Parliament might want to forget about Iraq, but we will march on Monday to remind them
Brian Eno
Saturday October 6, 2007
The Guardian

Our leaders would undoubtedly be happy if we "moved on" from Iraq. They don't want to talk about it any more: it was a dreadful blunder, and reflects little credit on any of them. Presumably this is why the question has hardly been debated in parliament. Although the majority of the public were always against the war, this was not reflected by their elected representatives. The government behaved in a way that was transparently undemocratic but the Conservatives won't call them on it, for without their almost unanimous support the whole project couldn't have happened. But to conveniently forget Iraq now is to forfeit the only possible benefit the war might have: the chance to rethink the dysfunctional political system that got us into this hole. If we don't, we risk digging a series of ever deeper holes. The Iraq adventure was justified as the planting of a beacon of democracy in the Middle East. Not only did it utterly fail at that, it also undermined our democracy. Appealing to our paranoia more than our vision, George Bush and Tony Blair obtained restrictions on freedoms that had taken centuries to evolve. They said these were necessary to ensure our security - a device used by authoritarian leaders since time immemorial.

"I am deeply moved by your versions of my songs". "I like it very, very much!"
We were just making this cd for ourselves for the fun of it. We're big fans. It's amazing how it's all worked out, and now you can hear it too!
These versions lack some of the finesse and subtleties of the original, but retain the arrangements, and add a joyously aggressive rock edge.
It's as if we remade the whole album with me playing everything and Caroleen singing. Yay! It sure was a lot of fun to make. I hope you enjoy it too. Please listen to Brian Eno's music. Thanks to Mr. Eno for creating such a great collection of songs that have endured the test of time, still great today.

Velvet Underground
Brian Eno once said that even though hardly anyone bought Velvet Underground recordings at the time they first appeared, almost everyone who did formed their own bands. This is apparently the only way to explain the immense influence this group has had, despite its almost entire lack of commercial success. Although the Velvets were apparently similar to other late-sixties rock groups, in that their subject matter included sex and drugs, these similarities were only superficial. While other, mostly West-coast or London based bands, snuck in sly references to marijuana or LSD, and sang wryly about straight, extra-marital intercourse, the New York based VU trod an entirely different path: they sang, without apparent moral judgment, about addiction to harder drugs, such as heroin, with music that simulated the experiences accompanying such drug use. In the sexual realm, they sang about sado-masochism and other alternatives, again focusing on the immediate feelings of the participants, and not on the attitudes of the surrounding society, or on the larger consequences of such behavior. Unlike many groups that followed, however, the Velvet Underground defined itself neither by its extreme subject matter nor by its noise levels. The group recorded many songs that would qualify as soft- or folk-rock, and with much more conventional topics. In fact, the stylistic diversity captured on the group's four originally released albums was broader than that of any of its contemporaries.

Brian Eno at 77 Million Paintings In a career spanning almost thirty five years and an astonishing range of artistic practice, Brian Eno has become an iconic figure within international contemporary culture. As an artist, musician, ideologue and systems-maker, he has not only written, performed, recorded and produced some of the most intoxicating and original music of the last thirty years, but has also established a philosophy of cultural production which links the enquiring spirit of conceptual art to the broadest applications of popular culture and sociology.
Eno's role as a founder member of the art rock group Roxy Music, in 1971, can still be regarded as one of the most accomplished debuts in the history of pop. By colliding a highly stylised selection of popular music forms "from French chanson to surfer rockabilly by way of Johnnie Ray" with an uncompromising backdrop of atonal, electronically massaged atmospherics, Roxy Music were and remain the most eloquent and spectacular testimony to Eno's definition of pop.
But Eno's creativity required a broader laboratory and playground in which to renew itself, unboundaried by the specific demands of working within a rock group. Departing Roxy Music subsequent to their second album, "For Your Pleasure", in 1972, a typically eclectic yet interconnected set of projects immediately followed.

Liner Note Author: Brian Eno. Considered by many to be the ultimate ambient album, MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS is so delicate, lovely, and aesthetically moving, that it has been known to give rise to sensations of flying, being enfolded in warm blankets, or watching a vision take place in the heavens. If this sounds like an overstatement, you haven't heard the album. A four part "piece" performed entirely on synthesizer and piano, Eno's composition finds a referent more in abstract painting (one visualizes bold blocks of color in warm hues) than in any musical genre.

It led me to my theory that cities are places built for women. PETER: Wow. BRIAN: In cities, you have the opportunity to do all the things that women are really specialized at: intense social relationships and interactions, attention to lots of simultaneous details. And of course in cities you can do very few of the things that men are good at. PETER: Like what? BRIAN: BRIAN: I do. One of the peaks of civilization in the west was the salon. They were nearly always the invention and ongoing project of women. BRIAN: PETER: Elias also gives the court credit for the invention of psychology. BRIAN: PETER: What have you been reading lately?
