W.C. Fields William Claude Dukenfield was born Jan. 29, 1880 in Darby, Pennsylvania, just across the Philadelphia city line. The eldest of the five children of James Dukenfield, an English immigrant, and Kate Felton, a native Philadelphian, Fields lived to hear him tell it in later years a Huck Finn sort of childhood in which he left home at age 11 (after smashing a crate over his father's head) and survived by his wits, sleeping in a ditch or on a pool table, stealing food and staying one step ahead of the constable. But in fact, "Whitey" Dukenfield, as the blond youth was nicknamed, often squabbled with his father, but he lived with the family until age 18. Having left school somewhere around sixth grade, he'd worked with his father hawking fruits and vegetables, in addition to other jobs in a cigar store, a pool hall, a newsstand and a department store. More typically, Whitey could be found at one of Philly's several variety theaters, for he had taken a keen interest in juggling. Touring the circuits then were such notables as Charles T. Aldritch and O.K. Sato, Comedy Juggler, but one in particular seems to have inspired the boy most: Paul Cinquevalle, the Prince of Jugglers, a mustachioed American showman who juggled plates, cannon balls, umbrellas, even tables and chairs. Young Dukenfield began practicing fervently, starting with his father's produce, and worked up routines with balls, hats, cigar boxes and a cane. Thanks to his tenure at the pool hall, he also perfected a host of billiards tricks. But, determined to make his act stand out, Dukenfield added touches of comedy to his juggling, like "accidentally" dropping an object, only to deftly snatch it on the rebound or send it caroming off a startled assistant and back into the flow. In January 1898 he began performing at local Masons halls and such venues as "Wm. C. Felton" but soon attired in tattered clothes and fake beard became "W.C. Fields, Tramp Juggler." By August of that year he'd secured a job at Plymouth Park, an amusement park in Norristown, PA. Proprietor J. Fortescue soon moved the popular young juggler to his Atlantic City venue, Fortescue's Pavillion.

The major exception is in , the first sound film in which Fields was given the solo lead. The movie opens with a masterful drunk scene, in which Fields staggers home, removes his shoes to avoid waking his wife, loses his hat repeatedly, and has to resort to using a funnel to insert his key in the keyhole. Once indoors, he manages to get entangled in the hallway curtains to the degree he nearly strangles himself.

#79: W. C. Fields - Six Short Films
W. C. Fields - Six Short Films In The Bank Dick , W. C. Fields says, "In the old Sennett days, I used to direct Fatty Arbuckle, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and the rest of them... Nights, I used to tend bar." Six Short Films gives viewers a chance to see the product of that kind of schedule. The results are pretty much what you'd expect. Here are the Six Short Films Pool Sharks , 1915, directed by Edwin Middleton, written by W. C. Fields (according to the IMDB; there's no credited writer). Despite what the IMDB may tell you, this was Fields's first film. He basically does his best Charlie Chaplin: Fields is 35 in this still, still relatively unscathed by drinking. But even at his young age, Fields had grasped the principle of comedy that would inform so much of his career: when in doubt, have somebody start throwing shit. That's about 30 seconds after the credits. So, film historians, here it is: the first projectile to hit W. C. Fields in the back of the head. It would not be the last. There's just about no plot to speak of; Fields agrees to play pool with Bud Ross for the hand of the unnamed actress on the hammock. Havoc ensues. The chief distinction between Fields in this film and Fields in the rest of his work is that he's occasionally cheerful:

Fields , Citadel, 1966. James Curtis, W.C.Fields , Knopf, 2003. I watch fewer movies than almost anyone (they don’t call them films any more, do they?), and I suppose it’s indicative of something that one of my few cinematic idols is W.C. Fields. I give Louvish an A+ for the research behind his recent biography, and about a C- for the Writing, which reminds me annoyingly of the narrative of an educational film. I would love to have a utility which strips the Writing from factual books where it isn’t needed, the way you can strip Word formatting from a document to get the plain-text version. (It would be too much to ask authors to write for me in the first place, of course, since no one else would ever buy a book suited to my tastes). I also don’t appreciate the authorial-judgment obbligato found at the end of every biography, where the lightweight biographer solemnly proclaims his verdict on a much more interesting guy who actually did something with his life. But at least you can skip these verdicts, which are normally at the end (pp. 480-484 in Louvish’s book – Louvish’s pontification isn’t especially bad, but I hate all of ‘em). So far I’ve finished the part about Fields’ life before film. He adds more evidence to Ronald Fields’ family archive material, showing that most of what people think they know about Fields’ early life is inaccurate and easily explainable by Fields commendable habit of bullshitting reporters. (Then as now, the media liked to believe that entertainers had a criminal, gutter-punk past, which Fields really did not). Field’s actual childhood was pretty interesting without the BS, and Louvish has a lot of good stuff about his international career as a juggling tramp. Along the way you get an great history of early XXc entertainment I had not known that vaudeville was a cleaned-up, respectable version of burlesque.

Fields came to prominence in vaudeville as an "eccentric juggler" (besides the usual Indian clubs or balls, he'd also juggle hats, canes, cigar boxes) and later, a novelty pool playing act, where he'd execute numerous astounding shots, sometimes using some highly unusual pool cues. (I've read in many books that the audience could see what was going on by means of a large mirror suspended above the pool table.)
One story regarding Fields' pool playing act comes from his tenure with the Ziegfeld Follies. During a performance one evening, the audience seemed to be laughing randomly for no particular reason. Perplexed, Fields glanced down and from the corner of his eye, he spotted fellow comic Ed Wynn hiding under the pool table, making faces and giggling. Normally, such an attempt at horning in on his act would have enraged Fields, but he kept his composure and proceeded to set up his next shot. With one fluid move, Fields "accidentally" conked Wynn solidly on the back of the head with his pool cue. Wynn groggily crawled out from under the table and offstage, and Fields went on with the act...

W.C. Fields on attitude
"Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill." One of the intellectual stumbling blocks that many people are running into with my new book is found in the title of Chapter Four: Positioning is Pass© . I think it's because they have morphed the notion of positioning - which was originally a game of manipulating advertising messages to occupy a unique "position" in the customer's mind - into something else. Perhaps this (from the AMA): Positioning refers to the customer's perceptions of the place a product or brand occupies in a market segment. In some markets, a position is achieved by associating the benefits of a brand with the needs or life style of the segments. More often, positioning involves the differentiation of the company's offering from the competition by making or implying a comparison in terms of specific attributes. So tell me again. What "position" did Jobs carve out with the iPod? What specific "benefits" did he articulate? What comparisons did he make? And ditto for Shultz's Starbucks. I don't remember an ad exclaiming, "We brew better!" Do you? And Carl's Jr.? Help me with their

What little plot there is concerns Sous© and his future son-in-law, banker Og Oggleby (played by the great Grady Sutton), investing 500 dollars of the bank's money in a worthless stock. Oggleby is worried, but Sous© convinces that the stock is going to explode, so Oggleby plans to invest the money and replace it when his bonus comes in. Unfortunately for all concerned, the bank examiner (played by Franklin Pangborne) shows up to inspect the books before Oggleby can replace the money. The plot is merely an excuse for Fields to ad-lib his way through the film, dropping memorable dialogue into every scene. THE BANK DICK is a treasury of quotable Fieldsisms: Go To Page: 1

W.C. Fields, Brought Back to Philadelphia
By Jonathan Yardley Monday, April 21, 2003; Page C01 An occasional series in which The Post's book critic reconsiders notable and/or neglected books from the past. For years the rule among biographers has been "the bigger the better." Lately there has been a tentative move in the opposite direction small is beautiful but the prevailing assumption really hasn't changed: Big lives deserve big books and so, for that matter, do little lives. Every scrap of obsessively researched biographical detail demands to be included, no matter how little it may tell us about the subject, with the result that in recent months we have been given 400 pages on Hart Crane, 450 pages on Samuel Pepys and an astounding 1,150 pages in what is merely the third volume of Robert Caro's as-yet-unfinished life of Lyndon Johnson.
W.C. Fields in "The Bank Dick" (1940). Robert Lewis Taylor's 1949 biography brings Fields back to life more vividly than a current, massive tome.
