Our particular branch of the Finch family has been successfully traced back to the birth of John Finch, who left his native England in search of a new life, setting sail for a America in 1630.
A tremendous amount of appreciation is extended to Ora F. Finch and Charles L. Finch , who, without the benefit of modern means, researched and created our first "Finch Family Tree". That original document was published in the Indianapolis News, October 3, 1920, and has been amended over the years to include genealogical data spanning dates 1595 to 2005. The information passed down from Ora and Charles Finch has proved indispensable with respect to continued research of our family's history, and it is only through their individual contributions that a more complete record has now been created.

Bibliography of Primary and Secondary Sources
    I include:
    • A list of all the manuscripts which contain handwritten copies of Anne Finch's poems, both those which were openly attributed to her in print and those which were not. In an appendix to my book I will include a list of the unattributed poems and arguments for attribution. For now the list and arguments may be found in my chronology of Finch's poems (which includes all her poems, a brief description of them, their earliest printing history, all the various anthologies they have appeared in, and their sources if they are translations or imitations or allusive).
    • A list of all 20th century editions of Finch's poetry, none of which are complete. (I have now been able to include the most recent partial edition of Finch's poetry by Barbara McGovern and Charles Hinnant.)
    • A link to a bibliography of books Finch used as source texts for her translations and adaptations; this includes books of the same type which she may have been influenced by, and a list of secondary books on this material.
    • A link to an annotated list of the precise sources of each of Finch's fables . Here the interested reader finds Finch's poem next to each of the sources.
    • A list of those secondary sources which directly relate to Anne or her family members and close friends and the places where she lived. Here are also those critical and scholarly essays and books which have been written about her texts or her life thus far.

A layman, raised Protestant. As a young man he converted to Catholicism, married, served as a catechist, and made his home a center of missionary activity.

    Ven. John Finch
A martyr , b. about 1548; d. 20 April, 1584. He was a yeoman of Eccleston, Lancashire, and a member of a well-known old Catholic family , but he appears to have been brought up in schism . When he was twenty years old he went to London where he spent nearly a year with some cousins at Inner Temple . While there he was forcibly struck by the contrast between Protestantism and Catholicism in practice and determined to lead a Catholic life. Failing to find advancement in London he returned to Lancashire where he was reconciled to Catholic Church . He then married and settled down, his house becoming a centre of missionary work, he himself harbouring priests and aiding them in every way, besides acting as catechist. His zeal drew on him the hostility of the authorities, and at Christmas , 1581, he was entrapped into bringing a priest , George Ostliffe, to a place where both were apprehended. It was given out that Finch, having betrayed the priest and other Catholics , had taken refuge with the Earl of Derby, but in fact, he was kept in the earl's house as a prisoner , sometimes tortured and sometimes bribed in order to pervert him and induce him to give information. This failing, he was removed to the Fleet
