.

Michael J Fox fighting for bad science - UPDATED
When I was a little girl, this political commercial by Michael J Fox wants The video is indeed difficult to watch, this story must have been very unwelcome, yesterday Stem cells might cause brain tumors, study finds
Steven Goldman and colleagues at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York said human stem cells injected into rat brains turned into cells that looked like early tumors.
The animals did get better. But the grafted cells started to show areas that no longer consisted of dopamine-releasing neurons, but of dividing cells that had the potential to give rise to tumors. The researchers killed the animals before they could know for sure, and said any experiments in humans would have to be done very cautiously. Scientists have long feared that human embryonic stem cells could turn into tumors, because of their pliability. As reported by the New England Journal of Medicine , and - ahem - the New York Times became nightmarish experimentations gone bad
The late development of dystonia and dyskinesia, more than one year after surgery, in five patients who had received transplants deserves comment. Parkinsonism in these patients improved during the first year after transplantation, even with substantial reductions in dosage or the discontinuation of levodopa. The subsequent appearance of dystonia and dyskinesia implies that the continued fiber outgrowth from the transplant has led to a relative excess of dopamine. The simplest response to this outcome would be to transplant less tissue in the future. The distribution of the tissue is also likely to be important.
