What is Choreographic Style? - Forsythe as an Example by TUK August 2000 Introduction In trying to come to some definition of choreographic style this study will consider both how it imposes identity on a work and the relationship between it and the other constituent aspects of ballet. By addressing these issues the importance of stylistic elements may become more apparent, allowing some exposition to be reached that encompasses the multi-faceted nature of the concept of style. The discussion, though fundamentally philosophical, does require a degree of empirical support. By looking at how a particular choreographer makes use of the diverse stylistic possibilities of the media critical analysis can be used to supplement logical deduction. For the purpose of this study the choreographer whose ballets will be central to the analysis is William Forsythe. Style and Interpretation In any ballet the dancers will have different physiques with different proprioceptive responses. They will come from different social backgrounds and exhibit individual psychological responses. In addition they may have had a wide diversity of dance educations, having trained at various schools and in various genres of dance. These result in stylistic qualities innate to the way each dancer moves that, to a greater or lesser degree, give individual identity to their dancing. Even the choreographer who performs in his or her own work will find that their own body has a distinct style of movement that defines the way it will respond. This can place limits on how far even the choreographer is able to fulfil his or her own intention.

William Forsythe
Specialty: Dimwitted Hayseeds and Rogue Cops
You sure don't look like a William Forsythe. You look more like an Ernest Paxton, or an Alton Owens, or a Sergeant Buck Atwater, or an Evelle, or a "Pigiron," or a "Pug Face Crusher" names, each and every one, of characters that you've played, in movies like The Rock and Extreme Prejudice and Raising Arizona and Savage Dawn . Which is to say, either a dangerously amoral special agent or a bad-seed police officer or a backwards, inbred country boy. Which is what you play in pretty much every movie. Don't you know that actors named William Forsythe are supposed to be tall and distinguished with silver-grey hair, and play captains of industry, or the curmudgeonly rich man in an Olsen twins' movie who's constantly grimacing and shaking his fist as the Olsens run roughshod through the mansion, but who eventually discovers that he, too, is a kid at heart? Or that you should be playing a character like Blake Carrington, the patriarch of the Carrington family on Dynasty , for nine years, like John Forsythe did?

William Forsyth article "Composition for trees," may be found a complete account of Mr Forsyth’s discoveries and mode of treating injured wood. It may be sufficient here to mention, that his composition, or medicament, was formed according to the following receipt: "Take one bushel of fresh cow-dung, half a bushel of lime-rubbish of old buildings, (that from the ceilings of rooms is preferable,) half a bushel of wood-ashes, and a sixteenth part of a bushel of pit or river sand; the three last articles are to be sifted fine before they are mixed; then work them well together with a spade, and afterwards with a wooden beater, until the stuff is very smooth, like fine plaster used for the ceilings of rooms." Mr Forsyth, who was a member of the Antiquarian, Linnaean, and other societies, died July 25, 1804. He enjoyed the honours paid to him for his useful invention, with an unaffected modesty, which gave them a higher grace; and his benevolence and private worth were warmly attested by his friends. A particular genus of plants has been named Forsythia, in honour of his name.

Forsyth, Bill
0.07 sec. write_ads(AdsNum, 0)
Scottish film director and screenwriter. Forsyth established a reputation with a series of comedies set in Scotland, including Gregory's Girl (1980) and Local Hero (1983), which combined whimsy and dry humour. His first feature film was That Sinking Feeling (1979). Other films include Comfort and Joy Housekeeping (1987), and Being Human (1994). He has recently written and directed a sequel to his most popular success, Gregory's Two Girls Forsyth began his career directing documentaries and industrial films. His work with the Glasgow Youth Theatre from 1972 culminated in That Sinking Feeling , in which, within the framework of a gently comedic genre piece, he juxtaposes the representation of a recognisably contemporary world with sympathetic portraits of inveterate dreamers. From Gregory's idle fantasizing about his dream woman to the villagers' sabotage of a Texan oilman's plans in Local Hero , the line that separates the real and magical worlds is subtly blurred in Forsyth's work.

b. William David Forsyth
b. July 29, 1946, Whiteinch, Glasgow, Scotland
by Christopher Meir
Christopher Meir received his MA in Film Studies from Concordia University. Come the fall, he will begin work on his doctorate in Film Studies at the University of Warwick. He will be writing his dissertation on new Scottish cinema. Filmography Select Bibliography Web Resources Long before Ewan McGregor climbed into a toilet looking for heroin suppositories or Mel Gibson mooned the English army, when one thought of Scottish cinema, only one name came to mind: Bill Forsyth. A true pioneer, Forsyth became the small nation's first internationally recognised filmmaker and helped to build from the ground up an infrastructure for film production within Scotland. His early films like Gregory's Girl (1981) and Local Hero (1983) offered unique insight into the condition of contemporary Scotland and challenged many traditional representations of the nation. Forsyth's career would also take him beyond the borders of Scotland and saw him produce three films in North America. As was the case with many filmmakers, Forsyth's experience in Hollywood would leave him embittered and nearly put off filmmaking all together. Despite this he was able to return to Scotland after a 15 year absence and demonstrate that in the midst of a cinematic renaissance and a political movement towards independence, he was still an important artist on the national scene.
