Here are the funniest W.C. Fields quotes spoken by one of the classic funny men of all time.
Scene from "You're Telling Me"
W.C. Fields
  • Some weasel took the cork out of my lunch...
The cost of living has gone up another dollar a quart.
I certainly do not drink all the time. I have to sleep you know
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house unless they have a well-stocked bar Twas a woman who drove me to drink. I never had the courtesy to thank her. I believe in tying the marriage knot, as long as it's around the woman's neck. The world is getting to be such a dangerous place, a man is lucky to get out of it alive. Women are like elephants to me: nice to look at, but I wouldn't want to own one. (When asked : "How do you like children?") "Fried!" My illness is due to my doctor's insistence that I drink milk, a whitish fluid they force down helpless babies Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people. I am free of all prejudices. I hate everyone equally.

Fields created one of the great American comic personas of the first half of the 20th century—a misanthrope who teetered on the edge of buffoonery but never quite fell in, an egotist blind to his own failings, a charming drunk; and a man who hated children, dogs, and women, unless they were the wrong sort of women. This characterization that he portrayed in films and radio was so strong that it was generally identified with Fields himself. It was maintained by the then-typical movie-studio publicity departments at Fields's studios ( Paramount and Universal ) and further established by Robert Lewis Taylor's biography W.C. Comedy is a serious business... Though he is better known these days for his movie performances, in his youth W. C. Fields was the most successful comedy juggler of his generation. He was born William Claude Dukenfield on April 9th 1879, and again on January 29th 1880 (according to other sources). He claims to have first worked professionally as a juggler at the age of 15, in Pottsville, PA, and elsewhere at the age of 11 in Norristown, PA. Be that as it may, it is clear that by 1899 he was working at Fortesque's Pier in Atlantic City, NJ. Among his other duties was building a crowd by pretending to drown in the ocean and being rescued by one of the other performers. It was here that he met his future wife, Hattie, who assisted him in his act until the birth of their son in 1904. Fields was billed as 'The Eccentric Juggler'. On stage he dressed as a tramp, with a fake beard and exaggerated eye make up, while Hattie wore a tuxedo with tight satin pants. He did not speak during his act, but did a lot of physical and character comedy. He might drop deliberately and blame it on his assistant, or fake behind the back throws by juggling two in one hand and waving a third ball behind his back with the other hand. He worked with balls, cigar boxes, hats and a cane. Later he developed an elaborate routine using a gimmicked pool table, in which he would bounce balls from the table to a hip pocket via bounces on various parts of his body. However, it is in the field of comedy that he made his greatest contribution to the art of juggling, making character more important than tricks (though his tricks were not easy), and turning his juggling act into a true performance.

(Bypass this intro and go directly to the index of quotes.) Most people think of W.C. Fields as a film star, known for his eccentric outlook and distinctive speaking style. Yet, Fields was not just a brilliant practitioner of the verbal and physical gag, he has also been revered as a general humorista commentator/sage of the American scene. With that kind of reputation, you might expect that it would be easy to fill volumes full of Fields' spoken wit and wisdom. Alas, this is not the case. In fact, there are precious few stand-alone quips extant from the mouth or pen of W.C. Fields. The ones that do exist on paper are often of suspect origin, or are second- and third-hand accounts passed from acquaintancesoften through the distorted lens of memory. For someone making the case that Fields was as important or as prolific a commentator as, say, Mark Twain or Will Rogers, this presents a complicationyou have to have evidence to make the assertion. The usual benchmark of such as legacyand the easiest evidence to cite, of course, is the pithy aphorism. Fields didn't leave behind many of these, or many were simply lost to history by lazy scribes. Fields himself is certainly partly to blame: for years he promised publishers of a forthcoming autobiography that never materialized.* Such a book surely would have been a treasure trove of witticism on a variety of topics.

Though known for his comic acting, Fields started as an "eccentric juggler," (and was later inducted into the juggling hall of fame) appearing in the make-up of a genteel "bum" scruffy beard and shabby tuxedo, for instance. He juggled cigar boxes, hats, and a variety of other objects in what seems to have been a unique and fresh act, parts of which are reproduced in some of his films. His trademark mumbling patter was developed during this time, and he toured with Irwin's Burlesquers and other vaudeville troupes in the United States, Europe and Australia before making it to Ziegfeld's show. There he delighted audiences with a wild pool skit, complete with bizarrely shaped cues and a custom-built table used for a number of hilarious gags and surprising stunts. His pool game is also reproduced, at least in part, in some of his films.
Like many vaudevillians, Fields worked in silent films and one-reelers, but he first hit big theatrical fame in 1923 in the Broadway musical Poppy, where he perfected his persona as an oily, failed confidence man. Fields later appeared in talking feature films and short subjects, including the 1934 classic It's a Gift, which included a version of his stage sketch of trying to sleep on the back porch as a result of nagging family and being bedeviled by noisy neighbors and traveling salesmen. ("You're drunk!" "Yeah, and you're crazy! But I'll be sober tomorrow, and you'll be crazy for the rest of your life!")

The absurdist anti-politics of W.C. Fields. Paul A. Cantor Print Edition Like many Americans, I'm having trouble getting excited about this year's presidential race. Somehow the candidates don't measure up to my standards of political greatness. Confronted with this group of diminutive talents, I think back nostalgically to earlier days of American politics, when giants strode the earth. Take 1940, for examplethe last time an authentic Great Man ran for president of the United States. No, I don't mean Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and not Wendell Wilkie or Norman Thomas either, but the one candidate in the race who had the right attitude toward the government: W.C. Fields. Few people today are aware that a great comedian took a fling at presidential politics and, in anticipation of today's campaign hucksters, even got a book out of the process:
