Rainer Werner Fassbinder May 31 June 10 ) was a German movie director , screenwriter and actor . A premier representative of the New German Cinema . Famous for his frenetic pace in film-making, in a professional career that lasted less than fifteen years Fassbinder completed 35 feature length films; two television series shot on film; three short films ; four video productions; twenty four stage plays and four radio plays directed; and 36 acting roles in his own and other’s films. He also worked as an actor (film and theater), author cameraman composer designer ... producer and theater manager. Fassbinder was distinguished for the strong provocative current underlying his work and the air of scandal surrounded his artistic choices and private life. His intense discipline and phenomenal creative energy when working were in violent contrast with a wild, self-destructive libertinism that earned him a reputation as the enfant terrible of the New German Cinema, as well as its central figure. He had tortured relationships in his personal life with the people he drew around him in a surrogate family of actors and technicians. However, his pictures demonstrate his deep sensitivity to social misfits and his hatred of institutionalized violence. He ruthlessly attacked both German bourgeois society and the larger limitations of humanity. His films detail the desperate yearning for love and freedom and the many ways in which society, and the individual, thwarts it. A prodigiously inventive artist, Fassbinder distilled the best elements of his sources —

Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1946-1982) Controversial and prolific German director and playwright, who attracted attention with his politically committed and disillusioned stage plays and films. Fassbinder's central theme was the political and social corruption of postwar Germany. He wrote most of his plays in 1968-71 for his own "anti-theatre" in Munchen. Fassbinder completed 41 films. Among his best-known works include The Marriage of Maria Braun Berlin Alexanderpatz Effi Briest (1974), based on Theodore Fontane's novel from 1894. "To show the narrative on film is like the author telling a story, but there's a difference. When one reads a book, one creates - as a reader - one's own images, but when a story is told on screen in pictures, then it is concrete and really "complete" One is not creative as a member of a film audience, and it was this passivity that I tried to counter in Effi Brief . I would prefer people to "read" the film. It's a film which one cannot simple experience, and which doesn't attack the audience... one has to read it. That's the most significant thing about the film."

    Also: Actor, producer, playwright Birth Name: Bad Wörishofen Born: May 31, 1945, Bavaria, Germany Died: June 10, 1982, Munich, Germany RAINER W. FASSBINDER FILMOGRAPHY The City Tramp During his "anti-theater" period he made ten feature films, including Love is Colder Than Death Katzelmacher (1969), and Beware of a Holy Whore (1971). Influenced by Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Marie Straub and the theories of Bertolt Brecht, these films are austere and minimalist in style, and although praised by many critics, they proved too demanding and inaccessible for a mass audience. It was during this time, however, that Fassbinder developed his rapid working methods. Using actors and technicians from the "anti-theater" group, he was able to complete films ahead of schedule and often under budget and thus compete successfully for government subsidies. In search of a wider, more sympathetic audience, Fassbinder turned for a model to Hollywood melodrama, particularly the films of German-trained Douglas Sirk, who made

Rainer Werner Fassbinder
director, writer, actor (1946-1982)
Fassbinder is renowned for politically controversial plays and motion pictures that often criticize social institutions. with: Born in Bad W¶rishofen in Bavaria, Fassbinder was raised by his mother after his parents' divorce in 1952. He left school in 1962 and held various jobs before making his first short films in 1965 and 1966. In 1967 he formed a commune of actors, including Hanna Schygulla from Germany, which became the 'antitheater' group in 1968. The ensemble performed in Fassbinder's plays and in the feature films he adapted from these stage works, notably Katzelmacher (1969; slang term used pejoratively to refer to workers from foreign countries), the story of a Greek immigrant persecuted by his German neighbors. Most of Fassbinder's later films, which often starred Schygulla and Fassbinder himself, were based on his own screenplays. They include Die Bitteren Tr¤nen der Petra von Kant (1972), widely praised for its realistic treatment of lesbian love;

Brigitte Mira and El Hediben Salem in Ali: Fear Eats the Soul Fassbinder ruthlessly attacked both German bourgeois society and the larger limitations of humanity; his films detail the desperate yearning for love and freedom and the many ways in which society, and the individual, thwarts it. The titles of two his films sum up this romantic pessimism: Love Is Colder Than Death (1969) and I Only Want You to Love Me (1976). His main characters tend to be naifs, either male or female, who must be rudely, sometimes murderously disabused of their romantic illusions, which threaten the social and philosophical status quo.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder was a filmmaker prolific to the point of being a workaholic. From 1969 to 1982 he directed over 40 productions, most of them feature films, a few TV specials and one huge 931-minute TV mini-series Berlin Alexanderplatz Satan's Brew In a Year with 13 Moons The Third Generation and Querelle (1982). He also refined his 'victim cycle' in more cinematic terms and articulated his themes in the bourgeois milieu with his trilogy about women in post-fascist Germany (see below). His masterpiece Berlin Alexanderplatz was also made in this period. Obviously to go into detail about all these films would take a book so therefore I have decided to look at some films from each of these cycles and some of the more idiosyncratic ones mentioned above.
