GLENN FORD: AN INTERVIEW (1990)
By Dina-Marie Kulzer The passing of Glenn Ford (August 30, 2006) marks the loss of the last great leading man of the golden age of Hollywood. This is truly the end of an era. It was one of the great thrills of my life as a classic movie lover and journalist to interview Mr. Ford. I was young and absolutely terrified to do an interview with such a legendary actor. Mr. Ford immediately put me at ease and was as charming as you would hope him to be. It was an honor and privilege to talk with him. Mr. Ford spent the last years of his life in the loving care of his son Peter Ford and his family. On May 1, 2006, a gala 90th birthday celebration was held at Grauman's Egyptian Theare where a restored print of Gilda was screened on the 60th anniversary of its original release. Mr. Ford was unable to attend; however in a a videotaped message played at the tribute, he said "I wish I could thank every one of you personally with good wishes to all of you.... I wish I were up and around, but I'm doing the best that I can.... There's so much I have to be grateful for." Audiences worldwide are grateful for the legacy of outstanding films and sterling performances that Glenn Ford leaves us. The following interview stands as written in 1990 in the present tense with only slight updates.

Glenn Ford Biography
  • Birth Name: Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford Birth Place: Quebec, Canada Date of Birth / Zodiac Sign: May 1, 1916, Taurus Date of Death: August 30, 2006 Profession: Actor
To most people born after 1960, this ruggedly handsome actor was best known as the Man of Steel's adoptive dad in the 1978 Superman movie. But by that year, Ford — who had spent most of his career playing military men or gunslingers — already had 40 years of films under his belt. Born in Canada but raised in California, he started out in theater but began landing movie roles in the '30s and '40s, including five films opposite bombshell Rita Hayworth. Although he did not endure as well as other stars from Hollywood’s Golden Age, he made his biggest impression in the '50s in a string of strong but sensitive roles: a dedicated teacher attempting to reach his thuggish students in Blackboard Jungle , a widowed father looking for love in The Courtship of Eddie's Father , and a goofy captain facing culture clashes in Japan in

    Forum: Movies
Enlarge This Image Courtesy of Peter Ford, via Associated Press Glenn Ford in 1988. Correction Appended Glenn Ford , a laconic, soft-spoken actor whose leading roles in westerns, melodramas and romantic films made his name a familiar one on movie-house marquees from the early 1940’s through the 60’s, died Wednesday at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 90. Paramedics called to the home shortly before 4 p.m. found him dead, the police said. He had a series of strokes in the 1990’s. In movies like “Gilda” “The Big Heat” “Blackboard Jungle” (1955) and “Pocketful of Miracles” (1961), Mr. Ford’s acting could appear effortless. But in his quiet, easygoing manner, he could also project a certain depth and complexity of character, combining affability with resoluteness, gentleness with inner strength. Critics consistently gave his performances high praise.

The highway into and out of town is sometimes called "le chemin du Roy," or the King's Road. It was Canada's first carriageway and it was opened in 1734 as a link between Québec City and Montréal. Blessed by a river to provide power, Sainte-Christine was an early industrial town and it was here that Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford was born on May 1, 1916. Learn more about Glenn Ford. But for an actor who frequently played cowpokes, he didn't project an easygoing nature. Ford's characters often looked uncomfortable, but the nervous edginess the actor projected adapted smoothly to Westerns, film noir, service comedies (he specialized in frazzled officers) and regular-guy roles that called for earnest intensity. On Wednesday, Ford was found dead at 90 in his Beverly Hills home.
